Ronstadt is one of the great singers of my generation. There is a wonderful biopic on YouTube depicting her life and career. She sang everything, including light opera.
There is another great biopic on YouTube about the Everly Brothers.
Linda and the Everly Brothers came from musical families and were exposed to a wide variety of kinds of music while growing up.
I would prefer to just listen to the song.
Last night there was a lot of stupidity going on about what is happening in Russia. Comments like “It’s the CIA” or “Distraction from Hunter”. Today I think you can see that this is real and a threat to Putin. If what’s his name from the Wagner Group takes over it will be a real disaster. I think he would use nukes in Ukraine and maybe elsewhere. Not going to be pretty.
And China may put a finger or two into the mix to really make things REAL.
Warning to other readers of Neo’s blog: this is a highly speculative comment. I’m way out of my depth when talking about international finance. Maybe someone else here has some expertise. If so, I’d be happy to hear your thoughts.
On June 1, a Bloomberg article reported on the meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in Cape Town (https://tinyurl.com/bdzdbxdm). The meeting’s purpose was to prepare for a summit of BRICS heads of state, scheduled to be held August 22-24, in Johannesburg. According to Bloomberg, the BRICS foreign ministers have proposed serious consideration of an alternative BRICS currency. Recent internet rumor mongering has even floated the idea that plans for implementation of this new BRICS currency will be released at the August meeting.
The idea of a BRICS currency has been discussed for many years, but recent US sanctions of Russia have made this a more urgent issue. Maybe China is looking at the potential consequences of an invasion of Taiwan. If they weren’t dependent on the US dollar for trade, then they’d be far less vulnerable to US sanctions. Unfounded internet rumors suggest that the new currency would be digital and partially backed by gold and other commodities.
The possibility of a new BRICS currency has been fortified by other countries’ recent interest in joining the BRICS group. Among these other countries are Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Both would bring oil, gold, and petrodollars to the BRICS. Supposedly, more than twenty countries want to join the BRICS group. If that happens, then the group will clearly be large enough to support a new currency. Both optimists and pessimists point to the Euro as precedent. The optimists say “here’s proof that it can be done.” The pessimists say “managing a currency without monetary policy control is impossible, and managing a currency without fiscal policy control is very hard.”
After the Wagner Group’s mutiny, will Russian instability work against the introduction of a BRICS currency, or will it simply reinforce Chinese dominance? Would a new BRICS currency, and a new BRICS bank in Shanghai, become little more than a front for Chinese economic and foreign policy? Would Brazil, India, and Saudi Arabia accept this as the price for escaping from the threat of US sanctions?
Oh noes, we must save Vlad or Perghozin will nuke Ukraine! Not that Vlad has been threatening to nuke any and all, over Ukraine. Nope, down the memory hole.

I think BRICs currency ambitions are good. But why not use Bitcoin? The difficulty is large, if only because USD assures liquidity, and commodity and export countries are notoriously illiquid. And stock market value is around half the size of the total USD debt market. So, even beginning a currency to exchange for commodities is a long way from displacing the USD.
But China, the seeming contrarian, is a shop for manufactures. Different than most of the others And their national debt is twice the US. Cratering debt finance there puts its place among BRICs in doubt, security-wise. Devaluing the Renminbi is expected in coming days because GDP is crucial, and youth unemployment is growing, 22% IIRC. Currency devaluation ought to increase exports.
Peter Zeihan (See YT) is good at pointing out the weaknesses of the Chines economy.
Now, after Putin and the Wagner coup. Does that make China a winner? Do they benefit? Yes, yes.
But that’s short term. Longer-term issues persist. And many, certainly most, are negative with China. (Pace, Zeihan.)
A BRIC currency would facilitate commodity exchange, but mostly among members. A larger, more liquid currency still takes decades to develop.
Those are my initial thoughts. Perhaps I’ll have more later, because this is complex — currency trust depends on trust. Trust grows from security. And the US has provided that since the WWII, only leaving the field to splinter. Is there a serious power to displace the US? No. Not yet.
If this isn’t a smoking gun, I don’t know what is.
A few days before $5. 1 million dollars were deposited into Hunter Biden accounts, Hunter Biden sent this strong-arm whatsapp message to one of Hunter’s “business partners,” a Chinese executive named Henry Zhao, who apparently had ties to Chinese intelligence services.
“I am sitting here with my father and we would like to understand why the commitment made has not been fulfilled. Tell the director that I would like to resolve this now before it gets out of hand, and now means tonight. And, Z, if I get a call or text from anyone involved in this other than you, Zhang, or the chairman, I will make certain that between the man sitting next to me and every person he knows and my ability to forever hold a grudge that you will regret not following my direction. I am sitting here waiting for the call with my father.”*

Great song. I do like the variations as the refrains are repeated. The song New Kid In Town by the Eagles is excellent in that regard. The lyrics variations of the refrain are an encapsulated arc of the story.
P.S. Of course, Hunter Biden could say anything, including that his father, President Biden, was sitting right next to him when he wasn’t, so, unless someone can prove that Joe Biden was in the room when this watsapp document was made and sent, it doesn’t prove anything about Joe Biden’s involvement in this particular scheme.

