This guy’s got sense: on the Trayvon Martin case
You may notice that I haven’t written about the Trayvon Martin case yet. This is for the simple reason that I’ve been waiting for the facts to come out. At the beginning, the MSM was reporting only one side, and now the other is emerging.
But I/we still don’t know what the truth is. It could be a case of the racist, wanton killing of a young and innocent black man. Or it could be a tragic error. It could even be a case of reasonable self-defense. I don’t know. Do you?
But it seems to me that former NAACP leader C. L. Bryant is making a great deal of sense:
Former NAACP leader C.L. Bryant is accusing Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton of “exploiting” the Trayvon Martin tragedy to “racially divide this country.”
“His family should be outraged at the fact that they’re using this child as the bait to inflame racial passions,” Rev. C.L. Bryant said in a Monday interview with The Daily Caller.
The conservative black pastor who was once the chapter president of the Garland, Texas NAACP called Jackson and Sharpton “race hustlers” and said they are “acting as though they are buzzards circling the carcass of this young boy.”…
…Bryant…said people like Jackson and Sharpton are being misleading to suggest there is an epidemic of “white men killing black young men.”
“The epidemic is truly black on black crime,” Bryant said. “The greatest danger to the lives of young black men are young black men.”
Bryant said he wishes civil rights leaders were protesting those problems.
“Why not be angry about the wholesale murder that goes on in the streets of Newark and Chicago?” he asked. “Why isn’t somebody angry about that six-year-old girl who was killed on her steps last weekend in a cross fire when two gang members in Chicago start shooting at each other? Why is there no outrage about that?”
The answer is clear: because it doesn’t sell newspapers, and it doesn’t get the kind of publicity Sharpton et.al. are seeking.
The first thing which struck me:
the initial media narrative was focused on creating political momentum to change the “Stand Your Ground” law, yet the Stand Your Ground law was not applicable to this incident.
The second thing which struck me:
was not the way the race hustlers, such as Sharpton, grabbed for and fought for the spotlight (like women at the opening of a retail store sale). They were a preset given.
Rather the second thing was the credulity of left bloggers and “moderate” bloggers: they instantly bought into the media narratives and implications; they DID NOT say to themselves “Wait: what evidence to we truly have? vs what evidence is merely being implied?” Rather, when the incident narrative seemingly matched up with their hoped for and treasured narrative about racial hatred and racial assumption leading to violence and murder: left bloggers and moderate bloggers INSTANTLY jumped in WITH BOTH FEET and UP TO THEIR EYEBALLS.
I thought ~ after Rodney King showed that media narrative misrepresented police action (and that false media narrative drove eventual rioting), and after Duke Lacrosse proved to be a media driven hoax, and after Jena 6 proved to be a media driven hoax, and after the Tuscon murders and the media driven hoax to blame a particular Alaskan politician ~ I, therefore, made a silly assumption, that decent human beings who are also left side bloggers and “moderate” bloggers, would, in future, have learned some lessons from their own previous knee jerk and misguided public blog reactions, and from the subsequent regret which they ought have felt over same. I was wrong. Like Pavlov’s bloggers, those left bloggers and moderate bloggers, once again, instantly began to salivate, in public, on their blogs, and in comment sections. They are jokes. And their status, as public jokes, will not change even if Mr. Zimmerman is eventually shown to have been a very bad actor. I was a fool to underestimate the degree to which left side bloggers and “moderate” bloggers are jokes.
Lastly, there is an element to this which is unremarked upon (probably b/c it is one of the touchiest and most emotional subjects in all of American culture):
the left side narrative of this incident is partially driven by desire to distract attention away from the fact that the American population of young black males commit crimes at disproportionate rates. This means: even if Zimmerman turns out to have been a very bad actor, or a pretty bad actor, or an actor who acted in an unwise fashion — WHATEVER Zimmerman turns out to have been, it is nevertheless true that Zimmerman was correct to have assumed that Trevon Martin was part of a demographic (young black men wearing hoodies) who were more likely to commit burglaries than are other demographics. Zimmerman’s assumption does not excuse unwise or boorish behavior. Yet, it is simply true that Zimmerman’s assumption is based in truth about that demographic.
Here is the key thing: the left, and “moderates” DO NOT WANT to admit that truth; do not want to have public conversation about that truth, and about possible solutions. Rather, the left, and “moderates” want to shut up public commentary from anyone who might disagree with them about aspects of eventual solutions for resolving the problem. They want to shut up anyone and everyone who disagrees with their solutions. They are, at heart, totalitarians who desire to shut down all dissenting opinion. Their hysterical overreaction, to an incident which we do not yet fully understand, is partially driven by their instinct to prevent American conversation about the sad and tragic truth about the demographic re young black males and crime, and to prevent open and full American conversation about potential solutions to the problems which are faced by young black males.
I am not speaking of a formal conspiracy on the part of American left. It is an informal conspiracy: everyone on the left simply knows what to do. They react instinctively, and they do their part to obscure truth and to shut down dissent.
The physical evidence and eyewitness testimony supports Zimmerman’s recollection of the incident. To further sabotage their narrative, Zimmerman is as much “White”, as Obama is “Black.” Then there is the matter of their principal defense in manufacturing a character witness for Martin, which is failing to survive even a shallow scrutiny. Well, whatever the outcome, this is not a conflict between Black and White, and not even between Black and Hispanic.
Bryant, along with some surviving members of the Black Panthers (not NBPP), recognize the principal problem begins at home. Frankly, I am surprised to learn that the NAACP was ever a “civil rights” organization. In contemporary times, they seem to be little more than a business which exploits prejudice for profit.
As for Sharpton, they will permit anyone to act as a “civil rights” leader today. I’m surprised that American Jews have such a short or selective memory of his previous activism.
The whole episode has been a left wing conspiracy. The use of a three year old photo by the media is an attempt to make Martin look like a choir boy. Check out this more recent photo featuring a gold grill.

