Have you experienced slowdowns and outages on the blog?
Every now and then lately, this blog has been slowing down or even going down, fortunately only for short periods of time. I’ve talked with the host and they don’t really know what’s happening, except that they say it seems to coincide with some bot attacks. And yet bot attacks have happened regularly for ages and haven’t caused slowdowns and outages, so I tend to doubt they’re the reason.
If it continues for long, I will have to consider another host. I really don’t want to do that, not only because it’s an annoyance but also because no host is perfect and it wouldn’t necessarily solve the problem. But please bear with me and let me know what you’ve been experiencing.
I have experienced slowdowns. No outages — that I can remember.
Nope. No issues from Denver.
Yes, I noticed yesterday that your blog was unreachable for an hour or so in the morning: Eastern time.
Every once in a blue moon, for me, the blog is briefly down. I’ve never experienced a slow-down.
I don’t know anything about your host, but I’d never ask for a change unless you’re absolutely sure that your new host would be much better.
Changing hosts requires time and trouble. I’d rather see you spend that on writing daily thoughts.
That’s one reader’s selfish perspective, but it’s your blog, so please do what you want.
Thanks for asking. Carry on, enjoy all four seasons, except for wildfire and mud.
Mostly slowdowns after I hit “Post Comment.”
A few outages, lately.
Slowdowns and some outages (last for maybe an hour or so).
Seems to have started with the comment section first, i.e., weirdness at times but mostly involving comment being sllooooww to post at times.
Am on the 4-year Hostinger plan – great price & service but no real support. Had an issue once and they suggested Fiverr…no one ever responded back from Fiverr, probably since it was minor, and AI resolved the issue for me.
Mostly your site does fine…maybe ask AI on the issues you’re having.
Yeah, I changed from WordPress to Hostinger—after free testing at about 3 hosts. Pain, but eventually worth it…
Yes, similar to what John Bennett above said.
Yes, I’ve had slowdowns and an occasional outage. I just try again later.
You might want to consider a free Content Delivery Network (CDN), instead of rehosting. A CDN caches data on its servers buffering momentary compute issues and even network related issues. The downside is that is another layer of configuration. Cloudflare is an example of such a service.
Your website has always been accessible for me. Occasionally, it will not accept a comment. I can usually solve that–at the advice of another commenter–by getting out of VPN.
When I tap on “replies” I get a 4-5 second hesitation. Otherwise never a problem. I visit 2-3 times a day.
Yes, but also experiencing the same thing with a few other sites. I’ve noticed this before when there is a large weather system between us and the northern US
I haven’t noticed anything different recently, but in general pages load slowly. I don’t know if that’s because of the host, or how the pages are organized. I’ve thought that maybe going to any link (to a different post or to comments on a post) involves loading many megabytes of data. But it could just be an issue with the host’s servers.
For whatever it’s worth, I have not had any difficulty. It has to be said that everything in the computer world, from email to browsers to social media, seems slower and heavier, more dragging and uncooperative and resentful, than it used to be. But that may well be my fault, for failing to follow good computer hygiene, reboot every so often, close down all the dozens of tabs I tend to keep open because I might need them — well, you know. But none of that is specific to this site. It opens, I can read, I can post. I use Firefox, if that matters, and shift to Chrome when (as happens more and more often lately) Firefox becomes uncooperative.
(At first, my eyes read the post title as “showdowns and outrages”.)
The only thing I’ve experienced was getting that 500 error the other day for a little while.
I’ve never had any problems here. I just noticed you use the same WP theme I selected for the new site. I also use InMotion hosting but not the basic plan. I’m not sure they’re the best, I’m not sure they’re not. They’re usually ranked among the top 5 or so but I’ve found “reviews” are pretty much worthless. Properly comparing different hosting services can be time-consuming and expensive. I think it’s pretty much “you get what you pay for”.
I just had a problem with getting in, but this has been happening with a number of my sites, particularly Chase Bank. I think the problem is system wide and not related to any particular site.
Yes, I’ve had a few occasions where this site does not update. Or comments won’t post. But it’s not that often, and usually waiting an hour, give or take, is sufficient. I wouldn’t worry too much, unless it gets much worse.
Am I the only one who read the title of this post in a TV lawyer voice followed by “You may be entitled to compensation.”? 😉
While a little annoying, the slowdowns and outages are occasional enough that I wouldn’t recommend rehosting yet. That sounds like a lot of work, and it might not even pay off. I’d hate for the blog to turn from fun and interesting for you into a chore.
And as for compensation, the blog contents are far more valuable than anything I’ve ever gotten from a class-action lawsuit. 🙂
I’m somewhere between Phillp Sells and DT
I got an internal server error for awhile earlier this week but was able to access your site later that same day. It generally works fine, issues are sporadic but no more frequent than any other site I visit. I think most are either from my ISP or general internet gremlins, not specifically your hosting service.
I’ve noticed slower load/re-load for the last month or so…I assumed it was enhanced security.
A brief outage as noted above by John Bennett.
I noticed my phone connected normally when my desktop couldn’t due to the internal server errors others reported.
I have no problems with your blog, but I have on 2 other conservative blogs that crash after only about 2 minutes. Strange thing is it happens only on my tablet, not my mobile. Tablet is easier to read, but can’t read those 2 blogs on it.
My experience mirrors Kate’s: “I’ve had slowdowns and an occasional outage. I just try again later.”
I also almost always come here after 9pm to review the prior day’s comments and then read the current day’s content.
@ R2L > “I also almost always come here after 9pm to review the prior day’s comments and then read the current day’s content.”
A reader after my own habits!
So far I have not experienced any problems.
Yes, both slowdowns and outages, but only occasionally… and you are not the only one. I don’t know whether this is ominous or just incidental.
I’m on MSN and sometimes it can’t find your blog and times out. Are you sure you haven’t been banned?
It was slow this morning, and in the recent past. Located in north, central NC (the Wilderness)
Still balky after all these days (Thursday 12:30 pm EST, 9:30 am PST).
And by the way, that “balky” response took many, many minutes to (finally) appear.
. . . as did my response to the response, though not nearly as extreme.
(Don’t worry, folks/neo, I am not going to perpetuate this indefinitely.)
Actually, it turns out that this (current) comment appeared on the blog right away!
M J R,
Yeah I got the server error at about the same time (9:30 AM PST) this morning.
No problems here in Berserkeley using Sonic Internet
