The Trudeau government tells the Canadian Senate, “Because, reasons!”
The Canadian Senate is deliberating the extension of the Emergencies Act activation that the House has already approved. As part of that process, debates are ongoing.
I have almost zero doubt that the Senate will be going along with the House. The body is dominated by Trudeau supporters, for one thing. But I thought I’d highlight something that emerged during the questioning of the government’s representative Marc Gold:
The senators got down to the basic question of why do you need it if the protesters are no longer camped outside of Parliament and there are no longer any blockades? What’s the point besides a huge power grab by Justin Trudeau?
They also wanted to know what intelligence or data they were basing their request for the Act on, to begin with. The government never provided that information to the Parliament. The government representative said they made the decision based on intelligence they “couldn’t share.”
“‘What is equally clear, as we all know, and as I stated in response to an earlier question, that I cannot share, and the government cannot share and should not share the intelligence that it may have received that helped inform their decision,’ he continued.”
Just trust us; we are asking for dictatorial powers for a really really good reason that must remain secret even from you, the legislators. That’s extraordinary, and no member of the legislature ought to accept it. But it’s almost a certainty that they will, they will.
And of course, as pointed out in the first paragraph of the above quote, there is no longer even the supposed (albeit extraordinarily weak) justification presented by the blockade and the demonstration. That’s why Trudeau’s government must invent a secret justification That Cannot Be Told. And that reason is expected to last a long time, because you just never know when those awful white supremacist Nazis will decide to demonstrate again.
It is impressive in its audacity. But for quite some time now the left in the West has realized that there is a distinct lack of courage and/or will and/or numbers on the part of its opponents in political life, and that dedication to the protection of liberty seems to have waned remarkably even in the general population. They feel an urgency to take advantage of this moment in time and this opportunity.
I read that the US version of the truck convoy is getting underway and will be driving on I40 then I44. The stops they list are in smaller towns.
It will be interesting to see the differences in the national as well as local tv coverage of the convoy as well as what happens in DC.
It will also be interesting to compare the journalistic treatment of our truckers with the hysterical and almost entirely moronic coverage of the business in Ukraine (with Democrats fulminating endlessly about their favorite villain, and Republicans mostly fulminating about the weakness of Biden, the latter being true but mostly important only because of his destructive domestic policies). No rational citizen of our moribund republic could possibly regard the actions of Putin as more dangerous to our precarious liberties than those of the tyrant to our north, as he is admired by the current illegitimate regime and by most of our corrupt media and may indeed be seen by them as someone to be emulated, especially in his punitive financial measures against his ideological opponents.

Don’t know. Maybe someone leaked that the Senate was going to cream him? /End speculation/ … though one wag comments that there’s been a significant run on the banks. Heh, guess Obama Light didn’t quite think that one through—if it’s in fact true; on the other hand Canadian banks may now be thoroughly compromised and distrusted, at least for the foreseeable future….
I was watching Viva Frei earlier today and the statement by a senator that sent him over the edge was ” We must keep the emergency in place out of concern for possible future demonstrations”

I’m interested in Neo’s take on this turn of events. It’s been reported by the Associated Press as well as the bought-and-paid-for Canadian media, so it’s not just a rumor.
Ha! So Trudeau made all of his party and those NDP people put their necks out and vote for this thing then two later rescind it.
Trudeau saw the writing on the wall or was persuaded of it and decided to act proactively. Thus demonstrating his ‘reasonableness’ and dismissing charges of being a dictator.
However, he continued to demonize the truckers and anyone who disagrees with him. Plus, remember DP Freeland’s assertion that they intend to make permanent some of the powers granted to Trudeau by his invocation of the Emergency Act.
Trudeau is consolidating regulatory power, when he next implements another ’emergency’ he’ll be nearly unassailable.

Most issues will present hardcore ideologues with at least a tiny fig leaf by which they can support their tribe’s abuses and pretend to continue to be moral and ethical people. It might require some pretty serious pretzels of logic and a good deal of deliberate ignorance, but at least a fig leaf remains for a claim of morality.
I’m having a hard time seeing it with this crackdown on the truckers. Any liberal supporting this has shed any pretense of a moral fig leaf. This is just brutal repression. Just smash mouth politics. Just standard totalitarian muscle.
