That annoying video
I just noticed that when the main page on the blog opens, the video in this post starts playing automatically.
That’s the sort of thing that sets my teeth on edge. I don’t know how to fix it (any suggestions?), and don’t have time right now to try, but my apologies. Just click on the button in its lower left corner to make it shut up.
[ADDENDUM: Thanks for the suggestions. Changing the code didn’t work, though, so I think I’ll just do what “sdferr” suggested and put it below the fold.]
Bah! I was hoping there would be an answer. I run into this sometimes. I almost wonder if YouTube/Google doesn’t get hacked and someone thinks it cute to turn on all videos. Sometimes it’s only my blog, sometimes it’s all blogs, sometimes it is just other people’s blogs. I’m not doing anything on my end, so… unless I am hacked it is out there. I thought about digging into it, but you quickly find that Google and YouTube have one secretary, Ms. Wait, who handles all complaints. And they prompt you to go directly to Hellen, her first name, Hellen Wait with your complaints.
I’ve heard tell you can put those sorts of “auto-play” videos below “the” fold (well, “a” fold), and then they won’t go off when the homepage is accessed.
It’s in the embed code – sometimes you just change true to false…
Some have their own secret codes, like, to turn off autoplay in Breitbart embeds it’s Change wid=1 to wid=2 in the embed code. But the true false usually works.
It is horribly annoying. I agree. Oughtta be outlawed.
I don’t know about Windows PCs, but Macs have a mute button on the keyboard. Very handy.
I had 25 tabs open and was looking for the one talking. Then I hit your tab and read this post.
I was just telling my wife “I hate when websites autoplay the videos”
Then I found the video…..
I don’t know how to remove the autoplay but you could just link to the vid.
Neo: Does this 4 minute YouTube help?

Delete and replace it with a link to it.
Don’t think you can turn this one off. It’s embeded with iframe code. but you might try this.
At the end of the iframe code add …
autostart=”false”
See what happens.
carl in atlanta: jack is correct. The YouTube video you linked doesn’t apply to this particular video. They’ve cleverly embedded the autoplay instructions in a way that you can’t easily change.
Even jack’s suggestion didn’t work, so I decided to get the video off the main page. But thanks to everyone who made suggestions.
Just for clarity. What the iframe code does is simply embed “their” page as a frame into “your” page. That’s why you can’t change it.
If the vid is embeded with with “object” code i think the autostart=”false” would work.
youtube explains the autoplay option in the embed code:
autoplay (supported players: AS3, AS2, HTML5)
Values: 0 or 1. Default is 0. Sets whether or not the initial video will autoplay when the player loads.
so, just add “&autoplay=0″ to the end of your embed code and it shouldn’t autoplay (assuming this is one of the supported players).
i.e. change your code in the iframe to read
src=”http://shine.yahoo.com/video/shine-dating-advice-breaking-way-131704238.html?format=embed&autoplay=0”
and it shouldn’t autoplay. You should test this out and keep it in mind for the future.
I realize that youtube claims that the default for autoplay is 0 but it might be that the video provider has somehow overriden this on the site and you still need to put the ‘autoplay=0’ part in. Or … it might just not work with this player.
Err …. sorry. I don’t know why I assumed it was youtube, even after looking at the clearly non-youtube url. Call me silly. Sorry about the wasted comments – this included.
It’s not such a big deal when it happens on a blog, because as with your case I figure it’s not the fault of the blog owner. What really sets my teeth on edge is when it happens at the website of a private corporation… and I’m at work… in podworld. All you can do is quickly hit. mute and tell your co-workers you really didn’t mean for that to happen
