jD Vance speaking at the American Dynamism summit today:
“he history of American innovation is we tend to make people more productive and we increase their wages in the process.”
I’d note also that they higher wages *drive* higher productivity..there are productivity investments that make sense when you’re paying $20/hour that don’t make sense when you’re paying $7/hour.
Katherine Boyle of Andreessen-Horowitz, which sponsored the summit, says: “The Great American Manufacturing Comeback is here”
Benjamin Britten, Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings op. 31, (Peter Pears — tenor, Dennis Brain — horn, BBC Symphony Orchestra — John Hollingsworth conductor): https://youtu.be/PQ0ITqRBaE0
David Foster, an excellent article here, by Salena Zito, about a manufacturing business running successfully in the old Westinghouse facility in western PA:
Dr. Vinay Prasad dives into a recent JAMA study (completely worthless) on seed oil vs butter (who knew olive oil was a seed oil?); how DEI grants get canceled and how Trump should deal with universities.
He mostly talks about the government medical establishment and medical research. Entertaining and informative. Language alert needed.
Kate….thanks. George Westinghouse would be pleased, I think.
Kate,
Small world. I spent several years at 2 different startups on that old, Westinghouse campus. The city Fetterman was mayor of is very near, as is a Primamti bros. satellite location.
Really cool campus. Still lots of old, Westinghouse stuff around.
Tone deaf Democrats just keep digging.
Here’s about as anti-entrepreneural and anti-Capitalist speech as you could possibly want, just handed to Trump on a silver platter.
Fresh off his very unwelcome on the Left vote on the CR, little Chucky Schumer went on the View to shore up his leftist street cred, as he made a little speech—spastic arm gestures included—about how people who create businesses and make profits from them should not have the unfettered freedom to direct their businesses, or to access all of their profits but, instead, that the government needs to step in and to regulate/direct their businesses, and to siphon off/take a lot of their profits in the form of taxes (Schumer’s full speech embedded in an X posting towards the end of the article ).*
If the GOP doesn’t make this whole speech into a mid-term campaign ad—and play it over and over again, from now until the election–they’re crazy.
The Obama Judiciary seems to believe it’s directing a remake of “Night of the Living Dead”….so that the corrupt ghouls can retake control of the country.
I don’t know who is saying olive oil is a “seed oil” or why; the oil is from the fruit. Pomace oil, which is made from what’s left over after olive oil is extracted, might possibly be fairly called a “seed oil”, but you can’t sell pomace oil as “olive oil”.
Just watched the return of the astronauts. So cool.
Niketas, the JAMA study put olive oil in with the seed oils. That’s one of the problems with the study. They also didn’t quantify how much butter was being consumed.
This is really an aside for the Dr. He spends most of his time talking about the government health agencies and medical research.
@Brian E:Niketas, the JAMA study put olive oil in with the seed oils.
That’s the piece I was missing, thanks. I don’t know enough to know if that invalidates their study somehow, I’d need to read the paper itself, been burned by too many takes.
All seed oils are vegetable oils but not all vegetable oils are seed oils. Olive oil, palm oil, and avocado oil are the non-seed vegetable oils I’ve heard of. I’m not sure if coconut oil is a seed oil or not; seems like it would have to be.
Nick:
According to the Intertube
“The quick answer is no, coconut oil is not a seed oil, and it’s not technically a vegetable oil either. Coconut oil is pressed from the white “meat” of a coconut, and does not involve extracting any oil in seeds. Coconut is also not a vegetable, but a fruit.”
Tomatoes are fruits that have seeds. Where are the seeds in the coconut fruit? It is a fibrous one seed drupe.
The answer to “Where is the seed in a coconut?” is a pdf on the Intertube.
So to me, claiming that coconut oil isn’t a seed oil is specious, even though it comes from a seed,
(ask the NYT). “A coconut is not a true nut, such as the acorn, ….”
On a smartphone, it’s not easy to link stuff, so the rest is up to you. Were there coconuts on Treasure Island?

I think he does this weekly (semi-monthly?).
Seed oil vs butter; DEI grants get canned; Universities versus Trump