We know that after someone is shot in the chest they don’t do much damage so any injuries suffered by Zimmerman preceded the shooting. The police have confirmed Zimmerman had a broken and bloody nose, a swollen lip, and lacerations on the back of his head. He also had grass on the back of his shirt. A witness said Martin was on top of Zimmerman punching him. Zimmerman said his head was being slammed into the pavement which is supported by the grass stains and lacerations. The kid is reported to be 6’2″.
Martin was shot in the chest at close range. Zimmerman had a carry permit. Not only did Zimmerman fear bodily harm, he experienced it. The evidence is overwhelming. That’s why the cops did not arrest him.
How many black kids where shot in Chicago this month? Don’t they look like Obama? Where’s the outrage.
But if we actually wait for the truth to be disclosed and a reasoned, informed decision to be made, what will race whores like Jackson and Sharpton do for a living?
This is Leftist/Democrat driven. The object is to keep the black “community” hunkered down on the Democrat plantation. Thus Obama’s statement.
Leftists require enemies; they could not otherwise exist. So enemies must be manufactured for them. They have generated a nation-wide lynch mob overnight. These people are able, very able, I’ll say that.

It’s wise to hold comment until at least now. The whole case is quicksand, both sides have nasty elements to them:
-it’s questionable if Zimmerman had a community sanctioned right to carry a gun during his self selected duty as a community watch member
-the stand your ground law seems crafted to protect normal citizens (who are licensed to carry firearms) to use deadly force against an aggressor who brings a threat at that level of intensity, someone could argue that Zimmerman was conducting his affairs in a way to suspiciously maximize the potential circumscribed by the SRG law
-Martin probably did confront and initiate an attack on Zimmerman
-Zimmerman has a problematic past: a restraining order from a previous girl friend; Also from Wikipedia, “Zimmerman had a previous charge in 2005 of “resisting arrest with violence and battery on an officer” while interfering with the arrest of a friend. He subsequently entered a pretrial diversion program, which is not considered a conviction on his criminal record.”; three years later he was enrolled in the local community college with the goal of becoming a police officer.
-More Wikipedia: ‘Some residents of his gated townhouse community declared that Zimmerman was known for being strict and that he went door to door asking them to be on the lookout for “young black men who appear to be outsiders”, while others regarded him as normal, helpful and passionate about neighborhood security, having supposedly thwarted a previous burglary attempt. The community reportedly experienced numerous instances of burglary, theft, and one shooting during the previous year, with 402 calls made to the police.” According to the Miami Herald, Zimmerman had placed 46 of those calls since the beginning of 2011, “to report disturbances, break-ins, windows left open and other incidents; nine of those times, he saw someone or something suspicious”‘
From this, it is becoming clear that Zimmerman pushed the boundaries of the role of community assist to law enforcement. If it is true that Martin initiated an attack, that fact will undermine the purity of his victim status.
This is a matter for the Florida court to parse, and everyone should stand back and absorb the discovery and analysis before reaching conclusions.
Both actors traveled from vigilance to hyper-vigilance, with Martin lashing out against racial profiling and with Zimmerman overacting in his quasi-role as an agent of the law.
