The Onion channels Ryan talking to Democrats
[Hat tip: Ace.]
This is pretty funny, despite the obligatory Palin/Quayle-bashing, the kneejerk assumption that Ryan’s politics don’t really make sense, and the reference (not excerpted here) to Ryan’s being very white:
It’s okay to admit it. You’re frightened to death of me. It might actually be healthy for you to face your fears now rather than later, when Mitt and I are leading by a few points in the polls and it looks like this thing might end badly for you. Face it: I’m not some catastrophe waiting to happen, like a Sarah Palin or a Dan Quayle. On the contrary, you have the exact opposite fear. I’m a solid, competent, some might say exceptional, politician.
Did you get nervous when you read that last sentence? Is it because you know in your heart of hearts that it’s 100 percent true? Is it because, even if you strongly disagree with my beliefs on Medicare, Social Security, women’s rights, and marriage equality, you know my talent as a speaker and my well-thought-out approach to these issues””no matter how radical and convoluted you find them””might just be enough to win over independent voters?
Do you get chills just thinking about how strong my appeal actually is?
I have another question for you: How scared are you that I can convince people I’m right? Because I’m good at it. No, I’m really good at it. You see, I know how to turn up the charm and charisma without putting people off. Then I back up what I’m saying with arguments that, when they come out of my mouth, sound completely accurate and well-reasoned. And I do it with such passion that people automatically recognize me as a man with deep convictions he will stand up for, no matter what.
The American people love that shit. They love it.
I think that, if truth be known, this is much closer to what the Obama team really thinks of Paul Ryan than the opinions they trot out for public consumption. Boy, I’d like to be a fly on the wall…
[ADDENDUM: Politico certainly doesn’t agree. Not only does it not say that Democrats are afraid of Ryan’s candidacy, but it claims it’s really Republicans who are secretly terrified of him:
Away from the cameras, and with all the usual assurances that people aren’t being quoted by name, there is an unmistakable consensus among Republican operatives in Washington: Romney has taken a risk with Ryan that has only a modest chance of going right ”” and a huge chance of going horribly wrong.
In more than three dozen interviews with Republican strategists and campaign operatives ”” old hands and rising next-generation conservatives alike ”” the most common reactions to Ryan ranged from gnawing apprehension to hair-on-fire anger that Romney has practically ceded the election.
Isn’t that astounding? In public, they’re all smiles. But privately, these unnamed and totally-off-the-record old Republican “operatives” (love that word) are confiding their secret terror to the folks at Politico. It would be instructive, to say the least, to learn who these frightened GOP operatives might be. David Brooks? Chris Buckley? Romney’s staff? McCain’s former aides? We’ll never know, because Politico isn’t saying.]
You hinted at shenanigans. I agree. Politico – and Ben Smith was the prime example – is a hack operation which is on the other side. I flatly, absolutely, DO NOT BELIEVE that “the most common reactions” of typical Republican professionals were negative.
Dinocrat points out http://www.dinocrat.com/archives/2012/08/14/an-obvious-point-but-one-worth-making/
that media, via being thrilled with negatives of the Ryan pick, are implicitly excited by the idea that the Ryan pick will make it easier for the media to support Obama’s re-election. Which, in turn, implies that media believe they have the power to make a difference for Obama at the polls. Which implies the media’s conception of their purpose: their purpose is NOT to report the news.
funnier are the people at the democratic underground who comment and dont know the onion for what it is.. (same at huffpo… dont know about huffpo tv)

too funny….
Does operative mean the assistant ad buyer for an unknown republican candidate in a blue state? There are plenty of TV pundits from both parties who seem pretty dumb to me, and notice that no one has drafted them to run for anything.
Happy to oblige. “They” were David Frum.
…ba-da-boom!
Politico. Of Herman Cain fame. Who gives a shit what they say? Except to note the opposite is true.
And yet, the grain of truth is that the “Establishment” is worried. Good.
Who is the Republican party. It’s one half full bore, religious tea party, one fourth libertarian, and one fourth of something else. The elites who have gone along step by step have more in common (self serving) with Obama than with citizens.
Let them talk. The tea party has the votes, the momentum, the solutions and the will to restore America.
Whenever you hear the phrase “Some say blah blah blah” know that is really, “We illiberals say blah blah blah.” Remember, words are the only things illiberals have for persuasion. They can’t run on results; they can’t lead by example; they have only words like “Some say” and “folks.” Take away the word “folks” from Obama (its a re-trigging the programming word) and Obama’s finished. Kaput. Take away one word from his vocabulary and Obama is finis. Shows how shallow and superficial their empire is.
Did you all see what Erskine Bowles thinks of Ryan? With recommendations like this, who care about a bunch of wannabe operatives.

