On the COVID vaccine and beyond — 43 Comments

  1. So, my mom is in the hospital (not COVID or anything like it) and my sister was with her in ER and they asked about vaccination and my mom and sister said they had both been fully vaccinated and the nurse said she had too but she will never get another one because it’s all pointless because nothing changes.

They are going to start haranguing people again in the fall to get another one but it is going to be tougher to convince people because the incentives are so few.

An example: here in WA the Major League Baseball team announced they are going to have special vaccinated sections at the stadium with special entrances and all (Segregration Today! Segregation Tomorrow! Segregation Forever! Woo Hoo!!!!) but the kicker is these fully vaccinated people will have to all where masks. Outside. With other vaccinated people.

  2. I fully expect that at least in the blue states, the masks will NEVER come off. It’s too much of a virtue signal for many people, and the pols love to have one last bit of control over people. Funny, though, here in CT the only time I wear a mask is in stores that require it. I understand they have both liability and the state government breathing down their necks. Outside of that, except for the fruitcakes wearing their masks alone in their cars, not seeing many people wearing them except when required. We are having major renovations done and have had many contractors and workers over the past 3 weeks here at our house. No one came wearing a mask, or asked if we wanted them to wear one. However, these blue collar types tend to have a different attitude from the rest.

  3. “But basically, why should I care what she does, except for concern for her health? ”

the only theoretical problem would be that she as a vector can harbor and allow mutations into newer more virulent varieties to occur

  4. avi:

If most people are immune, it is highly unlikely that she’ll ever catch COVID in the first place, much less be a vector for some strange strain of it.

At a certain point we either live in a police state or we don’t. Liberty involves certain risks, but especially if the risk is low I’ll take it over totalitarianism any day.

  5. Yeah, I’m beginning to conclude that a new annual vaccine will be needed each year. Like the flu.

I’m not even going to get this one.
There is something menacing and alarming about how forcefully these shills are selling the “you MUST get a vaccine”. On my local NextDoor there is a thread on which most of the people are advocating vaccinating pregnant women. These is troubling, to say the least.

“Vaccines r safe no steps were missed while creating these vaccines”
    Uh huh.

“I am practicing as a nurse practitioner in OB/GYN and am also volunteering as a vaccinator.
In our office, we’ve had over 120 pregnant moms receive the vaccines, both Pfizer and Moderna. None, have had any issues and of the ones who have delivered, 100% of the babies were fine. I have also personally supervised over 8000 people be vaccinated and again no issues. I hope this helps. I’m talking about vaccines on NBC again this week:
    https://www.nbclosangeles.com/california-live/5-things-to-know-about-the-covid-vaccine/2515931/
Is a medical professional really comfortable being this much of a shill?

  6. physicsguy,

That’s pretty much how it is in WA too. I’ve taken to wearing the mask below my nose most of the time in stores and I haven’t had one comment.

Of the many, many sad and disheartening things from the last year plus I think the lack of any pushback from the citizenry is at the top of the list. Not that surprising I guess and I think a lot has to do with the cash payoffs from the gov’t so to many people and not just the professional class it hasn’t really been that bad.

Also, purely anecdotal but I have found some of the strongest pushback to forcing vaccinations are from people in healthcare. Not necessarily out of fear of the vaccines but I think they have seen enough real world ‘cases’ over the last year as to have a better understanding of the true risk to most.

  7. My unserious and semi joking theory about why the democrats shills are so adamant in forcing everyone to take the vaccine even for the conservatives they hated so much (seriously don’t for a second try to convince me that conservatives’ health is of their concern, if there is a button when pushed can wipe out all conservatives and trump supporters in an instant no democrat would hesitate to press it immediately) is that if in a very unlikely scenario that the vaccine does come with serious side effects they didn’t have to take the fall alone and given a chance the conservatives who didn’t vaccinated to make fun of them, the same reasoning for why China covered up the virus to try to spread it as wide as they could, no one want to get hurt alone and be humiliated with.