I wonder if the community or the local police knew he was carrying a weapon in his duties as community watch captain? Is this implied in the current interpretation of the Stand Your Ground Law as it applies to this case? Are the local police standing their ground? Are they sanctioning the use of armed civillians to augment their arena of work?

If one presumes that these bloggers are interested in the truth, their behavior makes no sense.
If, however, one shifts perspective and assumes that they’re merely looking for confirmation of pre-existing conclusions, then it makes perfect sense.
In fairness, everyone does this to varying extents. But those who can muster a scintilla of intellectual honesty at least try not to succumb to the temptation with such avidity.
I’m not passing judgment on this particular case, but I must say as it now stands, the MSM is rushing to judgment to push an agenda and our president is a shameless race baiter.

An important piece of evidence that the police have is the entry wound location, distance from the gun and bullet trajectory. If the kid was shot in the back, he was walking away. If he was shot in the side from very close range, he was on top of Zimmerman, and so forth.
The police have a problem if the evidence exonerates Zimmerman and they properly don’t charge him. Like the initial Rodney King trial, it could lead to violence.

Florida (and almost all other states- I think IL is sole exception) have concealed carry laws. All concealed carry permits are issued only after certified training in law and legal self-defense uses of a firearm. So the state of Florida knows ALL persons so licensed by FL.
Concealed carry has been accompanied by measurable decreases in violent crime in many venues. Bad guys do not know who might be carrying, and are thus presumably deterred and/or more cautious in selecting their prey.
So the local cops were not in position to allow/disallow/depend on Z. in any way while he patrolled.

I keep going back to Obama’s saying that Trayvon could have been his son. When I saw the first picture of the middle school kid, I can relate to what Obama said. I can easily see Trayvon as a kid playing with Bo in the back yard or helping grill brats for a picnic or decorating the Christmas tree and wrapping a present for his grandmother.
When I see the later picture, I see an equally immature young man with a chip on his shoulder and an in-your-face attitude who has marked his body with permanent symbols of rebellion. I see someone who has been locked into a very narrow world of cool and who has no prospects for future growth. I doubt that Obama can envision a son who looks like that.
The question our society must deal with is how the first picture morphed into the second. It’s not just racial; there are plenty of lower class whites who develop in the same way. Why have we turned over the mentoring of kids through the years of teen rebellion to the sleaziest, trashiest people in our society? Why have we allowed them to measure themselves by the price of their athlete-endorsed shoes and their tatoos? Why have we failed to transmit that happiness that comes from real, even if modest, accomplishment, whether that involves helping paint the living room or knowing how to comfort a crying sibling? As a society, we don’t acknowledge the little things that make up a good life. We are too focussed on stars and possessions and being cool ourselves. The Ivy-educated OWS people are just as much society’s failures as the hoodie-clad Trayvons. The problem is not race. The problem is who we choose as role models for the young. The problem is that too many of the older generations haven’t even asked that question.
What’s clear to me is that this entire circus is another Axelrod diversion. Very well orchestrated and well timed to stir up the uninterested black voters for November.
Sharpton and Jackson are just patsies happily doing his dirty work.

