The Onion channels Ryan talking to Democrats

This is pretty funny, despite the obligatory Palin/Quayle-bashing, the kneejerk assumption that Ryan’s politics don’t really make sense, and the reference (not excerpted here) to Ryan’s being very white:

It’s okay to admit it. You’re frightened to death of me. It might actually be healthy for you to face your fears now rather than later, when Mitt and I are leading by a few points in the polls and it looks like this thing might end badly for you. Face it: I’m not some catastrophe waiting to happen, like a Sarah Palin or a Dan Quayle. On the contrary, you have the exact opposite fear. I’m a solid, competent, some might say exceptional, politician.

Did you get nervous when you read that last sentence? Is it because you know in your heart of hearts that it’s 100 percent true? Is it because, even if you strongly disagree with my beliefs on Medicare, Social Security, women’s rights, and marriage equality, you know my talent as a speaker and my well-thought-out approach to these issues””no matter how radical and convoluted you find them””might just be enough to win over independent voters?

Do you get chills just thinking about how strong my appeal actually is?

I have another question for you: How scared are you that I can convince people I’m right? Because I’m good at it. No, I’m really good at it. You see, I know how to turn up the charm and charisma without putting people off. Then I back up what I’m saying with arguments that, when they come out of my mouth, sound completely accurate and well-reasoned. And I do it with such passion that people automatically recognize me as a man with deep convictions he will stand up for, no matter what.

The American people love that shit. They love it.

I think that, if truth be known, this is much closer to what the Obama team really thinks of Paul Ryan than the opinions they trot out for public consumption. Boy, I’d like to be a fly on the wall…

[ADDENDUM: Politico certainly doesn’t agree. Not only does it not say that Democrats are afraid of Ryan’s candidacy, but it claims it’s really Republicans who are secretly terrified of him:

It would be instructive, to say the least, to learn who these frightened GOP operatives might be. David Brooks? Chris Buckley? Romney’s staff? McCain’s former aides? We’ll never know, because Politico isn’t saying.]

    You hinted at shenanigans. I agree. Politico – and Ben Smith was the prime example – is a hack operation which is on the other side. I flatly, absolutely, DO NOT BELIEVE that “the most common reactions” of typical Republican professionals were negative.

    And yet, the grain of truth is that the “Establishment” is worried. Good.

    Who is the Republican party. It’s one half full bore, religious tea party, one fourth libertarian, and one fourth of something else. The elites who have gone along step by step have more in common (self serving) with Obama than with citizens.

    Let them talk. The tea party has the votes, the momentum, the solutions and the will to restore America.

    Whenever you hear the phrase “Some say blah blah blah” know that is really, “We illiberals say blah blah blah.” Remember, words are the only things illiberals have for persuasion. They can’t run on results; they can’t lead by example; they have only words like “Some say” and “folks.” Take away the word “folks” from Obama (its a re-trigging the programming word) and Obama’s finished. Kaput. Take away one word from his vocabulary and Obama is finis. Shows how shallow and superficial their empire is.

    for how much? 100 million? 10 million?
    after you sell your car, do you care that the owner tricks it out? what if they take it to a junkyard? and how did the owner of such a company fail when they sold it, rather than ride it to failure and zero?

    Obama does better among white women and minority voters because they never bought into the self-made-man myth. After all, for them, no matter their work ethic or ability, longstanding societal barriers stood in the way of climbing the economic ladder. It took antidiscrimination and fair-pay laws to wrench open opportunities. Government was an essential player in making the marketplace fairer.

    I skimmed it quickly and noted immediately that the people who approve of Ryan were named, while all who complained were anonymous. Is that synonymous with fabricated?

    I sometimes wonder if there actually are people who read Politico, and similar publications, and take them seriously.

I’m pretty sure that Atlas Shrugged is a historically long- and well-selling book, and that sales have spiked in the past few years.

    Heaven forbid anybody walk away from reading her novels with any productive thoughts about the power of self-ownership and rugged individualism, or anything non-statist like that. Ew, gross.

    Her rant is nearly incoherent but she is making exactly your point that government, not hard work, is responsible for her success.