  9. Today: naked-faced dude of a certain age (moi) walking beneath Valley Forge’s monument to the Continental Army and all they endured during the winter of 1777-78. Splendid spring morn. Dead ahead, the big high flag billowing theatrically. No one else there amid that hallowed expanse of green rolling fields…till a young family happens by — mom, dad, one toddler, one carriaged tot — pausing before the names of the generals engraved in the limestone. Masked, all four of them. I raised my shillelegh to them in hello, but they didn’t appear to notice.

Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to say.

  10. The CEO of Norwegian Cruise Lines went off on the CDC and there ridiculous guidance for cruises calling them ‘absurd’. He says they may not be able to sail from US ports until September.

The CDC is an absolute joke. There eviction order did get shot down by a judge yesterday though. Yes the CDC was issuing eviction bans somehow.

  11. The last year and a quarter has seen some major scientific advances come crashing into the public and political consciousnesses. Back in March 2020, I was relatively certain that there would be a number of such advances that would blunt much of the pain of the epidemic. Some of that happened, but the political angle has been atrocious.

I’ve just recently begun to wonder if in some pot smoke filled rooms, top Dem operatives assessed the public mood in Mar. 2020 and thought, “Hey, these morons want to wear useless masks. Let’s have Zuck slip a bunch of moral posturing commentary into Facebook about how I protect my neighbor, with a mask, and she protects me. Maybe it’ll catch fire and be great misdirection against the real issues of the day.”

I’m a big fan of the mRNA vaccines and am sad to see that the rate of vaccination in the U.S. has been decreasing for 2 or 3 weeks now. I think we’ll get to 50% adult vaccination fairly soon, but I’d rather see 65 to 70% in the next several months. Fauci’s 90% is a crap number of course.

One of the obvious problems is that the greater public sees this as the decision to get “the vaccine.” You should ask, “Should I get a vaccine, and if so, which one?”

It’s not quite clear to me why the Reason author thinks that the next time we have an epidemic, the mRNA vaccines will pop out in a few months. The thing he mentions that could speed things up greatly, is human challenge trials.

Really? Sign me up to be infected with the raw disease. You see, we have this new Ebola vaccine. Unfortunately, we don’t know what the correct challenge inoculation dosage is, so you will be a member of the unvaccinated control group.

If someone conducted human challenge COVID trials now, there would be a variety of effective treatments available for those challengers who got quite sick. But none of those existed in the early days.

Speaking of the atrocious and appalling, I thought it was well established that deficiencies in vitamin D and zinc were strongly correlated with very sick COVID-19 patients. And yet we have this,

  12. Physicsguy and I are both based in CT for the time being. He will know exactly where the following male Karen (some people call them Chads) is coming from; the guy obviously hopes the mask mandate will never end. This screed was posted on my NextDoor this morning:

I wanted to share with the community and warn them of an issue I’ve had with Planet Fitness and their unwillingness to help.

After complaining multiple times over several weeks about members not wearing masks, the issue was never addressed. [Dangling participle here; it’s not the issue that was complaining] One member in particular continued to no [sic] wear a mask despite being spoken to several times. In anger, this man called me a [homophobic, according to the writer] slur. This was in the middle of April.

Planet Fitness has done nothing. This member is still allowed in the gym and continues to not wear a mask. Is there anyone who can provide guidance or support? I’d really appreciate it! Thank you!!

Two updates: 1) The offending “member” turned out to be a personal trainer employed by Planet Fitness; 2) Planet Fitness canceled “Chad’s” membership this afternoon.

As for the ongoing panic porn in these parts: After the initial lockdown last year, the supermarket where I shop blessedly discontinued its every-5-minute PSAs about the importance of masks, social distancing, having only one family member in the store, and following the directional arrows on the floors. For some reason the announcements started up again about three weeks ago; I have no idea why. I detest the syrupy goo-goo vocal tone of these announcements, which end with “Thank you for being cooperative, and helping to keep everyone in our stores SAFE!” I’ve started to talk back by telling The Voice to shut up– this week, another shopper whispered “Good for you!” Maybe there is hope after all.