He brings back memories; I was on the periphery of the NYC theater scene for a couple of months in the early ’60s (then we broke up 🙂 ). Rudetsky is a type – very fast speaking with theatrical, almost stereotypically gay, gestures, but smart and talented. I knew a couple of guys very like him, but they never “made it”. Theater is a cruel business, it chews ’em up and spits ’em out. Luck or divine providence is the difference between fame and comfort and obscurity and penury.
And it’s a great song.
RE: UFOs–As I see this wild garden of opinions–
As I’ve written, and as present day whistleblower David Grusch and many people before him have asserted, elements within the government have been running a UFO disinformation campaign for many decades, starting at least since the crash at Roswell in 1947, and some say some decades earlier.
The idea has been to divert attention and to confuse the issue, to encourage many wild and florid characters and claims, to lay false trails, to make UFOs and Aliens figures of fun–cartoon characters, and discountable entertainment– and to occasionally inject some true piece of information, usually “sandwiched between two lies” into the mix, to stigmatize the subject and those who come forward with their testimonies about it, to mock them and to figuratively clap “tinfoil hats” on these people and to make them figures of ridicule and disdain, to make this subject “radioactive,” and poisonous to people’s careers, to generate so much doubt, to throw up so much chaff, to generate so much chaotic noise that the “signal,” the actual truth, can never really be discerned.
There is a very wide spectrum of different opinions on this subject—Dr. David Greer, and some other’s view is that whoever or whatever is controlling UFOs, whoever or whatever is behind this phenomenon, is totally benign—they are peaceful entities, our “Space Brothers,” apparently here to uplift us, and to usher us into a new and better age.
It seems like “experiencer” Whitley Strieber, author of many books about his experiences with these Aliens, views what these Aliens are doing as essentially benign, but more like an example of ”tough love.”
Then, there is long time cattle mutilation expert and UFO researcher Linda Moulton Howe, author of several books on these subjects, who believes that there are several Alien species involved here on Earth.
Dr. Diana Pasulka, author of “American Cosmic,” appears to be, as yet, undecided, and may perhaps sit somewhere in the middle.
Then, there are those like Lou Elizondo, who appears to not be so sure about this benign “Space Brother” interpretation and that—as far as he is able to reveal to us–the jury is still out.
Finally, at the other end of the spectrum of opinion from Dr. Greer, there is former Temple University Associate Professor of American History Dr. David M. Jacobs, author of five books on the subject, whose 50 years of research on the Abductee phenomenon has convinced him that these Aliens are engaged in a sinister, long term program of hybridization, and infiltration, one aimed at taking over the Earth, which you might guess from the ominous title of his last book, “Walking Among Us: The Alien Plan to Control Humanity”*

If I’m ever feeling bored, arrogant or need cheering up, I watch a video on the octopus. The above is a great one. The footage of octopuses changing colors for camouflage is amazing — yet the octopus only sees black and white. Plus the usual octo tricks of opening tightly closed jars and bottles.

RE: UFO crash cases–
The December 9th 1965 UFO crash at small town Kecksburg, PA apparently drew a similar kind of response as at Roswell.
Locals saw something streak down out of the sky and crash in the woods, then, some witnesses saw something glowing blue in the woods, saw the police and military seal off the area, saw men in hazmat suits and masks carrying a large crate into the woods–all this activity, all sorts of people running around the crash site—apparently directed by several civilian men in suits.
Then, the military carted something pretty large and acorn shaped, which was covered with a tarp, out of town on a flatbed, and the story and official Blue Book verdict was that a meteor had crashed.
This video contains an interview of two of the remaining living witnesses plus, most especially, questions asked of a little old lady, the late Jennie R. Zeidman, (who passed in 2020, during the filming of the series mentioned below) who was the last living member of Project Blue Book, and who retained 10,000 of J. Allen’s Hynek’s files from Blue Book.
In her interview, she says that the meteor story, as written up in the Project Blue Book files she has, is crap, that a UFO crashed and, moreover, she says, very calmly and quietly, that “we are doomed,” and that we humans can do nothing against Aliens who are so much more advanced/powerful than we are. **

My problem with such X-Files scenarios is that I assume any aliens who can visit Earth are tens of thousands of years more advanced.
If they wanted to take over, I assume it wouldn’t be much more trouble than sending “Top Gun” Tom Cruise & Friends to handle the teenagers who built Stonehenge.
huxley–Perhaps, as in a Science Fiction story I once read, these Aliens derive some sort pleasure or satisfaction from just observing us, and are not all that impatient to take over.
The idea of possible Aliens watching our antics for mordant and hilarious entertainment–especially if they are plugged into sources of frequent hilarity, and just plain stupidity and trendiness like Youtube and TikTok–cannot be discounted.