The stories white guys tell themselves
http://www.tampabay.com/opinion/columns/the-stories-white-guys-tell-themselves/1245017
White men have been fed the myth of the rags-to-riches, self-made man, the quintessential American narrative that says hard work and perseverance will equate to success. The idea cemented in the male cerebral cortex is that people who start from nothing can work themselves from the Horatio Alger mailroom to the corner office.
its amazing in its audacity
a false assertion?
what does the Bold part MEAN?
William R. “Willie” Horton (born August 12, 1951) is an American convicted felon who, while serving a life sentence for murder, without the possibility of parole, was the beneficiary of a Massachusetts weekend furlough program. He did not return from his furlough, and ultimately he committed assault, armed robbery and rape.
have to love it when they are so ignorant that they cant even construct a false story correctly
Our striving Horatio Alger hero watches helplessly as his company is bought out…
for how much? 100 million? 10 million?
after you sell your car, do you care that the owner tricks it out? what if they take it to a junkyard? and how did the owner of such a company fail when they sold it, rather than ride it to failure and zero?
is that TRUE or is that the assumption?
we will never know, as they acted on the assumption, and never gave time for the evolution of such changes to society while preserving the past…
they gutted it.. now they try to fix all the problems they are causing with more of the same that caused them.
but note… the glass of people who are way way below replacement, who are being exterminated, and who are being paid off more than any other class in the history of mankind… are his biggest voting block.
if only stalin knew. eh?
The Politico article struck me as a parody of a Politico article.
I skimmed it quickly and noted immediately that the people who approve of Ryan were named, while all who complained were anonymous. Is that synonymous with fabricated?
I sometimes wonder if there actually are people who read Politico, and similar publications, and take them seriously.
now its getting hilariously funny in a parallel earth comix kind of way… (when will they realize that this is not the world of justice league, but social justice subjective league, with the view designed by R Crumb!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Chris… do you know where Ayn is from?
she got her education in similar ways to mine.
Family history and personal experience with a huge amount of reading and education thrown in
the Pinball machine has turned over, and the radicals are the man, and the man is the radical, and telling the truth, as orwell said, is the radical thing to do.
funny, but i think that the left is not realizing that in their haste to paint, they are resurrecting the RADICAL REPUBLICANS…
And by the way, that’s one of the weird things I notice about the conservative movement is. They believe that the way to get rich people to work harder is to give them more money. The way to get the poor people to work harder is to screw them a little bit. – Chris Matthews
and heaven forbid (sarcasm) that they decide to look up ryan by typing in radical republican… 🙂
the leftist worm Ouroboros is eating its own ass of ignorance in that they no longer generally know enough history to NOT step in their own doodoo…
Excellent, excellent point Art and it was illustrated by Melissa Harris Perry who stated “When you sit in a body like mine as an African-American woman, you know that God and nature have in fact made us – inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” she continued. “But we could not have them until there was a Civil War that allowed the federal government to impose those . . . ”
Her rant is nearly incoherent but she is making exactly your point that government, not hard work, is responsible for her success.
See Mark Levin’s reply:

The Onion piece accurately portrays the fear that lurks in the minds of Debbie Wasserman, Stephanie Cutter, Axelrod, and the other democrat shills. Ryan as VP has them reeling and lurching about and contradicting one another.

looks like if Obama is like his uncle in kenya, he is working with another country to do the same as his uncle did.
and with nuclear submarines hanging out for weeks outside out coast lines in California, the gulf, and east coast… what does that seem to be lining up for? don’t forget violations of air space too… and China now grabbing lands through slow movement…

If there is any truth to this article – and that is doubtful based on Politico’s track record – then their sources were probably David Frum (as mentioned above), and McCain campaign consultants Nicole Wallace & Steve Schmidt, who both turned critical of Palin in exchange for opportunities within the MSM. These are the people who preach moderation (i.e., abandoning conservatism) as the way to win elections. Most likely that this is establishment Republicans being off-put by Ryan’s Tea Party appeal.
Anyone who doesn’t know that the MSM is part of the Obama campaign hasn’t been paying attention.
In April 2010, Glenn Beck interviewed Paul Ryan.

