Candace Owens goes full Der Stürmer
I have a feeling – or is it a hope? – that Candace Owens’ recent spewings may alienate even some of her real followers (as opposed to the bots). The context was that Ben Shapiro called her out for her hateful mendacity, at a recent TPUSA event, and this was her response.
Why do I highlight this? It’s disturbing to watch, but this woman does have influence on many people who celebrate her (hard to say how many because her audience is so bot-heavy). In this most recent clip, she’s also very obviously trying to incite a race war of black people against Jews:
Now that you’ve digested that, this is the book she’s holding up:
Der Talmudjude, by anti-Jewish German Catholic theologian August Rohling, claimed that the Talmud commanded Jews to steal, lie, cheat, and kill Christians.
Rohling had repeatedly spread the libel that Jews consumed human blood in murder rituals. The theologian’s scholarship was cast into doubt during a failed libel suit against one of his detractors, but Der Talmudjude has remained a mainstay of antisemitic texts.
The book was written in 1871 and was a Nazi favorite:
In addition there have been fabricated interpretations such as the 19th-century antisemitic book “The Talmudic Jew” by German Catholic theologian August Rohling, a popular text with the anti-Jewish newspaper Der Stürmer in the years leading up to the Holocaust and the rise of the Third Reich.
More here:
And there it was, one of the digital right’s best-known figures, a woman with more than five million YouTube subscribers, hawking a book full of anti-Semitic lies. Rohling was a German Catholic theologian. He was an infamous Jew-hater. The Talmudic Jew depicts the Talmud as a ‘repository of anti-Christian hatred’ and a ‘manual for swindling Gentiles’, says Hussein Aboubakr Mansour. And of course it’s fraudulent, Mansour writes. It relies on ‘medieval anti-Jewish polemics and out-of-context quotations’.
Rohling later wrote a hateful pamphlet on the ‘human sacrifices’ carried out by rabbis. The Jews do indeed engage in the ritual murder of Christian children, he wrote. It was a pseudo-academic revival of the medieval blood libel. And it helped to whip up Jewphobic animus across Germany and beyond. That a 21st-century right-winger is citing this Jew-hater – worse, actively promoting his work – is extraordinary.
Much more here:
Perhaps no book has excited the intrigue of antisemites quite like the Talmud and which became its own self-contained myth. Just the mention of “the Talmud” is bound to conjure up worlds. It is difficult to say exactly why. Its sheer inaccessibility, certainly—the alien script running right to left like a mirror of proper reading. To European eyes it has always carried the aura of the esoteric, something halfway between scripture and spellbook. The very look of it suggests secrets. Perhaps that Jews possessed a textual tradition beyond the Bible, an “oral law” whispered down through generations and only later committed to writing, was itself suspect: what were they hiding? What had they added?
But the fantasy of the Talmud has always exceeded the Talmud itself. As a matter of fact, the real Talmud is a big disappointment compared to the muscular, mythological one; we would do better to make the distinction between the Talmud of reality and that of myth. One opens the former expecting occult mysteries and finds rabbis arguing about liability for damages caused by an ox. The gap between the myth and the text is so vast that one suspects the myth requires the text to remain unread. Rohling understood this, perhaps instinctively: his readers would never check.
Rohling claimed expertise in rabbinical literature that he did not have. His interpretations of Hebrew texts were dilettantish at best, fraudulent at worst. He relied heavily on medieval anti-Jewish polemics and on out-of-context quotations ripped from the vast sea of Talmudic disputation. The truth is, he likely never actually read the Talmud.
The Talmud is not a catechism; it is a record of centuries of legal debate among rabbis, filled with minority opinions, hypothetical arguments, and positions that were never adopted as normative practice. It is the definition of pedantry, written primarily in Aramaic, a language Rohling could not read, with Hebrew interspersed, in a terse and allusive style that presupposes familiarity with an entire tradition of commentary. It dwells, for pages—volumes, really—on the most mundane and technical details of daily life: the proper handling of food, the timing of prayers, the laws governing agricultural cycles, rules for feasts and holidays, the conditions under which an egg laid on a festival day may or may not be eaten, if and how to carry things on the Sabbath in what kind of vessel. It endlessly argues over these riveting and exhilarating questions. So exciting to read it should really come with a heart rate monitor. To extract from this a simple set of commands—”Jews must swindle Christians”—is not to misread the Talmud; it is to have never encountered it at all. It is to have read about it in other books written by other people who also never read it, which is likely what Rohling did.
But I noticed this sort of Jew-hatred online long long ago, at least as long as I’ve been blogging. There’s been a huge genre of web-based propaganda about the Talmud and how Jews are evil and their evil is expressed in the Talmud, and it’s probably based on books such as Rohling’s. I am relatively sure these falsehoods have been spread worldwide on the internet long before Owens got into the act, although she’s certainly doing her bit to spread the venomous stuff still further.

