What a surprise! Not.
The surprise for me is how much Madonna is worth: about 500 million. I had no idea. I’ve never been a fan; always found her very harsh. But then again, I’m not a man.

I am (a man) and I find her loathsome. I believe most of her fans can be categorized as “sexual” feminists (Camille Paglia’s take, with approbation) or men (just barely) who never outgrew their comic books and find comfort with concert stage and video fantasies of the leather, metal, buckle and stud variety.
I am (a man) and find her a whore in all meanings of this word, and most disgusting in that.
I’m not a fan, although I do like some of her music.
In the 90s, with her sex photo book and some of her over the top work, I figured she was about to crash and burn, but she managed to survive. I’m impressed with her ability to reinvent herself, and her buisness savy. She appears to be a ruthless woman in charge of her career.
Here’s hoping she has to pay her ex- a fortune in spousal maintenance!

I am a man and I am not a fan either.
My estimation: she’s worth about as much as the contents of my handkerchief.

1. Madonna’s fan base is primarily female.
2. A significant number of her songs (Like A Prayer, Material Girl, etc.) are brilliant.

1. Maybe she appeals to other females as a strong, in-your-face sort of woman. That’s the harshness I’m talking about.
2. I wouldn’t call them brilliant. Some of her songs are good. There are lots of good singers and lots of good songwriters. That doesn’t account for her intense fame and her enormous fan base, which I admit I just don’t get.
But then (and I probably shouldn’t admit to this because I will make so many enemies), although I liked Elvis, I wasn’t a huge fan of his, either (although he had it all over Madonna, IMHO).
The Beatles, on the other hand—-now them, I could understand.
I always thought it was WOMEN who were her huge fan base. I’m a woman, I’m a sexual creature, deal with it – that sort of thing. Oddly, it was always the most – how do I say this? – Catholic? Proper? Reserved? women who seemed to like her the most. Maybe she’s a liberating figure for them, a sort of mirror twin. She’s what they want (or need) in some way to express but can’t. She’s that voice for them.
I liked the song (and video) Vouge(?) but I wouldnt call myself a fan of hers either.
No fan of the Material Girl, but Guy Ritchie made a few great movies before he married her: Snatch and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. All of the movies he has made since he hooked up with her have been shite (as they say across the pond), especially the one (Swept Away) that starred his wife. Coincidence? I think not. Maybe he’ll start making good movies again.
I’ve always been surprised that she’s so enormous too.
However, Madonna has has taken a leading role in popularizing the idea of extreme physical fitness and complete sexual liberation for women.
She wasn’t the first but she is a trendsetter.
She seems to have had a huge influence on younger performers like (Britney and Christina).
Some of her songs, like Beautiful Stranger and Like a Prayer are really good. I like Die Another Day a lot too. (She puts on tefillin in the very violent video.)
I also liked the documentary, Truth and Dare, but it does make her appear to be harsh, as you said.
Some of her big hits, however, (Like A Virgin, Papa Don’t Preach) are listenable but mediocre songs.
The only guys who like her tend to be gay men.
I am not a fan of hers, as my taste in singers runs towards Ella, Billie, and Sarah. However, if Madonna would be so kind as to share some of her George Washingtons with me, I would be open to changing my mind.
She’s a self-promoting lap dancer who made sure early that she wouldn’t have a pimp.
Not a bad at being a business person. She identified her target demographics early: soft prOn consumers, the tabloid industry, and pop culture addicts. She’s moved into the … mature prON market since turning fifty.
She saw a niche and made it her own. I stopped paying attention at all when she accessorized with a child.
There are standards to be observed, after all.
