One of these things is not like the other: Russiagate, Epstein letter — 31 Comments

  1. Taibbi has become a go-to for me to try to figure out what a suddenly-hot story signifies. America This Week is probably my favorite podcast and I wish he and Kirn could do it every day.

    He’s pretty actively anti-Trump, but he’s also honest about attempts to paint Trump as a fascist demon – and, having cut his teeth on Soviet-era journalism on the USSR, he isn’t easily fooled.

  2. Other than Trump fangirlhood, what is your evidence that the WSJ letter is “fabricated”? Or are you making this statement with complete disregard for whether it is true or false?

  3. Because the evidence that it even exists is a ‘Trust me, bro!’ from people connected to the Russia hoax.

    Because the only party guest mentioned is Trump when, by the description, there ought to be a whole host of names.

    Because the timing is amazingly convenient.

    None of it is definitive, but it all points the same way.

  4. Speaking of “exposure”…

    No wonder the Democrats are losing it….
    You’d be melting down, too, if all yer virtues criminal shenanigans were being exposed, piece by thuggish piece…

  5. And if anyone is still wondering why people are fleeing Illinois and/or why the Judicial branch (at least certain elements of it) is raising eyebrows….

    Looking at the bright side of all this, one might say that the Democrats have likely found another popular “cause” to rally around…

  6. Another day, another “Biden” scandal…
    (AKA “Your taxes at work”!!…though to be fair, this should have been pretty clear from the get-go.)

  7. It’s the same reason I knew E. Jean Carroll was lying. Trump is an alpha male and alphas don’t force moderately hot women into dressing rooms for a grope. And they don’t write creepy tributes to other men.

  8. I have been reading many of the ‘takes’ on DNI’s Tulsi Gabbard and the 100 documents (most or all? emails from the IC) released on Russiagate, centering on the December 2016 withdrawal and silencing of the President’s Daily Briefing — something which only President Obama could have done.

    I nominate the version at Zerohedge as the most complete as well as damning — using Big Graphic pull quotes and more to frame up it all. ZH incudes an excerpt from the prescient Matt Taibbi describing the contents and import, too.

    No doubt there will be more versions this coming week.

    From Steve Bannon’s WarRoom.org comes a five point action plan for dealing with the corrupt rubble in DC. A common recommendation is a new Special Prosecutor, given that the John Durham Report has been super-ceded by deeper documentation unavailable to his Special Counsel years ago.

    Which makes the coming Congressional Investigations all the more red meat filled with criminal possibilities.

    Key graf:

    …”I’ve written about it extensively that a rigged intelligence report was rushed out before Trump’s inauguration, in which the intelligence agencies claim that the Trump campaign and Russia colluded, and that this report was designed to undermine the Trump presidency.”…

    …”Still, Friday’s information release is important because it “gives context on how this happened and who was involved,” said Fleitz.

    “Obama definitely was involved…. There were whistleblowers who tried to stop this corrupt report. So I’m glad it’s getting out, but I don’t want to treat this as if this is something that we did not already know.”…

  10. So what are the chances that the following might “help” the truth-challenged “searchers of truth” among us…?

    Hmm. Didn’t think so…

  11. y81, the WSJ gives no convincing evidence that the alleged letter isn’t fabricated. The article isn’t up to credible journalistic standards.

  12. It’s the same reason I knew E. Jean Carroll was lying. Trump is an alpha male and alphas don’t force moderately hot women into dressing rooms for a grope. And they don’t write creepy tributes to other men.
    ==
    That might be your reason.
    ==
    Given that this supposedly happened in 2003 and Trump was acquainted with Epstein for about 15 years, I’m surprised that Trump is putting so many chips on the table here, but it may be the sort of thing he simply cannot imagine himself doing.
    ==
    It’s doubtful that either Reid Hoffman or the asinine jury which made the award took Jean Carroll seriously. The only piece of evidence the two had ever met (beyond her claims) was a snapshot of the Trumps on a receiving line speaking to her and another man. The lapse of time in reporting any offense and filing suit, her history of offering yarns about other men of consequence raping her, her admitted interest in rape fantasies, the outlandish character of the event as told, the resemblance of the event to the plot of an episode of one of the Law & Order franchise broadcast in 2012, and how little Carroll in 1996 resembled Ivana, Marla Maples, and Melania all suggest it was a fiction. Hoffman, the jury, the judge did not care; progtrash are bad people.