She has become the arrogant condescending vile epitome of that which she rales against: a hateful lying racist. (Wish someone who has influence would publicly confirm that , yes, blacks can be racist. Even if they marry a (very rich) white man. Unfounded hate based on people’s ethnicity or skin color or religion is racism. And boy is she a walking, talking prime example! And most significantly, she is unbelievably dangerous given her influence — which ironically began with her association with Charlie Kirk and is in large part a direct result of HIS success and his relatable message – which is a far cry from what she now spews. And Maybe having married the son of a billionaire makes her feel unassailable. I can’t believe I once thought her to be clever, attractive and articulate. This video just consolidates my revised opinion that she is a monster.
I’m pretty sure Candace Owen is looking for the Alex Jones segment of the market. I don’t know how much antisemitism Alex Jones ever personally engaged in, but definitely a chunk of his audience was in the market for it.
I don’t know how genuine any of Owen’s previous public personae were, nor how genuine this one is, but the common theme is separating the credulous from the contents of their wallets.
Plenty of organizations on the Left, like the SPLC and ADL, will profit from her as well. There’s always someone willing to act the Goldstein role, the Left doesn’t always have to invent them.
Painting Owens as dangerous and threatening is of course exactly what she is looking for, and exactly what will confirm her audience in their beliefs. (Many of them seem convinced that Erika Kirk was meeting her to have her done away with.) I do think it’s better to ignore such people.
Can’t ignore Evil.

Excellent thoughts as usual Niketas Choniates.

I once loved Candace Owens. That was then.
Now, I have no absolutely use for her (and that’s putting it far too mildly).
What in blazes changed?? — and so radically.
I got through about thirty seconds of the Owen link and had to stop lest the nausea overwhelm me. The ignorance, lies, and pure hatred are more than sensible people should swallow for one second.
When she said that the Talmud teaches enslavement of black people, obviously she never heard about the Ethiopian Jews who were airlifted into Israel. They are black of the East African type, in appearance a lot like Ilhan Omar, for instance.
Owen has become evil.
There’s lots of clicks and presumably good money for conservatives who turn on Trump.
I got through about thirty seconds of the Owen link and had to stop lest the nausea overwhelm me.
Decent people rightfully recoil from such things. Watching it requires an act of will.
About thirty seconds was all it took to see what an evil monster she has become.
I couldn’t bear to even give it a shot.
Given that she’s married to an extremely wealthy white British man, she doesn’t need the money and I don’t think that’s what she’s after. She’s after power and influence.
I strongly doubt that very many American Jews know very much about the Talmud and that would include all the ones with wealth, power, and influence.
Is there a thing about being so bad that more prospects are turned away than are lured in?
If she’s preaching to the choir, it’s not particularly important. They’d believe anything including today’s AI anti-semite assignment.
Antisemitism is common among blacks. I daresay that many if not most blacks are antisemitic or have negative feelings toward Jews and Israel. Growing up in a mixed-race environment, attending a mixed race high school (with a substantial number of black and Jewish students), and playing sports with black teammates, I saw many instances of black antisemitism made manifest. It is a curious phenomenon and it has been around for a long time, yet even today it is rarely discussed — or admitted. Jewish leftists and liberals seem to turn a blind eye to it.
I suspect I’m getting boring by saying this…but…it will be sad/funny when Jews discover their safe spaces are Baptist churches and NASCAR events. Plus SEC universities.
The pathologies on display (for quite some time now, alas), are as fascinating as they are alarming.
…Anyway, something to lift one’s spirits…in a manner of speaking…

