Roundup
I find myself doing more of these roundups these days because there’s just so much news.
(1) I’m surprised to learn that there actually were some writers at The NY Times who are reported to have urged caution on the headline and placement of that blame-Israel hospital bombing story, and that they were lower down on the hierarchy rather than higher up. Lower down tends to mean younger, but I would have imagined that it would be the older editors rather than younger people who were urging caution.
(2) Funny stuff on new Speaker Mike Johnson [hat tip: commenter “AesopFan”].
(3) Another change story, this time in Israel.
(4) The ACLU surprisingly defended Trump’s free speech rights in the Jack Smith trial:
“The obvious and unprecedented public interest in this prosecution, as well as the widespread political speech that it has generated and will continue to generate, only underscores the need to apply the most stringent First Amendment standard to a restraint on Defendant’s speech rights,” ACLU attorneys wrote in a friend-of-the-court brief.
The group urged Chutkan to reevaluate her order, calling it both vague and overbroad, with aspects of its meaning “unknown and perhaps unknowable.” One particular uncertainty the ACLU seized on was the meaning of Chutkan’s prohibition on statements that “target” Smith, his prosecutors, court personnel, defense attorneys or witnesses.
“Reading the order, Defendant cannot possibly know what he is permitted to say, and what he is not,” the group wrote.
Chutkan nevertheless reinstated the order. No surprise there.
(5) One of the Israelis kidnapped by Hamas has been freed by the IDF:
The Times of Israel reported that Megidish, a private who had served as an “observation soldier,” was captured during Hamas’ raid of Israel’s Nahal Oz base. She had likely been held alone by Hamas and a mission to bring her home had been planned for “several” days, the outlet reported. Israeli forces were reportedly met with resistance from Hamas, but no troops were injured or killed.
We’ll probably never know the details, but it’s good news.
(6) Shani Louk, the woman whose seemingly lifeless and broken body was barbarically paraded in front of joyous Gazan crowds, has been confirmed dead by the finding of a piece of skull matching her DNA. Of all the terrible horror stories connected with October 7, hers was one of the earliest to be known, and that was because the terrorists were so very proud of it. RIP.
And, coming out this morning, at least new to me, is the report that a baby in a kibbutz was found in an oven baked. True shades of the Holocaust.
Link on 3 gives me blank page.
The horrors coming out of Israel about what Hamas did are really hard to get your mind around. The Pro Palis Westerners just fail to see it which is almost just as horrible. Beyond my comprehension.
Go MAGA Mike!
Just saw that there were protestors in the Senate, with their hands covered in red (paint?). Are they going to be thrown into jail without bond and forever?
I’ve had the same problem as SHIREHOME with the link on (3): what comes up is a blank page.
I applaud ACLU’s principled position on the Trump gag order, but am skeptical.
Methinks this is like ACLU supporting Nazis marching in Skokie, IL in 1978.
Feasting on a turkey of Totalitarianism, they throw a bone of Liberty to the dogs, as a virtue signal.
The young woman’s body was driven around in the back of a truck for Gazan civilians to beat with sticks and otherwise defile. Tell me again how Gazan civilians are innocent non-combatants.
SHIREHOME; PA Cat:
The link works for me, so I’m not sure why you’re getting a black page. Maybe try a different browser? I’m using Chrome.
NYT editors, not necessarily the case that lower on the totem pole means younger. It could easily be older employees of a less-favored demographic, the Times has been earnestly promoting younger and more woke individuals to higher prestige roles while passing over those who might have been hired in years past.
Link #3 worked for me earlier today (Safari) but now comes up blank. Maybe a server volume problem at the linked site.
Neo–
I use Chrome too; I finally got the link to work for me around 6 p.m. I’m thinking Kate may be correct about an issue with the server volume.
Hamas jihadists deserve a long, tortuous, ‘unclean’ death. That however would require that tens of thousands of Israeli soldiers enter the tunnels with thousands of Israeli deaths. Which is why I’m in favor of dropping fuel/air bombs down the tunnel entrances.
The gaza health ministry is agajn the source for the jabaliya story
Different bylines though
Heres the link

It is not surprising to me that is was newer NYT staff who urged caution on the anti-Israel “reporting”. The newer younger ones are more likely to be under the foolishly naive impression that they were hired to report the news rather than transmit antisemitic propaganda. The more experienced ones know exactly what they are doing and would have quit this modern-day Der Sturmer long ago had they a shred of integrity or decency.
Tunnel warfare is where you need lots of small, armored and armed wheeled drones. Might needed shielded cables following along behind them for the controllers to use to communicate with the device.

Old Testament thought? Is Gazaland as evil as Sodom and Gomorrah. Are there any righteous people in Gazaland?

Stinks to high heaven. I wouldn’t at all begrudge Israel were Blinken declared png. But no way that can happen, despite that it should.

Tunnels and caves. Avoid going in, blow ’em up, seal ’em in. FAFO
Funny you should mention that

Speaking of Trotsky, I read his book My Life : An Attempt at an Autobiography. He introduced the chapters with bits of Marx and tried to explain developments using the dialectic. He totally missed the fact that he was an arrogant asshole, and that that might have affected events 🙂 I’ve got to wonder about anyone who would join a Trotskyist organization.
(2) A real Speaker Johnson story, not satire. I’m really beginning to like this guy!

It won’t survive the Senate and Biden would veto it if it did, but at least the GOP House is doing their job for a change.
Yep, I was right — very aggravating that the NYP seems to have pulled this off the AP wire (or some such) without any push-back or even commentary to the Biden Inc press release; might just as well have been in the WaPo.

(4) @ Jordan Rivers > “Feasting on a turkey of Totalitarianism, they throw a bone of Liberty to the dogs, as a virtue signal.”
It’s possible that this is the ACLU’s thinking, especially since they can appear to support Free Speech (and I agree with all their positions, as does Turley), knowing that it won’t make any difference because the judge’s order will stand long enough to damage Trump, which is apparently her objective, even if the Supremes strike down the gag order later (IF they do).
However, they could also be hedging bets against an eventual return of the GOP, not wanting to have such a broad order as precedent that could be used against their own side, given the Left’s penchant for virulent invective when on the defensive.
I would suspect some of both.

@ miguel > for the link in re PA as the “moderates” being a nonstarter — Blinken is either a knave or a fool or both.
https://palwatch.org/page/34650
Readers here will recall that Trump ended any aid to Gaza and the PA because of “pay to slay” and Biden resumed it immediately after inauguration.
He only has Israel’s back because he’s looking for the best place to stick in the knife.
I saw this story earlier today, but Ace has something to say about it.

Some good news on another front.
I, among others, have long felt that the only way to end the inclusion of men (whether physically transitioned or imposters) in women’s sports was for the women to refuse to play along. I won’t rehash the reasons given for why so many have acquiesced in this farce, but one may have been that they were only (!) losing medals, rank / standing, and privacy — and now it’s clear they could also lose their lives.
