Lots of people seem to be making a big deal about Fetterman’s apparent debate disaster last night. Personally I would rather not watch any clips. I have a strong aversion to watching mentally compromised people struggle to speak coherently on a public stage like that. It just feels exploitative to me. I know it’s been said a bunch already, but it’s so nakedly cynical that the Democrats evidently have zero problem with putting such people in positions of power. Whether we’re talking about Joe Biden, Dianne Feinstein, or Nancy Pelosi (who seems like she may have some age related mental issues from time to time), morally and ethically the Democrats seem to be fine with having essentially a meat puppet that votes how they want. That says everything about the current state of that party. It’s just depressing.
Thanks NEO, I really like seeing these kind of Videos from Past Times. Don’t you wonder who some of these people were? Was the fight between the two men staged? A Temperence March? The clothing worn by the Women must really interest you Neo.
I went to Tim Pool’s youtube site to watch a replay of him and his staff livestreaming the Fetterman – Oz debate. I found it sad and exploitative and just as I was about to switch it off Tim Pool insisted his site stop the coverage. He apologized to viewers who had tuned in to watch the livestream, but after watching a few minutes he determined it seemed morally, ethically wrong to watch and critique it, Fetterman was so obviously compromised.
So, credit to Tim Pool. I think he made the right call. It probably would have helped his site had he and his colleagues piled on and made sport of Fetterman, but he decided, in real time, to pull the plug on the coverage.
Nonapod,
It’s not just Democrats. In the U.S. the role of a politician is to represent his or her constituents, drawing a salary as payment for his or her work.
That’s it. That’s what the job is.
Since the job is voluntary (it’s not hereditary like King Charles, or mandatory like attending school until age 16 in the U.S., or a draft during wartimes) and the sole duty is to represent one’s constituents if one is incapable one should not run. If another volunteer steps forward who is more capable, one should bow out of the race and lend one’s support to that person.
In my household, if the goal is to host guests for a Thanksgiving meal we divide and conquer based on our abilities. My wife is much better at decorating the table than I, so she does that while I clean the turkey and prepare it and put it in the oven. Our kids split up duties of making desserts, cleaning the house… Whomever is available carries extra tables and chairs up from the basement.
It’s lead, follow or get out of the way.
If politicians had as their one and only goal seeing that their constituents are represented as capably as possible they would gladly step aside when unable to fulfill their duties, or when someone else volunteers who is more capable.
It’s not about them. It’s about us.
But for most all of them it is, sadly, about them.
It’s not about them. It’s about us.
How clarifying and simple. Which is why I can have all the sympathy in the world for his medical condition, and none for the position in which he has placed himself.
It’s really good for donations to parties and PACs and ratings (which are media shorthand for dollar donations to the broadcasters) to make politics a battle. In a battle one fights to win, regardless.
In July of 1940 the Germans had a better army than England. But the British did not surrender because it was an existential threat. Churchill didn’t assess Germany and conclude, “Well, they’ve got a better army, they’re more organized, their citizens are, by and large, more physically fit, their universities are currently turning out more gifted scientists… well, that’s that, we’re all Germans now.”
No.
“We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”
That attitude can rally a nation to do great things. And in countries like North Korea, Iran, China, Russia and many others it follows that their politicians adopt such an approach to their jobs and duties.
Unfortunately our political system has devolved into using the imagery and language of existential war to feed campaign funds, promote ratings and choose our representatives. The U.S. and Britain did not get rid of FDR or Churchill during WWII. Technically, the electorate could have, but they would not. It was too important to stay with the same representation.
We have to get out of this “war footing” mentality in our political system. This is not how our country is structured.
Mike Plaiss @1:31,
And if the media were truly interested in being proxy spokespeople for the American public they would simply ask Fetterman, “Mr. Fetterman, it is unfortunate you recently suffered a stroke. Your capacity is currently diminished and we are hoping you will soon recover fully, but do you agree you are not currently as capable as you were prior to suffering the stroke and it would be best for the citizens of Pennsylvania to step aside until you make that full recovery?”
Media. Interested.
Hell Rufus, you’re as funny as Groucho Marx.
SHIREHOME,
The attitudes of the fighters appear legitimate, but with the technology of the day it’s hard to imagine the cameraman (might even take more than one person to wrangle the equipment back then) happened upon the fight randomly. But, maybe the camera was set-up to film that area for some reason and a fight did, spontaneously break out?
My guess is it is staged based on the restraints of the technology, but who knows? Also, the somersault the guy on the left does at the end seems overly theatric.
About 10 seconds into the film there is a young boy running in front of the street car. Of course! I never thought about it, but of course children would do that. I used to do something similar with city buses as a child. If I was walking on the sidewalk and one stopped at a bus stop next to me I would run and see how long I could keep up. Once moving the buses would quickly overtake me, but if they had to stop at the next corner I could catch, and overtake them. It was great fun, as much fun as the boy in the film appears to be having. Often I could tell the drivers had noticed and were in on the game. In those instances I would wave as I overtook them and could see the drivers frustration that a passenger had pulled the “stop requested” cord.
The past may be a foreign country but kids are kids!
Rufis T. Firefly: It’s not just Democrats. In the U.S. the role of a politician is to represent his or her constituents, drawing a salary as payment for his or her work.

