The Gates of Vienna are open: Muslim schoolchildren in Vienna
[NOTE: Hat tip, commenter “Snow on Pine.”]
The Gate of Vienna are wide open:
More than one-third of primary school children in Vienna are Muslims, representing the largest religious group among elementary schools in the Austrian capital.
According to figures published by the Education Directorate and cited by the Exxpress news site, 35 percent of primary school students are Muslims, while 21 percent are Catholic, 13 percent are Orthodox, and 2 percent are either Protestant or belong to another denomination.
Just over one in four pupils (26 percent) are classified as non-religious.
The figures show a considerable increase in the number of Muslim children frequenting Austrian primary schools compared to data published for the 2016/2017 academic year when Catholics remained the largest religious group at 31 percent compared to 28 percent of Muslims.
By my calculations, there are a couple of missing percentages. But the general trend is pretty clear, if the figures are basically correct.
Christianity has been experiencing a falling-off in many Western European countries, at the same time that Muslim immigration has been increasing. There is also a differential birthrate:
According to the Federal Agency for Migration and Refugees, between 2014 and 2021 over 2.3 mln alleged “refugees” came to Germany (first and following asylum applications). Around 86 percent of them were of Muslim faith, i.e., 2 mln, which is around 2.5 percent of Germany’s population in 2014. From all the applicants only 6.3 percent were actually deported, i.e., only 147 thousand.
During the same period over 263 thousand alleged “refugees” came to Austria, of which only 11.8 percent (31 thousand) were deported. Given that 72 percent of the asylum seekers were of Muslim faith, this results in a gross influx of 190 thousand Muslims, which corresponds to 2.2 percent of Austria’s population in 2014.
Research by Stonawski et al. (2015) shows that Muslim immigrants have more children on average than their native counterparts: in Germany and Austria the fertility rate for ethnic Germans was 1.4, while it was 2.4 for Muslims. In 2022 the total fertility rate of both nations was 1.5 and 1.44 respectively.
So immigration in these countries is predominantly Muslim, most of the people who come are not deported, and their birthrates are over the replacement rate whereas the birthrates of the native populations are significantly under replacement rate.
The concern isn’t racist, it is cultural. The immigrants tend to bring their culture with them, and it includes anti-Semitism, homophobia, and the like – including, for a not-small percentage, the desire for sharia law in their new home countries.
NOTE: It’s not always easy to get statistics on this, either. For example, Belgium has a law against religious censuses. So estimates are all they’ve got.
They are doomed, It’s going to be a race tossed which European country goes first.
I was watching “Clarkson’s Farm” and the young farmer helping out had no Idea who Moses was and had never read the Bible. He’s twenty-one years old and has pretty much never left Chipping Norton his entire life. I found that really bad. Problematic. Sad. Scary.
Agree with skip. Western Europe is contentedly committing cultural and religious suicide. But Merkel’s incentive to import Euro-haters was because Germans regard sex only as a pleasure, not for conceiving babies.
Note however the Euro Muslims birth rate, as reported by Neo, is also now way below replacement; they have been Europeanized!
Cicero:
It said the current rate for Europe’s Muslims is 2.4. To the best of my knowledge, that’s above replacement rate, although below traditional rates in Muslim countries.
Up until not that long ago, when one spoke of refugees, it was understood to mean people who were probably not that different from you, e.g. European peoples fleeing European wars, and it was understood that when the conflict was over and it was safe to return home that people would.
Nowadays the whole concept of what is a refugee has been turned upside down and inside out. Most are not refugees in the common sense, but are opportunists who see a chance to take advantage of generous and gullible people, and in many cases have organizations paying them to do so. And they are not taking refuge in the first safe country they enter, they are headed almost exclusively for the welfare states of the western liberal democracies, often traveling thousands of miles.
Once here, we are told that wanting these people to go home is “racist” and a violation of their human rights, not to mention international law. The West had better develop a spine and some testicular fortitude, or The Camp of the Saints will no longer be a provocative, mostly forgotten novel but a reality show.
I wish you and other critics of the left would cease using *their* words like “homophobia”. Besides, I really don’t think Muslims have a fear of homosexuals; it’s contempt and hatred.