I saw a comment elsewhere that said that it’s not only an attempt by the Democrat Media Complex to “circle the wagons” with the black vote; it’s also an effort to recapture the “white guilt” voters who have been straying.
The facts of the case no longer matter. It has become purely political.
Nobody yet has wondered what might have happened to Zimmerman if he had not shot Trayvon.
Maybe he prevented his own murder.
Beating someone’s head against cement is one way to kill and it is apparently what Trayvon was doing to Zimmerman.
The post and in the comments which followed are some of the most rational discussion on this issue that I’ve seen thus far.
I think that both the statement by C.L. Bryant mentioned in Neo’s post, and other comments by Herman Cain and Deneen Borelli . hit the nail on the head.
This incident should have led to a reassertion that we are a nation of laws, and that this should be handled according to due process and the legal process. But it has now been turned into a circus by the likes of Sharpton, Jackson, et.al.
I think we also need to start moving away forcefully from the post-civil rights era assumption that anything involving an African-American or another minority immediately invokes issues of racism. Unfortunately, the race hustlers keep injecting themselves into things like this, and play upon the anger and outrage that result when a young man is shot. I think there needs to be an equally strong counter-reaction which rejects the race angle, and says forcefully: “we are a nation of laws regardless of race, and we will follow the proper due process and legal procedure here, and we will not be distracted from it by race hustlers on both sides.”
As for the facts of this case itself, I think there are so many complicated and contradictory facts that could support many different scenarios. See Mr. Frank’s prior comment at 4:07 and compare with Dennis’ comments at 4:45. This is precisely why the investigative and legal process must occur according to the law, and unmolested by the rabble rousers.

Here’s a question that I have been trying to find the answer to, so maybe, Neo, you (or many of your readers) might know:
I saw the video in which the father said (clearly it was Sharpton’s words coming from his mouth) that “Zimmerman went home to his warm bed while my son went to the city morgue with a John Doe toe tag.”
My understanding of the situation is that the reason for the John Doe toe tag is that the kid’s body was taken to the morgue because he carried no ID. The police didn’t figure out who he was until the next day.
Okay, so when his 17-year old son did not come home that night, what did dad do? Did he call his son’s cell phone? Did he check with his known friends? Did he call the police about his “missing” son? Wasn’t this unusual behaviour for a school kid to be out all night, especially one who was suspended? Or has this 17-year old been “out all night” before?
What exactly, if anything, did dad do about his missing son that night?

This “whitey bad” campaign is so poorly concieved that it shows signs of utter desperation in the media and race baiting industry.

I have no problem with concealed and carry, I’m wondering about the line that’s crossed when someone who is armed and purposely seeks out dangerous situations under color of law, especially when the color is as faintly painted as it is with a community watch program.
You carry a gun. Fine. Do you venture out into dangerous territory on purpose? I don’t think so. I think the law was made for the general public who are conducting normal business in the public realm.
Am I simply imagining such a line? The local officials seem to conclude along your argument, but are they on guard against vigilantism? Evidently not, since everyone is silent about the bounty on Z’s head.

