Israelis are assisting in finding bodies in the collapsed Miami condo building
It’s a sorrowful task to find the bodies in the rubble of the collapsed Surfside condo, and not an easy one. A team of Israelis is helping. It’s an impressive operation:
“We analyzed the collapsed building and built a three-dimensional model of the structure. Our model will allow the Home Front Command delegation to further assist in the rescue efforts and navigate through the rubble more quickly and effectively,” said Lt. N. (full name withheld), Commander of the 9900 team on the ground in Florida.
IDF International Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amnon Shefler…[said] “The building was 40 years old, with 12 apartments on each floor, of different sizes.”…
The visual intelligence capabilities are enabling rescue forces to know who was in which room at the moment of the collapse, and to know how many people to search for in each apartment.
The team has generated 12-digit coordinates of the current location of each room, meaning they have an accurate mapping estimation with a margin of error of 1 meter (3.3 feet). The analysis also created a stage-by-stage simulation of the collapse, which assists in the tracking down process of the rooms and the victims.
“Based on that, they know exactly where to find the people. The rescue teams are working very accurately, going to specific places, and making efforts to be more accurate and efficient. We can say with a lot of sadness that more bodies were found because of that,” said Shefler…
“In addition, we are gathering information that will help us identify the people, such as what were they wearing, what did they look like, the artifacts next to them. This will help us to understand who we will reach,” [said another team member].
So they have a detailed map of the building, who lived where and with whom, and what furniture and other items might be near them. Of course, there’s also DNA, which is probably used for the final ID.
In related news, the part of the condo complex that didn’t collapse is going to be destroyed.
Not mentioned in the article, but I bet if anyone has the best tech for collapsed buildings, it’s the Israelis.
Hamas in Gaza has the best technology of collapsed “metros.” I heard that climate change was the cause of the Gaza metro collapses (maybe not)? 🙂
So many sad stories coming out of this building collapse. God bless the Israeli assistance.
Bless the Israelis for helping out. And yes, they are tech geniuses who have learned from their experiences at home.
Good Civil Defense Training. Win-Win. Kudos. It’s a thankless task at best of times.
Mapping / Modeling Software conceivably dual use. Sometimes you want to make parts of the rubble bounce twice. As the Irishman wearing two watches said: “To be sure, to be sure.”

No doubt a development for finding bodies in missile-destroyed buildings…
:-/
I appreciate their efforts, but it’s hard to see the point of having all this precise information right now.

The more data you have on building collapse debris, the better your models of how structures come down. They help people — which is good for the people concerned. They get free data — which is good for them, good for reducing Israeli civilian casualties… and perhaps less good for Muhammed bin Katyusha Aimer and his merry men doing a debrief in the basement when just their corner of it falls on their head. I’ll bet it also doesn’t hurt to be making friendly contact with divers foreigners in overseas buildings and works departments who collect and curate building and utilities plans, too. Never know when you might need to pull on a string or phone a man who knows a man.
Maybe you don’t read enough Daniel Silva 😛
Contrary to propaganda, Plucky Little Israel doesn’t suffer building collapses from missile strikes every day of the week. They’re quite rare — because Real Israel 2021 Edition is the thousand pound techno gorilla and does most of the collapsing in the neighbourhood. But you need to train your Civil Defense teams to handle stuff they don’t see on a regular basis just in case. It’s only prudent. So send them off here and there and gain some good will while you’re doing it.
Imagine Russia or China just sent a bunch of specialists to dig a bunch of people out of a collapsed building while doing all kinds of tricky stuff with laptops and tech gear in the rubble and then extrapolate the thinking process. You’d thank them politely, say nice grateful things, present them with a commemorative plaque, take a bunch of happy group photos, and bug and surveill the hell out of them. Just as you should do with help from the Promised Land of Jonathan Pollard. Or. Any. Other. Country.
What land was Kim Philby from again?
Unfortunately, the animals left behind were killed when they demolished the rest of the building. https://miami.cbslocal.com/2021/07/03/surfside-pet-owners-impending-demolition/
I suspect the assistance that Israel offered to send so quickly was due to the special circumstances of this particular incident, i.e.:
– The relatively high number of Jews (in particular observant Jews, together with a number of Israeli citizens) who inhabited the collapsed portion of the building, and
– The religious injunction to bury the dead as quickly as possible.
Not that Israel would not offer to assist in other cases—they have and they will continue to do so—and in several different countries, as well (e.g., Turkey—well, once upon a time—and Haiti, speaking of which the number of Jews in Haiti is not all that significant—unless some on this blog know more about this than I do, which is entirely possible…). I’m just saying that this Miami incident happens to be a special case…
FWIW….
(As for the purportedly sinister aspect of such “altruism”, well, OK sure…but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar….)