Some of us already have. And it is heartfelt appreciated.
The people in America who actually have the power to meaningfully harm American Jews, or damage the interests of Israel, are the leftists who are embedded at all levels of our public and private institutions.
Probably wiser to focus on the Herculanean task of recapturing those institutions rather than be distracted by internet loudmouths.
None of the professional protesters against Israel at universities and in blue cities are there because of Tucker Carlson or Candace Owen, and those people were not coddled and indulged by administrators and government officials at the behest of Tucker Carlson or Candace Owen.
Oh how awesome, nobody else can recognize root causes. So pay no attention to Candace or Tucker?
Does anyone care as much as Candace Owens cares about the Macron marriage? What is her fascination with Mrs Macron? I don’t care if she’s trans. Who would?
Thanks nik for telling me what kinds of antisemitism I’m allowed to criticize.
AppleBetty. I live in a normal midwestern town. If I wore a tee shirt saying “I stand with Israel” into one of them, I’d be welcomed. In another, the prosecutor would say I “was looking for a fight”.
There are more of the first type and fewer of the second south of the Ohio River.
We’ll leave the denom to your guessing.
I choose to ignore Candace Owen. This rant (which I could only watch a few seconds of) illustrates why. I recommend a lot of others ignore her, and Tucker Carlson. You life will be better for it.

“Antisemitism is common among blacks.”
From your experience, is there any reason to consider this an attempt by blacks to be or stay at least one step higher on the “oppression” ladder or totem pole?
I also wonder if slaves or free blacks were exposed to the doctrines of Christianity, they might have been fed an anti deicide version early on or often, and thus “grew up” with an anti-Jewish orientation? I suppose this could apply in America, Africa, and elsewhere if/when Christianity was promoted in a malformed way.
I suspect, or hope, that neither of these ideas can be pushed too far, even if valid in selected cases/ situations. But Richard Dawkins has explained that cultural memes do evolve or survive based on their acceptance over time.
I’ve actually read most of a book called “The Babylonian Talmud” (some years ago).
It is quite interesting, if you enjoy reading legal case studies in a Bar Review or ABA journal.
As Neo says, it it NOT what Owens is peddling.
I am a Christian who knows something about The Talmud. It is a very misunderstood book, or rather, library of books, compiled over ages from a myriad of sources, often contradictory because of its compilation of rabbis debating one another over arcane interpretations of Jewish law and customs. It does contain inflammatory references to “yeshu” which are usually (and probably correctly) interpreted as referring to Jesus, so there is a basis to see it as containing anti-Christian polemics. It also contains a million times more content having nothing to do with Jesus, “yeshu” or anything having to do with Christianity, as one would expect from a compilation of Jewish rabbis discussing and debating what it means to be “Jewish” after the destruction of Judaism’s central place of worship and the entire fabric of Mosaic Judaism. I personally don’t get too upset about it; it doesn’t concern me, nor does it diminish my Christianity. Unfortunately, it does provide fodder for Jew haters of all stripes to pick and choose something within it that they can get lathered up about. And that perfectly describes the execrable Candace Owens and those who seek to elevate her to a position of prominence. She is no more an orthodox Christian than was that other notorious Jew hater, A.H. Like him, she uses “Christianity” to attack her opponents, instead of reflecting on how to live out the teachings of Jesus in her own life.
I think negative comments about the Jewish authorities who persecuted early Jewish followers of Yeshua in the Christian scriptures, and negative comments in the Talmud against Jewish followers of Yeshua (whom they viewed as heretics) should be placed in historical context and not extended to all Jews or all Christians for all time. And, as pointed out here, Candace Owens’ demented comments about the Talmud are completely false.
I’m sorry, but Netanyahu is doing with bombs what Hitler did with concentration camps. The ethnic cleansing of Gaza at the hands of Bibi and the IDF is absolutely abhorrent. October 7th occurred at the perfect time for Netanyahu. He was facing MAJOR public backlash for changing the Judiciary and then the most monitored country in the world, a country no bigger than the state of New Jersey, didn’t see the Hamas attack coming??? It took the IDF HOW LONG to respond? I’m not saying there was a stand down order given but without that terrorist attack, Gaza is still intact. But because of it, Gaza now resembles the aftermath of a game of Jenga played by Michael J. Fox and Alan Alda.