That word also lumps together those who would murder homosexuals with those who might make fun of them or otherwise not voice enthusiastic approval.
I often write, Camp of the Saints missed its best mark, Islam
Marisa:
What makes you think contempt and hatred don’t co-exist with fear or actually be driven by fear? I think fear is actually a large driver of Muslim hatred of homosexuals.
What’s more, in this case, the word is a way to point out to the leftists who promote open borders that the Muslim population has cultural practices and opinions that the left professes to abhor.
Antisemitism, transphobia, Christophobia, but, notably, not albinophobia as celebrated in gay parades, on the Whitehouse, etc. without pride on the plain mainly in Africa. Also, not transhumane as a Choice in diverse progressive sects with nominally secular religions and wicked solutions.
Might be a good idea to take a moment to reflect on our own lives: have we had children at replacement level ourselves, and if not why not? The same reasons likely apply in Europe.
There’s a small percentage who medically can’t, and there’s a small percentage of people who behaviorally should not. As for the rest of us, it’s going come down to not having made it the highest priority, for whatever reason, and there it is. Shouldn’t expect Europeans to be better than we are. America’s only ever above replacement level because, like Europe, we’ve been importing people who have more children, and like Europe they are mostly from cultures foreign to us (and more often lately don’t even speak the official languages of the countries they came from).
“Hijrah” – Migratory Jihad.
“One day, millions of men will leave the Southern Hemisphere to go to the Northern Hemisphere. And they will not go there as friends. Because they will go there to conquer it. And they will conquer it with their sons. The wombs of our women will give us victory.” Algerian President Houari Boumédiène, 1974 speech to the United Nations
“have we had children at replacement level ourselves, and if not why not?” Niketas Choniates
I always liked the idea of having three children, it just seemed right to me. After our daughter was born, my wife informed me, “never again”. Since she had to do all the work, it seemed only right that she had the final say in that decision.
Anyone familiar with the last thousand years or so of European history knows how fierce and prone to war the Europeans were.
Europe’s current pacifistic tendencies are a reaction to that. (As well as the globalist thumbs on the scale.)
Nonetheless, there is a quaint statistical phenom called “regression to the mean,” which basically means returning to the usual way things were.
For instance, have Scandinavians entirely forgotten their Viking heritage?
In 1961 the French National Police murdered 200-300 Algerians in Paris with beatings or by throwing them into the Seine.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_massacre_of_1961
I’m not recommending violence, but it is part of human nature and Europe may be overdue.
@Geoffery Britain: Since she had to do all the work, it seemed only right that she had the final say in that decision.
I imagine a conversation like that doesn’t go the same way in a Muslim immigrant household, and here we are.
My concern is not racist, but there is most definitely a racial component to it. I say this without apology.
I’m reminded of the scene in “Red Dawn” in which Matt says to Jed, “Tell me what’s the difference between us and them?”
Jed’s response: “Because we LIVE here!”
The Progressive would simply say, “so?” to this information. “Is there something wrong with that?” “This post is a dog whistle to racists and bigots.”
oops
those numbers are from 2017, the 2022 numbers show largest numbers from Turkey, (revenge of the Sultan) Syria and Afghanistan, it is said there are a fair number of chechens who found their home there, but they don’t dissagregate the data,
I know this is off topic; but for some time I have seen an Israeli flag flying alongside the American flag on a house a few blocks from home.
That motivated me to also fly an Israeli flag with my American flag.
Today, after watching for some time, I saw the man who lives in the house, and stopped to commend him for taking a stand. I asked if he were Jewish, and he said no he was a Christian; but thanked me profusely for acknowledging his effort. I told him I was also a Christian who believed that Israel had the right to defend itself; and that I felt like people needed to take a stand on their behalf.
I have seen one other in the vicinity. I have not seen the occupants, do not know them, and am reluctant to knock on their door. Although I may do so yet.
Sad to say, in a conversation with another acquaintance, he said that he was reluctant to take a public stand, but called a Jewish friend privately to express support. So, as is the current fashion, he virtue signaled and felt better about himself. A commentary of sorts.