Perhaps the Fermi Paradox is wrong and there are aliens out there, but I doubt there are many. Therefore, humans are likewise rare and interesting, worth study and preservation, as we do other life on earth.
I don’t see the upside for aliens taking over the earth. With enough energy an advanced civilization could create whatever worlds it wanted and I assume such a civilization would have such energy.
I guess there could be a civilization like Fred Saberhagen’s Berserker machine series, with only a mission to KILL wherever it found life, but it just seems unlikely. If such did arise, it strikes me other aliens would kill it in self-defense.

RE: UFOs—Why the secrecy?
Over many years of reading, looking at cases and at people’s statements, and thinking, plus, most recently, evaluating the objective, “scientific” evidence that has come to hand in these last few years, I have come to the realization that, as opposed to the supposed “make believe” of Science Fiction, UFOs–as supposedly against consensus reality, and convention, as “crazy” as the idea may once have seemed–are increasingly likely to be real.
First, to understand the scope of our problem, you must realize that UFOs are not just a United States problem, they are reportedly a world-wide problem–a human race problem–which, if totaled up, would probably add up to many thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands such UFO reports world-wide each year.
Cream off the top 5% of those reports as being likely real UFOs, and that is still a huge number of UFOs flying around, as they travel with impunity though the air spaces above probably every one of our nations, likely in our solar system and in orbit above the Earth, and in, through, and out of the waters of every ocean and sea on this planet.
I obviously believe that what Air Force whistleblower David Grusch has said very likely presents a true picture of our situation with regard to UFOs, and that many of the speculations and rumors in books—in popular entertainment as well, think, among many others, of elements included in the “X-Files” and in “Independence Day”–about this situation over the decades also contained elements of the truth—as I wrote elsewhere, “pieces of Truth sandwiched between two lies.”
Thus, UFOs, UFO crash, retrieval, and reverse engineering programs, private aerospace company involvement, Aliens and Alien bodies, and a decade’s long coverup and disinformation campaign, run by both government and corporate elements, are all increasingly likely real things.
Given all this as true, what is the reason for the 80 years of secrecy?
Well, there have been a lot of guesses—primarily involving national security, securing some major technological advantages, money, stability and “ontological shock”–
1. The possibility of gaining an insurmountable technical advantage over any potential enemies, assuring American dominance—perhaps even close to permanent dominance–over our world.
2. Money to be made from slowly releasing some of the information gained and products developed which derive from Alien technology.
3. The fear that releasing the information about the existence of Aliens, and that “we are not alone” would result in an “ontological shock” so great that it would shake and perhaps destroy the foundations of each and every aware person’s world, and of our human religions, philosophies, economies, and societies—everything really—with the possibility that the current world order—our present “arrangements,” and centers of politics, power, influence, and financial dominance–would all just collapse in chaos and violence, crumble, and blow way.
(This, I think, a much more realistic concern back in the Roswell days, in the 1940s into the 1960s, when all our cultures hadn’t yet been effectively saturated with and prepared for the ideas of the reality of UFOs and Aliens by our entertainment industries, various science fiction writers, thinkers, and artists.
And, who knows, this many also have been/be a “just in case” parallel and separate arm of the disinformation campaign—preparing the ground, the intellectual battle space, for if word about the reality of UFOs and eve everything else should accidentally or deliberately escape deep cover and containment. In fact, the trip hammer of new information regarding UFOs, appearing on a more and more frequent basis these past few years, months, and up to the present day, may possibly be the initial steps leading to an attempted “soft release”).
All of these considerations are probably significant factors behind the secrecy.
But, I think that there may be one primary and overriding reason, and that is that, as 88 year old Jennnie R. Zeidman–the recently passed, last surviving member of Project Blue Book, and Dr. Alan J. Hynek’s first secretary, then, research assistant (who was in possession of 10,000 of Dr. Hynek’s Blue Book files)–said in a recent Discovery Channel+ show, “UFO Witness”–a show which flew under the radar–her view was that “we are doomed,” because “we have no chance” at all against beings who are so vastly superior to us humans in technology.