  13. So I’ve waited a day or two to see what falls out with Gabbard’s announcement. Everyday I drive by Drudge, CNN, and MSNBC. BTW, CNN has an interesting article that is waaay early on the D presidential horse race this morning.

    Anyway, no mention at all of the DNI”s announcement on any of those news sites. And no inkling that any of the left friends I follow even know about it…of course if one never ventures beyond those 3 sources the result is not surprising.

    I now would like to take bets on when, if ever, the DNI’s announcement ever penetrates the leftist sphere.

  14. Y81, I really don’t give a damn whether the supposed Trump note to Epstein is real or not. Its not, but even if it were, its a nothing burger.

    Meanwhile he’s fixing what your side has severely screwed up. That’s all I care about.

  15. We all remember that Gabbard was in “Biden”’s sights, right?

    Spied upon, harassed, intimidated…presumably because she jumped the rotten, corrupt, criminal wreck of a ship that was her former party.

    Hope she can take ‘em all down a peg or two…or many, many more.

  16. Wow, there is someone that believes Trump typed a personal statement like this, and despite everything in his life being self-referential to himself as “Trump”, this same fool believes that Trump signed this as “Donald”. Sucker.

  17. Taking a step back to get the fuller picture:

    …and why the Epstein affair—including whatever mud, dirt, crap and garbage they can conjure up (e.g., “the LETTER”)—may in fact be the Democrats’ last chance, their final Hail Mary….

  18. Barry, if this letter, which proves nothing whatever, is their last chance, they’re in really bad shape.

  19. Timing, timing, timing…

    (Plus a huge barrage of enfilading lying…coming from multiple directions…)

  20. y81,
    Believe what you will and hold that belief very tight for the gauntlet has been thrown.

  21. Meanwhile, Mayor Pete’s FINAL encomium…perhaps…

  22. Re the WSJ Trump smear?
    Allan Dershowitz says it’s the casual diction and provocative style of Ghislane Maxwell — definitely not Trump.

    Anyone, convince me otherwise?

  23. @TJ:Anyone, convince me otherwise?

    I would say that it is entirely unimportant whether or not Trump wrote it, and an unseemly desire to prove it to be fake gives people the impression that it really is important.

    I can completely believe Trump delegating the task to someone else, and forgetting about it. In which case discovery might turn that up in a lawsuit.

    The other issue is why is Dershowitz the Epstein/Maxwell oracle all of a sudden? He was Epstein’s attorney, but I sincerely hope not for twenty years or so. Even a werewolf is entitled to legal counsel, but if I were in Dershowitz’s shoes, I would not represent Epstein any more after all the things Dershowitz did to help him get off lightly in 2008 and be free to abuse others later.

    If Dershowitz DID continue to be Epstein’s attorney after 2008 then he probably shouldn’t be talking so much.

  24. and an unseemly desire to prove it to be fake gives people the impression that it really is important.
    ==
    It’s not unseemly at all. And the allegation is facially sketchy.

  25. The DoT is a massive grant money source, but $80 bn spent on DEI grants sounds like the Post missed a decimal point or two.

  26. Art Deco,

    You can add to the E. Jean Carroll list: the outfit she claimed she was raped in, which she modeled for a magazine cover shoot, didn’t exist in the 90s.

    The simple fact of her modeling the dress for public display is odd in itself and is another fact suggesting it was a lie. But she was also literally lying about it.

    I read her account of the rape. I don’t watch Law and Order. But her rape account sounded more like fantasy than a real account. The account suggests he raped her standing, with his penis (not like Joe using his finger).

  27. …If Dershowitz DID continue to be Epstein’s attorney after 2008 then he probably shouldn’t be talking so much.

    From:
    “Alan Dershowitz defends helping Jeffrey Epstein secure controversial plea deal” (12 July 2019)
    https://www.timesofisrael.com/alan-dershowitz-defends-helping-jeffrey-epstein-secure-controversial-plea-deal/amp/

    …Dershowitz says that aside from his role as a member of Epstein’s legal team, he has not been in contact with Epstein since the plea deal was finalized….