  13. I can only stand in awe at the courage of those who have volunteered to participate in an unprecedented medical experiment involving an invasive new methodology. One in which any serious side effects that might manifest in a few years are completely unknown. All to avoid a virus with a 99%+ survival rate.

Incidentally, the vaccines may not confer immunity. “In the last few weeks, states across the U.S. have reported cases of COVID-19 infection among fully vaccinated people…”

“By January 13, 2020—only two days after the Chinese researchers shared the genetic sequence of the COVID-19 virus and before most Americans had heard of the disease—the biotech company Moderna had devised the formula for its vaccine.”

Only two days… nothing to see there folks, move along now.

  14. Before the pandemic, I’d never even heard of mRNA vaccines. Since their development, I’ve read quite a bit of the nonspecialist literature.

As far as I’m concerned, these vaccines are the only good thing to come out of the pandemic. Nobel Prizes are in order.

  15. TommyJay:

I would wager that the vaccination rates in the US are much higher than that in people over 50 and definitely in people over 60. Younger people don’t care as much for the simple reason that their risk of serious illness from COVID is very low.

  16. @GB:

“Only two days… nothing to see there folks, move along now.”

I’m as much a contrarian as anyone posting here 🙂

But I don’t necessarily see *vaccine* conspiracies this early in the Covid Game. Much of high-end pharmacology today is applied computational science. Once they had the genome data (comes in a standard format used by everyone) — you just bung that in your super duper computational toolchain and cobble a fix for it out of existing bits and pieces and technologies you own or have rights to. No biggie to pull a quick rabbit out of the hat whether it’s a molecule or a bit of ‘code’ (latter more like the case here).

So I see nothing special about rolling out a huge computational job on AWS and grinding out an ‘Answer’ in 2 days. Not like there weren’t Rivers of Gold in play for first movers.

Plus it’s Business. Likely they Lied at least a little. Want to bet they didn’t revise and refine their 2 day wonder a bit before production?

The trick is then being able to manufacture and distribute the stuff correctly, safely, and at scale, plus grinding and grafting through all the testing and legal stuff.

Full Disclosure: I went and got both doses of the Pfizer Biontech vaccine. Would have preferred not to as like idea of other people being guinea pigs. But for bunch of political and logistical reasons if I’d waited, might have eventually been forced into getting the Sinovac product with no Biontech option available then — no thanks.

  17. One of my daughters, aged 40, got the vaccination because she has pre-existing conditions which put her at risk. Her husband got the shots, too. Our other daughter, 38, is probably not going to get the shots unless her employer insists. She is thin, healthy, and more likely to have real problems with the shots than from COVID. We can continue to see her because WE’VE been vaccinated, since we’re the ones at risk.

Since our age range is now one giant experimental cohort, we shall see within a year or two if there are any long-term problems with the mRNA shots. If not, then this is indeed an exciting advance in vaccine technology. Fingers crossed.

  18. I stopped wearing a mask about a month ago. I have had both shots. Only had pushback from two places. One ask if I had a mask, yes I have one but have been vaccinated. I ask her what she will do since I did not put a mask on. Her response was basically we will do nothing and have a nice day. The other place was a restaurant. Have to put it on because the CDC says I have too then walk ten feet to table and take mask off. What stupidity.
Not wearing a mask is the only way I can protest this happy horse shit.

  19. Our governor (Cooper, D) says that he’s not going to lift any more restrictions until two-thirds of North Carolinians are vaccinated. This is insane. We’re at about 42% vaccinated now, heavily weighted towards older people. Statistics say confirmed cases are about 10%. Based on multiple reports and estimates I’ve read, this means probably at least three times as many people have been infected and have recovered, or were never sick at all. That would take us to perhaps 30% naturally immune because of having had the virus. We’re likely at 70% overall, therefore, and maybe more. Cases and deaths are dropping precipitously. It’s over as a public health crisis.

