Lots of thunderstorms around New England — 5 Comments

  1. New Haven is presently under a severe thunderstorm watch– judging from the NWS radar, Danbury is already getting the storm, with Bridgeport next in line. The cats are hunkering down, which is usually a more accurate indicator than the NWS.

  2. Yesterday Merrimack Valley (Lawrence, Methuen, Andover) and down into the North Shore got hit hard with a line of storms (derecho?). One minute things were cloudy but lit next minute sky was black with VERY heavy rain and wind rocking trees (gale force at least). It was all over in maybe 30 minutes. Several trees down, summer has been wet and any vaguely rotten tree has been breaking in any wind and with the soil saturated and full leaves trees are easy to knock over even if healthy. My understanding is a couple homes over in Andover took some major damage from branches and tree falls. Just about as schools were letting out so a bit hairy for the buses.

  3. The train was stalled for about 45 minutes in one place and over 15 minutes in another. They were clearing downed branches off the tracks. On the way from the station home, we saw one largish downed branch in the gutter, but no other signs that a storm or rain had happened. Some places were without power, but our area was lucky.

  4. I’ve been visiting near Concord in Massachusetts and was here when a fierce storm blew through at around 2:30 Friday afternoon. It moved fast and was gone within half an hour, but the sky was black and the wind in the first 10 minutes had just that sound that people describe after tornadoes: a deep, constant, escalating roar like an approaching freight train. The power in our house promptly went off and then stayed off for the next 30 hours, not coming back until late Saturday evening (which is why I didn’t see this post until today!) This is a woodsy area, and so many trees and were down on the roads that the school buses couldn’t get through and kids were held at school until late on Friday. Trees fell on several houses and a telephone pole fell on a car with a driver inside, but nobody was hurt. It’s been quite the adventure!
