Walter Williams on liberty — 15 Comments

  1. Williams says: “we are moving toward totalitarianism.”

For once Canada is ahead of the USA! They’re already there.

  2. I have no idea whether a Constitutional Convention would work, but at this point there’s little to lose. Even our “conservative” justices (with the partial exceptions of Thomas and Alito) are unwilling to “interpret” the Constitution as written. As Williams pointed out in his excerpt from Madison’s Federalist, the Constitution has been inverted. Instead of the federal government’s powers being few and limited, and the states’ powers being many and indefinite, it is just the opposite and probably the majority of American citizens are OK with that. It all starts with the schools, where this inverted system is inculcated. So by the time people are out of high school, they’re pretty well indoctrinated.

  3. The finest demonstration of intelligence is when education, common sense and wisdom are combined. Walter Williams embody’s that paradigm. Thomas Sowell being the foremost one. That seems to be especially true of black conservative commentators. They speak simply yet say so much.

You wanna bet there’s little to lose?

The bit you’re missing is that for 200+ years Left has almost always everywhere been more determined, more Machiavellian, more focused and less LARPing than the Right.

Plus you’d go to a Constitutional Convention with them having all the best lawyers and talkers and megaphones? You think a few Sowells and Cruzes blathering away in session would bring about some kind of Restoration? They couldn’t hold the horses for a day let along get them back in the barn.

The *only* possible use for a CC would be to draw all the troublemakers like moths to a flame and then have a cadre of determined folk Helicopter them one-way and add biomass to the Gulf Stream.

  5. The Old Constitution is Over, Red Rover. You’re not the same people living under the same conditions and therefore whatever the hell makes you think it can work for the present Babylonian Empire?

Now I for one would be amused to see the American population attempt to trim itself Procrustes-like to fit itself back to those old scribblings (*)… but then I’m kind of a sicko like that. Best go with the Better Angels and make a new one. But that can only done by smashing the old and imposing a new one, too. You can’t just trim and cut a bit here and there. First need to Re-Tailor the Tailors… As opposed to your present Cutting and Stitching Solons who are for sale Wholesale.

    * Reverence for the thing just blinds everyone to the fact that it doesn’t work and can no longer work. All it has now is talismanic value to reassure the Too-Fearful-to-Act and bamboozle the Followers of Orders.

  6. Z:

Thanks again for sharing your vast, whatever, about
America. Not a citizen, not a resident, not an immigrant, just some dude who visited a few (?) times in the past. Now an authority.

Article V, Convention of States is in the Constitution for this purpose.

Anyone who heeds an apologist for despotism, e.g., Z, well, you deserve you chains.

  7. “But that can only done by smashing the old and imposing a new one, too.”

    Impressive!
    Inspiring!!
    Spoken like a TRUE revolutionary!!!
(Not sure, though, why we should stop at the Constitution. Why not include that blurb with all those dreary “Thou shalts”?—Seems to me if one is going to make a CLEAN slate, then one should go ALL THE WAY, no?)

Oh, and rename the months, and reconfigure the calendar, while we’re at it….

    …Oh, wait…

  8. }}} I have no idea whether a Constitutional Convention would work

Won’t work because the yammering left doesn’t have jobs.

They will block and obfuscate until the intelligent and rational people go home to get actual shit done, then pass all manner of nightmares that Robespierre would shake his head at.

Assume we live at the beginning of the French Revolution, you’ll not be far off.

  9. “Spoken like a TRUE revolutionary!!!”

Spoken Third-rate Bad Copy Cloned Arch *Reactionary* Thomas Carlyle (Sartor Resartus… geddit? geddit?), if you were paying attention 🙂

On my better days, I merely channel General Pinochet.