  20. @Kate:

“It’s over as a public health crisis.”

You’ll know the Powers that Be believe its over when they open up the Indian Floodgates to remedy that fact 😛

  21. We’re going to hear all kinds of bad things about longer term Vaccine effects, but it’s important to keep a sense of proportion:

    1) Keeping us hyped up in a panic state is what ‘They’ want.

    2) There is immense amount of funding available, so researchers *will* find problems. They’re literally being paid to do so. This is a once-in-a-lifetime career and status jump opportunity for many otherwise would be obscure toilers in the salt mines.

    3) We don’t need no Stinking Three. Also Caitlyn Jenner is a freak.

  22. “I can only stand in awe at the courage of those …” blah, blah, blah. Such profundity. Another was wont to say “I saw something nasty in the woodshed.” Was it a masked fiend with a needle?

Personal choices made by individuals weighing their risks and the perceived benefits. Not to say that you are cowardly for not taking a vaccination, your choice.

  23. Sinovac may be as reliable as the CCP PPE and CCP test kits. “What, me worry?”

  24. Interesting perspective and responses. My wife, sister in-law, mother in-law and parents have all been vaccinated. I’m on the fence personally due to the lack of any knowledge about long-term potential impacts and because I exercise, eat well and am pretty fit for a 53 year old. I’m also hesitant to get my sons vaccinated due to the lack of long-term results and their low risk profile.

There are still things being discovered about this virus such as the fact that the spike protein itself causes damage(https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCRESAHA.121.318902) – one of the key pieces of the available vaccines. I hope I am wrong and this turns out to be safe but I will definitely be a late adopter.

  25. The current CDC vaccination numbers are:
Partially vaccinated 149,462,265, Fully vaccinated 108,926,627.
    % of Total Population: 45% and 32.8%

Good point Neo. What percentage of mid-aged and older are vaccinated? Oh wait,

Population 65 Years of Age and over
    45,406,761 Partial, 38,398,045 Fully
% of Population 65 Years of Age and over
    83% and 70.2%

Well I’d like to see the over 40 year-old numbers, but that is not too shabby.
    _____

Burton M., I think it is very smart to wait a bit to see what shakes out. If they will tell us the facts.

Based on my viewing MedCram videos produced by the fabulous Dr. Seheult, yes the spike proteins, in sufficient quantity, in your bloodstream is very dangerous. Of course, with the current U.S. vaccines, the spike proteins are not supposed to be in your bloodstream in any significant quantities.

I used to think that the Novavax vaccine would be the safest because they don’t do any genetic manipulation. They just inject the spike proteins (packaged I supposed) into your muscle. But what if nurse hits a small blood vessel and floods your bloodstream? It could be the worst vaccine. But I’m just guessing, and it’s not available yet as far as I know.
    _____

I hate to speak ill of any vaccine at this point, so don’t take my word for the following without doing your own research, but … My reading from a week or two ago suggests that the Danish gov. has done the calculation that indicates that the AstraZeneca vaccine flunks the benefit/danger test for women aged 18 to X. I think X is 30 or 35, but I’ve forgotten the exact number.

At first I didn’t believe that Danish determination, partly because the clotting/bleeding issue only affected 1 or 2 per million. But within the above sex/age group the side effect occurrence rises to 10 or more per million, and the severe downside to contracting COVID is also rare.

I don’t know how certain the medical community is, but the AstraZeneca vaccine severe side effect is now called VITT, or Vaccine-induced Immunity Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia which causes both clotting and low platelet bleeds.

  26. Not vaccinated; not planning to any time soon. I stopped with the annual flu shot years ago as I rarely got the flu (I mean before getting the annual shot); but, when I did get the annual flu shot I would be sick for days afterwards. Health care professionals always tried to reassure me by saying “don’t worry, it isn’t the flu.” I know that and don’t care – I would still be sick with flu-like symptoms for 3-5 days after the shot.