Re: the term “homophobia”. Like most leftist favored terms (sexist, racist….), it may have a definition, but for the left the definition is irrelevant. It is a blunt instrument to imply a mental disorder for someone having thoughts they don’t want to examine or debate.
Gee, wonder why the country called the jihad center of Europe would not want religious censuses.
I spent several weeks in Vienna in 2022 and walked all over the central city (radius of about 2 miles from city center). The Muslim population was not much in evidence. Perhaps, they live in the suburbs, which are the poor areas in non-US countries. I’ve also heard Vienna called the city of pensioners, so the child bearing population in the city my be lower than in the general country population. It was also pride month; all the trams flew the pride flag.
jvermeer:
But I bet the pastry is still good.
Not too long ago Mrs. Otter shot a TV commercial in Austria with Lindsey Vaughn. She spent a couple days in Vienna “boulevardiering”, sitting at outdoor cafes sipping coffee and eating pastries. She said the pastries, and the deserts, were beyond outstanding. Concerning the deserts, she learned to order them “mit Schlag,” i.e. “with [whipped] cream.” It has since become a joke between us that everything we order at a restaurant must be “mit Schlag.” As in, “I’ll have the steak tartar mit schlag,” or “are the asparagus tips served mit Schlag?” And so on. We find this endlessly amusing. For some reason no one else does, but so what. Mrs. Otter maintains that Viennese Schlag is sinfully rich and delicious.
Oldflyer, thanks for the prominent support of Israel! I’m touched.
I look around the world and see so much hatred of Israel and Jews from people who fancy themselves loving and inclusive. It’s like a mind virus.
I pray a lot.
And Huxley, OT – big kudos to you for consciously being a positive influence on your niece. She is lucky to have an uncle who loves her enough to do that.
huxley wrote: “For instance, have Scandinavians entirely forgotten their Viking heritage?”
Yes. They were rather famous for giving up the Viking lifestyle as soon as they could get hold of some land that didn’t have a 45 degree slope to it. The ones who settled in the Humber area (iirc) of England forgot how to build longships within a generation.
The Normans (northmen) were Vikings offered land if they would only keep the rest of the Vikings from raiding deep into France. They settled right in and took to farming.
Christianity helped also. It was considered bad form to raid monastaries and to take and sell slaves after conversion.
Who knows? The Poles might yet ride to the rescue…
(Though I suspect they’ll have to first change their current government…)

Second Ilana for lauding OF [and neighbor] on his courageous support.
Not sure, though, that one should too harshly judge those who decide not to stick their heads out too far. Every measure of support is welcome…as so much of the world around us is cratering into crazed and increasingly violent, media-driven [un]reality…
This is probably they created a frame for the last freedom party leader well after haider some supposed russian connection
Culture. It’s almost always culture.
Oldflyer
I have supported Israel since 1978. I’m not a flag flyer but will engage in conversation. I am from NJ and have no filter. If someone wants to disagree so be it. If they want to go further so be it. I don’t seek out confrontation. That doesn’t accomplish much. But if someone engaged me I’ll go there.
This is why they had to depose the previous regime
What surprised me, though, is that Haider went down seemingly without a fight….
European political culture, on the other hand: Resign first. Then try to figure out what the truth is….
(Kinda like the Democrats expecting that Jeff Sessions would recuse himself—for half-baked “reasons”—and lo and behold that’s exactly what he did(!)…)
The invasion will not stop by voluntary agreement.
Stop pretending.
What invasion?
They’re being invited to come!
‘European Court Fines Hungary €200M Over Asylum Policy;
‘The ECJ’s decision to punish Hungary for defending the EU’s external borders is “outrageous and unacceptable,” says PM Viktor Orbán.’
https://europeanconservative.com/articles/news/european-court-fines-hungary-e200m-over-asylum-policy/
Strangely, Orbán doesn’t seem to understand that the EU does NOT want to defend its borders and most certainly doesn’t want Orbán to do it.
Invasions are properly deemed Acts of War and should be so treated, whether at our Southern border or in Vienna. But if one’s political leadership is by demagogues, people must take it into their own hands. It is coming if Trump is not re-elected.
