Gluten sensitivity probably doesn’t exist
Celiac disease is real. But short of that, the burgeoning industry that caters to those who claim gluten sensitivity is probably based on a fantasy.
That sort of thing is always tricky, though. If people believe that gluten makes them ill, they probably will feel ill if they know they’ve eaten gluten. So I predict that those who make gluten-free products have nothing to fear.
This is not the first article with a provocative title on gluten from Pomeroy. And given each time he gets linked to – as with this one – it won’t be the last. After reading this one I see him as a type of Troll.

The Western world is unhinging itself, with postmodernism, multiculturalism, moral relativity, and people in their millions searching for diseases to have. It used to be ‘irritable bowel syndrome”, which is still around, but has been joined by fibromyalgia and gluten sensitivity, among others. I would add the various congeners of autism, and ADHD, to the list.
And the beat goes on. We have (allegedly) more better-educated people than ever before, but they seem inclined to take Dodo pills.
I’ve gone off gluten for a few months then gone back on again several times. I won’t go back to gluten. When I’m on gluten I get severe headaches that can last five days, severe rashes on the back of my wrists, sleep disorders and other issues. I am not celiac but I am gluten intolerant. I believe celiac to just be a more severe form of gluten intolerance. This is an area of health that very little research has been done, so please do not dismiss something unless you have firsthand knowledge.
I think those who are diagnosed with celiac must be thrilled to be able to shop in regular supermarkets. So I’m glad the food i available. I also agree with Stephie – just because we don’t have tests that are sensitive enough doesn’t mean it isn’t real.
But then again, like ADD there will always be people who believe they have it but don’t.
For the record, gluten doesn’t bother me one way or the other.

Very interesting article at the link. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity does not make sense for most of the planet, since most are descended from wheat-eaters way back. (Wheat was the first domesticated crop!) Had the issue had to do with the development of commercial wheat strains, it would have shown up in the early sixties, the last BIG change in commercially grown wheat.
Before people like Stephie, who I am sure definitely suffers physically, get on me for this, READ THE ARTICLE AT THE LINK. Because it makes a lot of sense. A lot of gluten-foods do contain FODMAPS, which is what they discovered that most of those studied did actually have a sensitivity to. Actually, reading what DOES contain FODMAPS seems like it makes it even MORE problematic to follow a FODMAP free diet! Oy!
However, there are some people who fall for the chic disease du jour. In my younger days, it was lactose intolerance. It is highly unlikely that people of Northern European backgrounds would be lactose intolerant. (That being said, there are a lot of Americans who may have Native American, Asian, African, or Mediterranean ancestors they may not know about–all groups who have a high degree of lactose intolerance.) But some people took drinking a lot of milk and feeling uncomfortable from the volume, as lactose intolerance.
Stephie’s story is interesting but is only a story unless & until she does a real blind test, where she tries a diet with & w/o gluten (and for FODMAPS too) & DOESN’T KNOW which is which. That is the only way to be scientifically sure what is causing her symptoms. Personally I wonder if some of the issues with gluten & lactose are part of the aging process. The women of my mother’s family seem to gradually lose their lactose tolerance after hitting menopause & I seem to be one of them. Of course I would need to run the same blind test to be sure that was the cause of my middle-age gaseous issues. Meanwhile, if it is only the placebo effect I’ll take it.

I think it is both fascinating and self-explanatory that the peudo-syndrome of gluten sensitivity features flatulence and diarrhea. These people are full of shit. They sit there and tell us “just because we don’t have tests that are sensitive enough doesn’t mean it isn’t real” like they understand gastroenterology. It is real; all mental disorders are real.

There are people who have a Google alert (or whatever it’s called) for their pet topics. And so they come to deal with the post that discusses their topic. And then they usually depart again.
This happens quite regularly with certain topics. I’ve noticed, for example, that any critique of lo-carb diets or even anything about weight loss diets will draw the Gary Taubes disciples like flies. Apparently much the same is true of gluten sensitivity critiques.
I just returned from Italy and am officially going back to my regular gluten inclusive diet. The only reason I tried the gluten-free approach is because I have chronic pain in my right thumb and I am right-handed. I’m pretty certain that almost all the issues I have are nerve-related, but I was at a holiday gathering and a person was observing the gluten-free diet and I asked how she could deny herself so many enjoyable foods (she is German-I’m of Italian heritage–think pasta!) and she said she used to be in pain and is “pain free”. Those words stuck with me so when 8 months later I was still in pain, I decided to try it. That was last September. It didn’t work. However this last plane trip I ended up with a swollen foot and before boarding the 2nd flight took some aspirin. I’ve been on aspirin ever since. And while I am not “pain free”, it is the most comfortable I’ve been in almost 2 years. Amazing, I tried every pain reliever including non-narcotic prescription ones with NO HELP. Then because of a fear of a blood clot while traveling end up on aspirin and relief. I’m back to enjoying gluten but the one advantage was keeping my weight down was no problem. As my friend said when I started, “who needs an appetite to eat a piece of bread with butter?” Ha!