Given how sick I get from the annual flu shot (yes, I know it really isn’t accurate to say that since it has been 25 years – it might not affect me the same any more) I just don’t want to risk it with a shot that really isn’t as tested in the real world as other shots have been.

Does this make me an anti-vaxxer?

  27. Do the people who scream most about everyone needing vaccination even realize there are likely gain of function experiments going on now which may conjure up the next pandemic? These are the people who tend to close their ears and claim it is just conspiracy to point out that gain of function experiments were being done in Wuhan, in the first place.

  28. They will not tell us the facts even if they discover any harmful long term effects with it, the blow back would be massive. we still haven’t had one healthy baby conceived and birthed after parents were fully vaccinated, i’ll wait and see.

  29. never in the history of mankind a medication would be administered to the population at this scale this fast, even if the chances are extremely extremely low, the whole human race would be completely wiped out if in fact that the vaccine does come with deadly side effects, isn’t it wiser to leave a portion of the population unvaccinated so in the worst case scenario you have a portion unaffected by the effects so they can continue the race?

  30. The chinese are not taking mRNA vaccines, you think they are stupid? if mRNA wipes out the west, they win.

  31. The science says we can return to normal, it’s the politicians that are resisting. Chads and Karens are just useful idiots.

My wife and I went out for a walk through the woods to the beach last Sunday. This was a week, maybe more, after the governor had lifted the mask in public requirement. We did not have masks on or in our possession. A few of the people we came across did have masks on. I may be paranoid but I think they gave us the stink eye. 😉

Things will be back to normal when we behave like normal.

  32. Chads and Karens are just useful idiots.

We have a shirt-tail relative who has been a complete kook for the better part of a year. He was in a rage after it was decided that public schoolteachers in his district would be expected to return to work. His 16 year old daughter visits us seven months ago and I have to explain to her that she is in no danger of death from this ailment, something her father’s daily rants have obscured from her.

That having been said, neither one of them were retailing horror film plots in comboxes, something people have been doing in at least two places I frequent. There are addled-pated people on all sides of every question.

What gets me is the nonsense emanating from public health officialdom, Drs. Fauci and Szilagyi in particular.

  33. So can anyone tell me if Biden and the WTO can actually cancel the Pfizer and Modena vaccine patents? Sounds illegal, or I hope it is.

  34. I’ll make you a deal. IF, a year from now we are still in lock-down mode AND people are legitimately becoming “sick” (not just testing positive) AND if longer range studies have established no significant adverse side effects, I’ll consider taking a non-mRNA vaccine. Consider it, not actually take it unless things are dire. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to eat properly, supplement with C, D, zinc, astragalus and echinacea and exercise strenuously daily. I am 71 years old and this regimen has kept me and my 72 year old wife free of infectious diseases of every sort, despite exposure to numerous positive diagnosed individuals in the family, along with hospital visits for unrelated issues. I also traveled by air for a ski vacation with my grandsons, where we were undoubtedly exposed, but none of us got sick.

  35. Tommy Jay:
“I’m from the government and I’m here to help” is 95% BS, dating back probably to the FDR era (i.e. almost 100 years ago).
    >>>>>>>>
” You wrote, “I don’t know how certain the medical community is, but the AstraZeneca vaccine severe side effect is now called VITT, or Vaccine-induced Immunity Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia which causes both clotting and low platelet bleeds.”
And that the Danish government in its infinite wisdom has determined that the therapeutic ratio of the Astra-Zeneca vaccine is unfavorable in women aged 18 to X (ca. 30).