Well haider died 15 years ago i meant his successor their were legit recordings sarc
Sorry, I was thinking of Sebastian Kurz….
I’m very, very disappointed in the Pope. Instead of wasting time and money on climate change, he should be reconverting Europe. Europe is lost. They let the illegal aliens in and their culture will soon be gone.
@Cicero:It is coming if Trump is not re-elected.
Still coming even if that unlikely event comes to pass, because the bureaucracy will refuse to obey him and Congress, GOP majorities or not, will refuse to help. Just like in 2016 – 2020. It’s going to take a lot more from us than electing Trump to do anything meaningful about it.
@Cornhead:They let the illegal aliens in and their culture will soon be gone.
The vast majority was quite legal. Europe’s governing class lets them do this. Ours prefers to do nothing to stop it and then legalize retroactively, but on both continents we are betrayed by the people we vote for. And we keep voting for them, and toss the betrayals in the memory hole.
Frankly, I’m not sure that Heaven is that thrilled about him either…
(To be fair, it is said—by those who would appear to know—that Heaven works in mysterious ways…)
he would have to first realize his mission, initially I cut him a little slack, but he does not know the Word, does not know his mission, so how can he reach people
what wisdom can he impart, hes as genuine as our own shambling heap
cornhead wrote: “I’m very, very disappointed in the Pope. Instead of wasting time and money on climate change, he should be reconverting Europe.”
Yeah, but that’s evangelizing, and Polite Catholics and Episcopalians think doing that is messy and unclean. Sure, it’s okay if the blessed Muslims do it, after all, you know them! but act like a Christian or like Christ matters? That’ll get you off the invite list for when they have the big dinner . . . .
In 1996 we spent 3 weeks in 3 different areas of France (Paris/the South/Loire region). I’ve never forgotten that at 1 point our then 7 year old son asked, “Where are the people my age?”
At our new address (almost 2 years now) we’ve been attending a conservative Catholic parish 8 minutes from our home. Many, many families even travel from a distance to attend. We love our priests, very rubric 1962 missal, but offering the Novus Ordo which I personally prefer. But it is so interesting–we’ve always been the “conservatives” in our former parishes, one of our sons designating the homilies the compliment of “Fr. CNN”. At this parish, we are the liberals. The traditionalist members are following the dictates of “no artificial birth control”. Lots of big families among us on Sundays. In light of the discussion in this post, one might draw a correlation about losing the culture being tied to family size. The anecdotal case can be made in our Catholic experience.
What really gets me is that this Muslim invasion and obvious Muslim moves towards takeover in many European countries did not have to happen, this was and is an entirely self-inflicted wound.
Their ancestors fought invading Muslim armies and defeated them, today’s people just lay down and let the Muslims just walk all over them, right into their countries to displace the blind and wimpy European natives.
I still don’t understand why the European elites have offered their countries to these “refugees”. Do they hate their own history that much? German, English, French, etc colonies left those places better than they found them. Do hate their own people that much? I need to know!
One reason might be to bolster the population of tax payers. But do these types of “refugees” actually contribute to their economies? What would happen if they didn’t import from the south and their indigenous population decreased because of the birthrate? Why would they even care? They are the elites after all, and they’ll make sure that they themselves are well taken care of just as any third world junta takes care of its people.
But in the meantime their own middle classes find themselves in the midst of a takeover, one that is increasingly violent. Why?
I remember some years ago seeing a short video of people from some Scandinavian country—a group of mostly women— very excitedly holding up handmade “welcome” signs as Muslim “immigrants“ came off of planes.
I wonder if the are still so welcoming?
Gordon, regarding evangelization – my understanding is that Christianity is making inroads in sub-Saharan Africa. That could be significant in the long run since that is where the highest birth rates are.
Or even Judaism? https://aish.com/reclaiming-my-igbo-jewish-heritage/
When one of them names a child Adolph Mohammed, look out!
Yawrate:
Originally they needed the workers. Especially true as their own birthrates were sinking. They didn’t realize how unlikely it would be that the new arrivals wouldn’t assimilate. Once they realized that, the number of Muslims in the population had reached critical mass and had become more radicalized, so the European leaders were afraid of riling them up.
