There was a great documentary series entitled “How the states got their shape.” The US states. West Virginia was separated from Virginia because of the mountains, and because dynamite blasting through ridges hadn’t become common yet when the boundaries were finalized. Travel between the two was quite difficult then.
My map tells me the Madagascar island is approx. 985 mi. long.
Ate lunch yesterday with an older couple I was doing some work for. Turned out that the lady had spent part of her childhood in POW camps in the Philippines. Her parents were American Episcopalian Missionaries there when the Japanese took over in WW2. She still has a doll her mother made for her from cloth she scraped together in the camp(s) .