VITT remains extremely rare, even at the likely falsely high incidence of 10 cases per million. But it is now associated with a vaccine as its cause (by government edict?). In the pre-COVID era, thrombotic thrombocytopenia was a very rare and deadly disease with “triggers” in some cases like lupus, but unknown causes in many. Incidence is 10 per million. Sound similar? Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Let me remind you the Sabin oral polio vaccine caused clinical paralytic polio in 3 per million doses. Polio threatened all comers, but especially the young. My brother caught it at age 18 months and has never been able tor run, only hobble on his shorter leg. But everyone scrambled for the Sabin vaccine, which government in its more sane, less tyrannical days did not prevent.

In contrast, COVID is a minuscule trivial threat to the young (despite teachers’ unions refusal to teach in vivo), which “young” includes adults in middle age.

I met an architect yesterday who told me the cost of home-building materials like lumber and plywood had gone up 500 to 1000% because of COVID shutdowns of production sites, and pent-up demand. Yep, one sheet of plywood is now $49 and lumber yards are being profit-squeezed because they cannot fully pass these high costs on to builders.

  36. I’ve read (I have no personal knowledge of any of this) that the reason mRNA “vaccines” came on so quickly was that they have been experimenting with this type of “vaccines” for a decade or two. The problem has been that during animal trials, the side effects have been so extreme in a significant fraction of the “vaccinated”, that they could not get permission to move to human trials.

  37. Nobel Prize for the Trump Vax! Greatest 21st C scientific accomplishment.

That’s because Man of the People, Ben Shapiro on the occasion of making the first visit in his life to a place frequented by actual Dirt People spotted an opportunity to corner the lumber market:

I’ve gotta say he doesn’t look totally simpatico with that item of semi-processed bio-cellulose matter.

  40. Earl’s claims might be buried somewhere in one of these stories from the top of the Search stack, but I haven’t assessed them all yet.
I sometimes feel sympathy with the Misinformation Protection Brigade; I just don’t think they are the ones who should be entrusted with the mission – or that anyone should be, in fact.
Buck up, skippy, and clean your own room.

However, it might be worth looking into further, although it’s too late for those of us that are already vaxxed.

    December 2020
    EVIDENCE SUMMARY
There are no specific guidelines for use of messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines or contraindications to mRNA vaccines.
No large trials of any mRNA vaccine have been completed yet.
The only evidence on safety of mRNA vaccines comes from small phase I and phase II trials of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, with
follow-up typically less than two months.
Systemic adverse events such as fatigue, muscle aches, headache, and chills are common.
Severe systemic adverse events were reported by 5 to 10 percent of trial subjects.
Localized adverse events such as pain at the injection side are common.
Both systemic and local adverse events usually are resolved within one or two days.
The rate and severity of adverse events appears to be higher for the second dose of vaccine than for the first.
Higher vaccine doses appear to increase the rate and severity of adverse events.
Larger trials of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are in progress, with results expected in mid-2021.
There is not sufficient evidence to support any conclusions on the comparative safety of different mRNA vaccines.
Direct evidence on the comparative safety of mRNA vaccines and other vaccines is lacking.

A draft is not a final conclusion; they may have thrown in every possible consequence so as to look at what doesn’t actually happen. It’s a LOOONNNG list.
    https://sandrarose.com/2020/12/fda-releases-list-of-mrna-vaccine-side-effects/

The terrifying list looks like something out of a horror movie script. The scariest side effect (other than death) is disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).

In my 30+ years as a registered nurse I’ve only witnessed two patients suffering from DIC. Both patients died within hours.
The following is a draft of possible adverse reactions to the mRNA vaccine.

These two are working in sync, which doesn’t mean they are wrong, nor that the scary posts necessarily are.

Pfizer and Moderna did not skip animal trials
By BEATRICE DUPUY November 25, 2020
CLAIM: The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are mRNAs vaccines that skipped animal trials because using mRNA vaccines on animals triggers dangerous inflammation.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. Pfizer and Moderna did not skip animal trials when testing their COVID-19 vaccines.

THE FACTS: As the race to authorize the use of COVID-19 vaccines continues, posts online are spreading misinformation about vaccine trials.