In addition, some of the immigration in Britain at least was a result of policies that people could enter easily if they were from an ex-colony that was now a member of the British Commonwealth.
And then of course there was virtue signaling as well.
Originally they needed the workers
==
Whenever you state a need, you have an implicit purpose in mind.
==
@ArtDeco:Whenever you state a need, you have an implicit purpose in mind.
Yes indeed, and it was to keep wages low and reduce the political power of labor. A worker “shortage” is always code for “at the wage I’m willing to offer I can’t get enough people”.
Now there can be some trades or professions where it takes years to gain enough experience or education to be able to do the job, and a shortage is hard to relieve by paying more, but this isn’t who they meant when they were complaining of “shortages” and the need for immigrants and guest workers.
Why do most of the peoples of Europe just let these Muslim invasions and takeover attempts happen?
Well first, it seems to me that the Christian religion, faith, worldview, orientation, and rigor which motivated and sustained their ancestors was gradually weakened, and is now apparently no longer really a force to be reckoned with in some parts of Europe.
The pillar around which everything was organized and which formerly supported them is just gone.
Paralleling this, European native’s “civilizational confidence” was first undermined and then destroyed by an educational system and MSM which taught them that no civilization/culture was superior to any other; all civilizations were of equal worth.
However, Western civilization–all of its heroes frauds and their actions dishonorable–a civilization based on conquest, colonialism, and plunder–was actually inferior to all others, which were much more “authentic” and virtuous.
Thus, many of today’s Europeans have apparently been brainwashed–taught/do not see their individual nations, or Western civilization itself, as worth defending.
And this same process is underway here in the U.S.
I come back to the picture in my mind, mentioned above, of Scandinavian women positively jumping for joy and holding big “Welcome” signs, as Muslim immigrants (invaders) arrive in their country.
The root of all this is education.
The only way to reverse things is to take back our educational institutions, and that is very likely the work of generations, time which we just do not have.
Where is Charles Martel when you need him? Or John Sobieski?
I read Chesterton’s “Lepanto” and get depressed. Where’s Don John of Austria and where are his men?
Obviously those defenders of Christendom in the past were the products of a particular religiously oriented culture, one which saw the defense of that culture–which was the water they swam in and sustained them, and they saw as immanently worthy–by any and all means, including force, as very legitimate.
Today’s men are products of today’s culture, with Christianity a waning force–one no longer anywhere as pervasive or strong as it once was–and the use of violence is supposedly a bad thing; an era of double standards, one for us in the West, another for Muslims and other enemies of the West, an era of doubt rather than of certainty.
I state the obvious.
Facilitating this lack of defense of the West is an educational system which fails to valorize and teach the true history of the West and it’s true accomplishments, and which, at the same time, presents a false, a prettied up picture–just leaves out the true history and “bad parts”–and covers up the true nature of Islam.
The books which lay out the true history and nature of Islam have been written and are there to be read, but these are not the books that those who–if they even make the effort–are trying to get an understanding of Islam are usually directed to by our “educators.”
“Culture”
Why — and how strange it is to have to say — there’s a very large component of the extant political crisis standing right there in plain (albeit horribly unseen) sight.
Such, however, is the degenerated state of education in America, if not in the west in general. In the most important matters reckonable from a political perspective we simply do not know what it is we do not know! Nor make any attempt, therefore, to seek that knowledge out. It’s a shame to us.
If I could recommend one book on the history of Islam and, particularly, on Islam’s interactions with the West, it would be this one–
“The Legacy of Jihad: Islamic Holy War and the Fate of Non-Muslims”
edited by Andrew G. Bostom M.D
This is a substantial, well written, and extensively footnoted work, one which primarily uses material from Islamic sources to lay out the unapologetic actions of Islam and Muslims against all of us “unbelievers.”
It is instructive to note that on Amazon this book has only 84 reviews, while the several books lauding Islam and Muhammad by Karen Armstrong–hard to avoid when looking through any bookstore–have cumulatively many thousands of Amazon reviews.
