  1. Well, at least Neo left out wog, “a racial slur in Australian English and British English applied to people from the Mediterranean region such as Southern Europeans and North Africans. . . . The saying, ‘The wogs begin at Calais’ (implying that everyone who is not British is a wog), appears to date from the First World War but was popularised by George Wigg, Labour MP for Dudley, in 1949 when in a parliamentary debate concerning the Burmese, Wigg shouted at the Conservative benches, ‘The Honourable Gentleman and his friends think they are all “wogs.” Indeed, the Right Honourable Member for Woodford [i.e., Winston Churchill] thinks that the “wogs” begin at Calais.'”

  2. I should have added that Neo also omitted that other current pejorative, namely prog. Readers can easily supply their own examples of this mindset.

  3. Thanks, Neo, for all that you do. I check your blog almost every day, but rarely comment. As a male, I appreciate a female point of view on the topics you cover. We are of the same generation, and that is very important to me for perspective. Keep up the good work.

  4. Scott the Badger:

    “sub par?” That’s absolutely awful!

Sending prayers for you and the family.

  5. SCOTTtheBADGER:

How dreadful! I hope everyone is okay, and that you were able to rescue some of your things.

  6. Alas, no, I lost everything in the building. But I survived, which is all that matters. Everything else can eventually be replaced.

  7. Man.

I’m really sorry to hear that your house was destroyed, SCOTTtheBADGER.

I hope that you + everyone involved are doing well.