If there is any truth to this article – and that is doubtful based on Politico’s track record – then their sources were probably David Frum (as mentioned above), and McCain campaign consultants Nicole Wallace & Steve Schmidt, who both turned critical of Palin in exchange for opportunities within the MSM. These are the people who preach moderation (i.e., abandoning conservatism) as the way to win elections. Most likely that this is establishment Republicans being off-put by Ryan’s Tea Party appeal.

    Anyone who doesn’t know that the MSM is part of the Obama campaign hasn’t been paying attention.

    Spiritual is rather hard to define but perhaps it is easier to define by what it is not than what it is. It is not susceptibility, that is, complete ruin from one angle or another. It is integrity of the hull, of the frame, of the ship, the ability to take a hit and survive.

    Obama is not that. He cannot survive a direct hit. He has been shielded and protected and favored his whole life. He is waiting to be retired and doesn’t know it yet.

    Biden is the outrageous joke made to make Obama look serious.

    Romney and Ryan against Obama and Biden is a sure win if the voters have any reasonable fund of spiritual, mental and physical health.

    I think this is a good case study to make a point to clear up something between you and some non-neocons.

    When we say ‘go more conservative’ to win… it means more like Ryan. Not more extreme. A lot of conservative opinions are in the mainstream but these nameless republicans in the article do exist (they are not buddies of Dingy Harry)…. and they cause a lot of damage by pushing middle of the road solutions that accept democrat / leftist starting points. Middle of the road has no chance in bidding wars over how many goodies to give away.

    All implications, are, of course, metaphorical. I abhor the use of violence and cannot stand leftist (or any) threats. Thugish and union use of violence is deplorable. It is absolutely horrible. I only sanction violence for defense, but then after government declares war, each man must defend his country. It passes into duty.

    After such declaration, only the cowardly (or perhaps the real objector and we can allow such exceptions) refrains from self-defense. However, just to make clear, the tea party seek politcal solutions through elections and voting and convincing others of truth and freedom. We cannot rely on force and coercion. Such methods are for defense and not persuasion. Analogies of barbarians are useful because they are true, but, ironically, it is not the minorites whom illiberals actually defend. They defend themselves. They care less about you.

    More and more it is the elderly, the black, the woman who is being short changed. If that fact is escaping those groups, then, well, wow, I guess they demand words and not action. But they will wake up soon enough and join the “barbarians.” Let’s take over California!

    But I want to make clear, until war has been declared, I will take no violence, sanction no violence, and make no violence upon my precious United States of America and all its people.

    Christie won’t be talking about foreign policy or his judicial appointments. He will be talking about Republicans being able to attack deficits, and he will be able to do it with specifics. And he will do it as a blue stater.

    Think of it as the ninth inning and the bases are loaded. The guy we send in has to be able to hit the ball. I sure don’t see that as dissing a great pitcher. It’s just using the strengths you have at the right time and place.

  55. I listened to the Romney speech expat linked…. point 3 was interesting in that it called out China for “cheating”. This is an issue that will hit home with blue collar families and many of the long term unemployed. China does “cheat”. It cheats not only in terms of wages and deplorable working conditions; it also cheats by pollution standards that make Pittsburgh during the steel mill hay days look like a tree huggers paradise. Plus, expanding trade with Chile and the other up and coming SA economies is a sound policy.

    Anybody but Obama. RR victory in November.

  57. In public, they’re all smiles. But privately, these unnamed and totally-off-the-record old Republican “operatives” (love that word) are confiding their secret terror to the folks at Politico.

    I have it on exceptionally good authority that, when Romney announced Ryan, Obama immediately wet his pants. Michelle, on the other hand, cried out in fear and terror and ran and hid in a closet (it took them more than four hours to talk her out of it, and she still refuses to leave her bedroom), while Joe went through three pairs of Depends in the course of an hour. For the next three days after the announcement, the usage of Pepto-Bismol and Maalox by Democratic senators and congressmen reached record proportions, and many meetings held by leaders of the Democratic Party itself were constantly being interrupted by so many sudden bathroom breaks that they ran out of toilet paper.

    I was told this by reliable people through a number of private e-mails, so I can’t reveal my sources, but trust me when I say that these are all people high in the Democratic Party apparatus, most of them people who are widely known from regular press appearances…

    It’s all true! Yep. Every word!