they can beat the ignorant who does not see them for what they are…. but anyone that knows their true natures? oh oh..
(unless he is part of it posing opposing sides – not saying he is, just saying i can never tell)
Ryan is Anti-Progressive
Ok… as i said before, those INTERESTED in a subject read it… and read deeper and more than others… so obama being interested in communist revolution, and involved, know that history (which is why i said to read it, and know him like an open book)…
if you want to undersrtand whats going on, then you HAVE to read the history. everything else in commentary that does not look at that, is not understanding, but philsopy.
understanding, a la newton, comes from knowing… philosophers view of the world comes from making up stuff that seems right from the myopic perspective…
its the difference between armchair nothings taht feel they are doing sometning by saving time and making something up… rather than spending time and looking something up.
how many people here get Ryan reference to faber?
Marx held to an ontology of homo faber, not homo sapiens (Engels, 1845). Quinney (1965) elucidates this conception best as the idea of human nature being essentially unfinished and constantly realizing its potential. Explanations of crime based on socialization experiences, normative structures, and cultural demands are therefore incompatible with Marxism because humans are never completely socialized, claim higher loyalties than societal norms, and are culture-builders not culture-products. This ontology, like Rousseau’s conception of native goodness, is a rejection of both classical (free will) and positive (determinism) traditions. It’s also part of the deep structure of romantic thought in Western philosophy (Gouldner 1970).
but how can i talk of all that and more over 100 years if no one reads it but the man at the podium?
very nice to know that ryan knows what i know, but not so nice to know that the people who would support this change back to such foundational principals cares not for them enough to invest any time and know themselves.
oh. i know that many here are more well read, and should have the common sense to know that when i say the above, if it does not apply then its not them i am talking about. (funny, but i can talk of purple penguins, and the people here will not self sort themselves out if they are not purple penguins, feminists, etc)
here a university turns the story upside down
http://www.univ-annaba.org/attachments/119_Article4.pdf
he gives the progressive excuse, and does not point out that the military was there since the democrats and the KKK, and knights of the white camelia, were murdering blacks by the thousands. ergo the NAACP a progressive organization, starts their lynching stats AFTER that so they dont have to list 20,000 murdered by democrats.
but this is the point…
if you dont know the history, are you going to know whether you support a progressive posing as something, or something opposing progressives? would you know to oppose them? what about feminism? cant leave the cancer behind, can you? (refuse to get rid of ANY part, especially the oldest part and most powerful, is to have the dandelions grow back feircer each time)
Art-
Robyn Blumner is plenty qualified to speak on what elite left wing blowhards may think, which is exactly where she got her ideas for this article.
In Roosevelt’s day at the time of Progressivism’s birth, there were people who saw it for what it truely was:
I have often listened to well-meaning men who have spoken with a certain horror of Wisconsin, as if it were a community engaged in reckless experiment and in the effort to introduce impossible and revolutionary principles of law and governmental practice.
And
It is only in Wisconsin, so far as I know, that a really serious and thorough effort is being made to find out how to frame measures which shall give the people effective control over the big corporations without going into wild extravagance; and in this effort politician and student have joined hands.

That is one great pic atop the Onion story. Makes me say (pardon the pun): Read it and WEEP!
And yes, I can believe some Repub politicos, nabobs, and “operatives” are scared–they could lose their jobs and their places on the Dems contact lists. The term “sea-change” comes to mind. Those guys in sentence above are lost, and without a map, a compass, a GPS.
Oh, yes, the waves be high, the boat be low, and the boat be leaking. Bummer.
To cheer ourselves up, lets tell Paul Ryan stories:
Did you know that when Paul Ryan does pushups he is actually forcing the deficit down?
If Paul Ryan were to ever appear on television without his shirt thousands of women would spontaneously give birth to perfectly formed sons and daughters of Paul Ryan?
That Superman’s costume is actually made from remnants of Paul Ryan’s old pajamas?
You take it from here
Oh, heck – if you think the old-line establishment GOP operatives are privately wetting themselves, those kind, caring, intelligent and tuned-in folks at Open Salon are having epic commiption fits.

This is sad. Sadder still, because these people can vote. And also post their bigotry and idiocy on-line. (Yes, I had a blog at OS, until I couldn’t stand it any more. I keep the account open so I can go back and point and laugh. And on November 3rd, I shall go back and laugh and laugh and laugh…)
How do we know that those people the Hill and Politico are talking about are even actually Republicans?
artfldgr’s link to fob.gov is rather disconcerting and also a bit strange in that they want to purchase tens of thousands of rounds of 40 S&W but only 500 paper targets. Does this mean the federales are either already expert marksmen or else they’re too cheap to allow for much target practice? Or, perhaps NOAA is going to fire 40,000 rounds of 40 S&W into the air to combat global warming???

By the way, where is Foxmarks on this? Romney is going to repeal Obamacare. It’s one of his 5 major planks. If he reneges on it, it’s bigger than Bush’s “Read my Lips” failure.
Romney is patience.

Ryan is our conscience.

