Something to take away the bad taste of the Navy’s drag queen fiasco and give baseball fans of any team something to cheer for: the commissioning Saturday afternoon of the USS Cooperstown, a littoral combat ship (shallow-water vessel designed for warfare near a shoreline) named for the town that houses the Baseball Hall of Fame. “Adorned with the motto, ‘America’s Away Team,’ the vessel honors the 70 Baseball Hall of Famers who served in the military during the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. . . . Each stateroom of the USS Cooperstown is named after one of the veterans, with a replica of their HOF plaque placed on the door.”

Hi there. PA+Cat, that was a nice item about the Cooperstown.
This video about tree evolution was quite stimulating. I liked the narration quality – unusually good for videos these days. Of course, it’s from a professional source, so I shouldn’t be so surprised, but it’s still refreshing. The only puzzlement for me comes when I hear this fingernails-on-chalkboard unelided ‘the’ before a vowel sound, as in “the* evolution” (i.e., “the” rendered as ‘thuh’ in that sound context rather than ‘thee’ in order to blend properly). Given his pretty high-quality diction in all other respects, I find it once again incongruous. My pet peeve coming out again….
But back to trees, I found myself thinking about the story of Archaeopteris (at first I thought he was talking about the primeval bird-reptile creature) in relation to the Pangaea timeline and continental movements. Putting that in parallel with the timepoints mentioned in the video, I can see how it could have come about. So it all works out nicely, with a high information density.
(With a video about trees conquering the world, no one has yet mentioned Ents?!)
A few things you don’t necessarily need to know about “What’s New Pussycat?” (1965)
______________________
* It was intended as a sex comedy vehicle for Warren Beatty about male sex addiction.
* Beatty was a legendary Hollywood womanizer. He called his women “Pussycat” so he wouldn’t have to remember their names. “What’s new, Pussycat?” was his standard phone greeting for women.
* Beatty admits that “diva’ed out” and lost the starring role.
* He was replaced by Peter O’Toole. I must say O’Toole threw himself into the role, although it was definitely silly.
* Groucho Marx was supposed to play the deranged psychoanalyst, but O’Toole lobbied for Peter Sellers and won. Nonetheless the film does have a strong Marxian flavor.
* Woody Allen was paid $30,000 for the script but insisted on a film role, which was his first and paved the way for his film career.
* In the final scene O’Toole marries one of his pussycats, but when the couple goes to the female clerk to sign the marriage certificate, O’Toole responds to the clerk’s beauty by calling her “pussycat” and his wife, understandably, loses it and chaos ensues.
But not before I realized, OMG, the clerk was Françoise Hardy, one of the founding ye-ye singers, and — pour moi — the most beautiful French woman of all time.
Now that you’ve brought up Warren Beatty, your French lesson of the day has to do with the French equivalent of the English slang word for the female vagina, namely la chatte, or p—y. This use of the word is considered vulgar, as “la chatte” is a perfectly respectable term in ordinary French usage as well as in veterinary medicine for a mature female cat– however, all kittens are chatons [masculine] without regard to their biological sex. I looked around to see whether the song associated with the 1965 movie has ever been translated into French, and . . . it has, at least informally. It’s interesting that the translator uses “chaton” or kitten as the equivalent of “pussycat”– anyway, here ya go:
Quoi de neuf, chaton?
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Quoi de neuf, chaton?
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh, oh
Chaton, chaton
J’ai des fleurs et beaucoup d’heures

Alors vas repoudrer
Ton petit nez de chaton
Chaton, chaton, je t’aime
Je t’assure
Toi et ton nez de chaton
Quoi de neuf, chaton?
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Quoi de neuf, chaton?
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh, oh
Chaton, chaton
Tu es si excitante
Et j’ai tellement envie
De m’occuper de toi
Alors vas maquiller
Tes grands yeux de chaton . . .
On a more exalted literary level, Colette (a noted cat lover as well as a woman of letters) published a short novel in 1933 titled La Chatte, about a love triangle between a newly married couple and the husband’s pet cat Saha. The wife, jealous of the cat, tries to kill her, but Saha survives. The husband then leaves his wife to move back in with his mother and Saha.
Saha is supposedly based on one of Colette’s pet cats, a Chartreux. The Chartreux has become a famous French cat breed since WWII; FWIW, Charles de Gaulle kept Chartreux cats, as did Charles Baudelaire. Now you can discuss French cats with your online tutor as well as other subjects.