Our extremely well-funded militaries, with all of their fancy and gleaming “toys,” and tasked with our defense, and our governments do not want to reveal to us—the human race–that they are powerless, that we humans may be completely powerless to stop Aliens—and perhaps even a number of different species of Aliens who have come to Earth—from–if it is their will–doing whatever they want here on this our planet, in our solar system, and with us.
Authorities very unwilling to reveal the news that, at our current stage of comparatively “primitive” space development–with no actual functioning, mass production spacecraft, in the hundreds or even in the dozens, of any real solar system-spanning range, no routine spaceflight to the moon or planets and their many moons, out to the Oort Cloud, or to the Asteroid belt to collect resources or even to plant settlements, no huge man-made satellites in various orbits housing large populations of humans, no manufacturing hubs in orbit churning out exotic products, no colonies on the other planets or moons of our solar system, and no extra-solar flight capabilities—and despite working on reverse engineering the technology contained in retrieved UFOs for 80 years, now–there apparently isn’t a damn thing we can do about whatever Aliens might want to do; we simply may not have the necessary capabilities, nor the necessary power, to fight back.
We may simply be totally outclassed; we are defenseless against anything that any Aliens—having mastered spaceflight, and likely interstellar flight to boot–might want to do, since whoever controls the orbitals, and is willing to throw cheap, easy to obtain rocks (which have the impact power of nuclear weapons without the radiation) on those below, controls whatever planet is below.
That situation, that “somber” realization, that necessary “reevaluation of our supposed “apex predator” status,” vis-a-vis any other, higher beings who may exist, may be what Lou Elizondo has been hinting at in some of his more oracular answers to some interviewers.
So far, if there are Aliens–except for the many reported Abductions–they have seemingly not yet moved in on us in a major way here on Earth, but the questions are, what, if anything, do they want, how will they go about getting it, and what could we humans possibly do about it?
Moreover, curiosity being what it is, what is the nature of these Aliens, how do they think, what priorities and values might motivate them, what are they capable of doing, and why?

How about all of those electronic gadgets–TVs, coffee makers, refrigerators, thermostats, drones, cameras and security systems, and various other Amazon products, etc. termed the “universe of things? which you (or perhaps they) can increasingly connect into a network, a system to conveniently run everything, (and which can listen in to your every word and record and transmit them to who knows where)?
Question, do you often sit in front of your TV and watch shows when you have very few, or even no clothes on?

cb–That’s the problem, since classifications have been so high, or likely rogue, deeply secret research programs have been hidden, buried, within other SAP and/or “waived” programs, thus researched by only a small number of scientists able to be cleared at the highest levels, plus the fact that there has been such a successful manufactured stigma surrounding this issue of UFOs, most of the research community has not wanted to touch such UFO research with a ten foot pole.
As has been said, the supposed “best minds”–and a lot of them–have not been turned loose on any of these UFO issues.
I can’t think of any female pop singer who could touch her.

The other night I was watching “The Maltese Falcon” with French subtitles. At the climactic scene when Capt. Jacoby shows up at Sam Spade’s office with the Falcon and promptly dies of gunshot wounds, Effie, the secretary gets woozy and looks like she might faint.
Spade says, You can’t pass out on me. However the subtitle reads, Tu vas pas me tomber dans les pommes.
When I saw that line flash across the bottom of the screen, I wondered, You can’t fall in the apples? What am I misunderstanding now?
Turns out tomber dans les pommes is a perfectly fine French idiom for fainting.
Apparently it goes back to a personal letter written by George Sand, the 19th C French novelist who was actually a woman and in her time was more popular than Victor Hugo and Honoré de Balzac.
Sand was quite prolific –70 novels and 50 miscellaneous. She even had an affair with Chopin (among others). I didn’t know.

RE: UFOs–Why the secrecy cont’d
Release of government held information about UFOs and what they have done over the decades to protect that information and keep it buried might also unleash legal prosecutions against some people, and even for some aerospace companies i.e.–
Other very plausible reasons for maintaining this deep secrecy that I forgot to mention are things like the fact that, in order to successfully carry out the coverup and disinformation campaigns, certain measures had to be taken against some groups and individuals–from various kinds of intimidation, to retaliations of various sorts, to, it is alleged, some assassinations.
Then, there is the money which has presumably been misappropriated and diverted from legitimate programs into deeply buried rogue ones.
Finally, there is the possibility of civil lawsuits, which could potentially be brought by various aerospace companies against their rival companies, who may have been given an unfair advantage by being given some Alien material or craft to work on.
So, the release of the truth about UFOs and the government and aerospace company role in the suppression of the truth for almost 80 years would open a huge and complicated bucket of worms on many fronts.
