Update on Gerard’s book — 8 Comments

  1. Thank you Neo for finishing the work of one of my favorite blog writers. This is extra special because I had no idea you were such fine friends and I will order one as soon as they are available.

  2. Thank you, Neo. I miss Gerard.

The other day, I was thinking about that time when he told us all he lost everything in the Paradise Fire. He wrote about this very simple wish for a Scofield Bible. When I read that, something told me I must do this, since I’ve had a Scofield Bible since I was a teenager. So, I emailed him to let him know I would take care of that.

I might have told him I was probably one of his youngest readers, with one child in elementary school and one in middle school at that time. I told them what had happened to him and his kitty girl. We are cat lovers.

My two girls helped me gather the many items and pack it all. The Scofield Bible had a nice touch: it was personalized on the cover. Kitty received lots of attention and catnip. He received quite a few things, including a wooden sign that said, “You’re not the boss of me, my cat is.” My younger one wrote a list of all the items and sent him a simple note, in her own handwriting.

Two weeks later, he published something about that package. He quoted, verbatim, what my daughter had written in that note. He became emotional. I smiled from ear to ear. I told the girls he loved what we had sent him.

Recently, I had a conversation with that same daughter of mine, who is now 15 and in high school. We reminisced about “the man who lost everything in a fire” and who had a kitty like ours. Then, I told her what had happened to him. “That’s very sad, Mom,” she said. She has a sensitive heart and a very helping one. She’s been attending a Salvation Army church and is part of their music group.

Thought you might want to know.

P.S. If you think his book might need a Spanish translation, may I suggest we chat?…

  3. I’m waiting here for publication date with credit card nearby! This book will be a Christmas present for my son, plus one for me. We both miss him terribly and so appreciate your work on this project to see Gerard’s writing live on. Thanks for taking it on. @duchess…..lovely post….I remember that!