It’s not about them. It’s about us.
But for most all of them it is, sadly, about them.
You’re refering to the larger problems with our system rather than just the issue of putting literally brain damaged people in power. And I agree with all your points.
Of course in a better world all elected politicians would only serve their constituents to the best of their abilities. Or at least that would be their number 1 priority with regards to executing their duties while in office. But politicians are human beings and human beings have agendas. And those agendas may not always align with the needs and desires of their constituents. They may decide that it’s better to line their own pockets and/or they may simply get off on the trappings of power and not really care much about the needs of their annoying constituents.
So we’re stuck with imperfect humans who may lie, cheat, and steal or may be mentally deficient or brain damaged or just have a lot of really bad ideas. But despite all that they still managed to get elected anyway because they’re able to dupe enough people with the help of a corrupt and stupid media (or worse, garner enough “votes” with the help of a corrupt and stupid election apparatus also filled with human beings with agendas).
I can’t really speak to any solutions for this state of affairs without getting all SciFi. For example, would an Artificial Intelligence be better at making decisions? Or would we end up with a nightmare SkyNet from the Terminator movies or “Colossus: The Forbin Project” or whatever?
As for dealing with brain damaged or mentally comprimised people, I would be all for requiring mental competency exams be administer to anyone running for Federal level elected office. And semi-regular (once a year?) actual mental competency exams for all incumbent elected officials at the Federal level if it was feasible, perhaps in particular for people over the age of 75.
The other great job of colorizing was the movie “They Shall Not Grow Old.” We saw it twice in theaters and bought the DVD.
I see that Cicero just posted on a previous thread– I take it that his health is improving? (In reference to Neo’s post about him last week).

Canadian Licensing requirement for internet users enacted by Canadian Senate, last night. Any Canadian citizen with an internet connection is now a “broadcaster” and, as such, may not “send” anything, that is not approved. https://canada.justice.gc.ca/eng/csj-sjc/pl/charter-charte/c11_2.html
A time and world lost in the mists of history. 100 years from now, those living may well look back on this time with the same curiosity.
Democrat indifference to the mental capability of their chosen candidate is entirely in keeping with their collectivism. Individualism that strays from the approved narrative is verboten, most recently demonstrated by the 30 congressional democrats who signed a letter to Biden urging him to explore every possible pathway to negotiating a peace in the war in Ukraine. Blowback was so severe they immediately rescinded the letter.

I’m going to wager the sites you’ve been consulting are confused.
Once upon a time I wrote professional color correction software. When necessary, I would talk to “color scientists” who knew the physics and some of the human functioning involved. (Not simple.)

Sure, the grass looks green, as it should, but how close to the real green people saw that day? And what is the real green?