These are the brilliant ones that think being dem lite is the way to win… and loose….
It all has to be there for real and sustained success: spiritual, mental and physical.
Spiritual is rather hard to define but perhaps it is easier to define by what it is not than what it is. It is not susceptibility, that is, complete ruin from one angle or another. It is integrity of the hull, of the frame, of the ship, the ability to take a hit and survive.
Obama is not that. He cannot survive a direct hit. He has been shielded and protected and favored his whole life. He is waiting to be retired and doesn’t know it yet.
Biden is the outrageous joke made to make Obama look serious.
Romney and Ryan against Obama and Biden is a sure win if the voters have any reasonable fund of spiritual, mental and physical health.
PS / TO Neo:
I think this is a good case study to make a point to clear up something between you and some non-neocons.
When we say ‘go more conservative’ to win… it means more like Ryan. Not more extreme. A lot of conservative opinions are in the mainstream but these nameless republicans in the article do exist (they are not buddies of Dingy Harry)…. and they cause a lot of damage by pushing middle of the road solutions that accept democrat / leftist starting points. Middle of the road has no chance in bidding wars over how many goodies to give away.
Here’s something: Let’s take over California. It is ours for the taking.
I had to laught at the Politico article. They must have gone to a convention of “Concerned Conservatives”.
California is Rome circa 476. We, the tea party barbarians demand our fair share, that is, that government revenue be distributed equally and not politically. We demand government and union pensions that we are paying for be dropped to the level we enjoy. We have no intention of paying for the retirement of those who hate us at a level that is higher than us.
Will you organize and assemble and bring your paltry numbers in parades and demonstrations? We will find your houses and places of employment and rob them of your food and equipment. Then, we will demand you recognize our rights and needs and wants and hang you in the open market square. So speak the barbarians. We can’t wait to meet your occupier pussies.
Country-club, go-along-to-get-along RINOs and their Democrat pals should be frightened. Ryan is a serious, no-joke threat to their cozy way of doing business, and my hat is off to Romney for choosing him. This election should be interesting.
Be afraid Obama, be very afraid. And jump on the Barbarian wagon. Wahoooo.
http://thehill.com/video/campaign/243683-ryan-its-irrefutable-that-president-obama-is-damaging-medicare
You know, I wanted Ryan to run. But this is better. Because we will get Romney for Eight and Ryan for Eight.
Hunh.
Mayan revelation? Yes, and it’s a good thing!
Sorry doomsdayers. Peddle your wares elsewhere. We are going to survive. We can take the hit, we deserve the hit, but we want the hit to redeem our sins.
We reject Hollywood, number one, as our teacher and leader. We reject out of control, cultic influenced, contempt for us, actors and directors and ASSHOLES otherwise known as famous people. You should find a safer place to live than your contemptuous mansions because we’re not buying your products and we’re not worshipping your academy, grammy and otherwise worthless awards. Let those awards be melted down and sustain you in your horror. We will bring it because you deserve it.
The barbarian.
From Curtis:
Caveat emptor:
All implications, are, of course, metaphorical. I abhor the use of violence and cannot stand leftist (or any) threats. Thugish and union use of violence is deplorable. It is absolutely horrible. I only sanction violence for defense, but then after government declares war, each man must defend his country. It passes into duty.
After such declaration, only the cowardly (or perhaps the real objector and we can allow such exceptions) refrains from self-defense. However, just to make clear, the tea party seek politcal solutions through elections and voting and convincing others of truth and freedom. We cannot rely on force and coercion. Such methods are for defense and not persuasion. Analogies of barbarians are useful because they are true, but, ironically, it is not the minorites whom illiberals actually defend. They defend themselves. They care less about you.
More and more it is the elderly, the black, the woman who is being short changed. If that fact is escaping those groups, then, well, wow, I guess they demand words and not action. But they will wake up soon enough and join the “barbarians.” Let’s take over California!
But I want to make clear, until war has been declared, I will take no violence, sanction no violence, and make no violence upon my precious United States of America and all its people.
So let it be written. So let it be done. I may not be with you longer.
An America patriot.

I listened to the Romney speech expat linked…. point 3 was interesting in that it called out China for “cheating”. This is an issue that will hit home with blue collar families and many of the long term unemployed. China does “cheat”. It cheats not only in terms of wages and deplorable working conditions; it also cheats by pollution standards that make Pittsburgh during the steel mill hay days look like a tree huggers paradise. Plus, expanding trade with Chile and the other up and coming SA economies is a sound policy.

I have it on exceptionally good authority that, when Romney announced Ryan, Obama immediately wet his pants. Michelle, on the other hand, cried out in fear and terror and ran and hid in a closet (it took them more than four hours to talk her out of it, and she still refuses to leave her bedroom), while Joe went through three pairs of Depends in the course of an hour. For the next three days after the announcement, the usage of Pepto-Bismol and Maalox by Democratic senators and congressmen reached record proportions, and many meetings held by leaders of the Democratic Party itself were constantly being interrupted by so many sudden bathroom breaks that they ran out of toilet paper.
I was told this by reliable people through a number of private e-mails, so I can’t reveal my sources, but trust me when I say that these are all people high in the Democratic Party apparatus, most of them people who are widely known from regular press appearances…