That would be Bobby Rush, the only person to beat Barack Obama in an electoral contest- in this case a Democratic Party primary for US Congress.
I am certain that Congressman Rush is also very concerned about solving the murder of Betty Van Patter, who had been a bookkeeper for the Black Panthers in the Bay Area, even if it would appear that Black Panthers are the most likely suspects.
Undoubtedly, Congressman Rush is very concerned about the high murder rates in the Englewood neighborhood, most of which lies within the First Congressional District, which Mr. Rush represents.
Most of the Englewood [68]and West Englewood [67]neighborhoods lie within the First Congressional District, which Bobby Rush represents. The two neighborhoods have a combined population of about 65,000. In the last 12 months, the two neighborhoods have had 61 first and second degree homicides.
While murder overall in Chicago was steady or declining in 2011, murder jumped about 40% in 2011.
For those two neighborhoods combined, that would be a murder rate of over 90 per 100,000.
Nearly all of that was black-on-black.Compare that to the overall US rate of ~6 per 100,000.

This is one of a series of happenings that Obama & Co., the Left, and their wholly bought MSM are and will be seizing on and exploiting as diversions and to rev up Obama & Co.’s base; it’s a “threefer.”
First, all the time devoted to this controversy, and to Limbaugh’s “slut” remarks, ” and to a whole long list of other such puffed up, manufactured, diversionary “controversies”–in the past and to come–is time the MSM is able to not look at or report on, and people are not concentrating on, thinking about, and commenting on, the state of our country in general and on the major mistakes and disasters primarily attributable to Obama, his policies and actions/inactions–like our horrible economic situation and a stalled economy, the huge across the board decline in personal wealth and retirement savings over the last few years, the still declining housing markets, millions of foreclosures and millions more houses underwater, the massively expanded money supply and our declining dollar, our out of control spending (and no actual budget passed by the Congress in over 1,000 days), unprecedentedly gargantuan deficits, and likely un-payable debt, Iran and nuclear weapons, the massive, high unemployment rate–with the real, total unemployment rate likely double or more the official percentage, our supposedly very low inflation rate–which is shown to be a lie by every visit to the grocery or other stores, high gas prices and the EPA using environmental regulations to shut down Coal fired electrical generating plants, the apparently total unworkability, fraudulence, and failure of Obama & Co.’s green energy projects and the resultant loss of billions of dollars of taxpayer’s money to environmental fantasy and crony capitalism, Obamacare, Obama’s disastrous foreign policy in Afghanistan, vis-é -vis Russia, and in many other instances, etc. etc.
Secondly, pushing White and Black America even further apart, widening and deepening the chasm of division and suspicions even further, inflaming this situation and stirring up conflict is pure Alinskyite agitation and incitement, and revs up Obama & Co.’s base; convinces his “Liberal” white supporters that they have to stick with Obama & Co. to fight back against the eeevil, racist, violent and immoral, gun-crazy Republicans, and solidifies his support among the black community, too, makes black supporters even more convinced that they are oppressed, under attack, dissed, discriminated against, and persecuted by Whites, Republicans, and our legal system, and that they need Obama and Democrats in Congress to defend their interests (and to keep the free stuff coming).
Finally–if need be–this helps create a rising climate of tension and incipient violence–started off slowly by Obama & Co. and various Presidential statements and actions, and via ACORN/SEIU, given a little more energy and starting to simmer by the New Black Panthers (and the Holder’s DOJ’s refusal to prosecute them), Administration refusal to police our Southern borders and the escalating violence seeping across it, Fast and Furious, the increasing number of successful and attempted terrorist attacks and “honor killings” by Muslims, and the violent Occupy movement–now adding a further violent element with it new tactic of encouraging squatting. The pot, now with this incident, likely heading towards a slow boil, and perhaps getting ready to be shifted to the big front burner to be brought to a full boil, if it looks like Obama & Co. are going to be kicked out of the White House, and “civil unrest” justifying some sort of power grab, and perhaps the postponing elections, might be needed to keep them there.
The redistricting in IL means that Rush’s new district will include some nicer suburbs. The rate should go down.

If Tray is Obama’s son, he would have been in private school and had bodyguards. Since Tray is a black slave of Democrats, Tray was in public school and got shot. That’s how it is with Obama’s privileged classes.
