And then there are the Democrat primaries for mayor of New York City
Check out candidate Zohran Mamdani, a “progressive.” He sets a new low:
Mamdani, just 33 years old, is vying to become the city’s youngest mayor.
He’s got clever videos and a lively presence on social media.
The base of his support comes from young New Yorkers, which proves the wisdom of George Bernard Shaw’s observation that “Youth is wasted on the young.”
Then there are those ardent leftists behind him who refuse to grow up, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Born in Uganda, Mamdani would also be Gotham’s first Muslim mayor, and his refusal to recognize Israel as the legitimate homeland for Jews is another bridge too far.
Lest you think New Yorkers aren’t crazy enough to elect Mamdani, think again. It’s at least a possibility:
The assemblyman [Mamdani] has consistently been in second place, but some recent polls indicate he has closed to within striking distance [of frontrunner Andrew Cuomo].
That change has alarmed elements of the city’s old guard, which is suddenly rallying to Cuomo’s side.
Bloomberg and the NY Times have both come out for Cuomo, despite his history during COVID. Mamdani is seen as decidedly more dangerous, which certainly seems correct. Yet another factor is that the primary features ranked choice voting, which makes it more complex if no candidate gets a majority.
The primary is scheduled for June 24, and there are eleven candidates.
And what of Mayor Adams? He’s running as an Independent. But according to polls, he doesn’t stand a chance against the eventual Democrat nominee.

I’m sure there are some sane people in NYC who won’t deserve what they might get.
If Mamdani wins the mayor’s job, I will not be surprised one bit.
NYC had no qualms electing a communist like DiBlasio, and has learned nothing from the experience.
Kate – yes, at least 10. Maybe even 20.
Snake Plissken will not be available.
Like Kate, some will not deserved what they are about to receive. As for the rest, Trump build that wall
The Mamdani constituency appears to be the same one who put Brandon Johnson over the top in Chicago. They were careless people, Tom and Daisy….

American school children should be taught about the long conflict between Islam and the rest of the world. Instead they get taught anti Western propaganda and pro Muslim propaganda.
When you have the people who support “LGBTQ” like a religion and support Islamic expansion then you know we are up against ignorance and stupidity to the nth degree!
Democrats (and the left in general) are not good at governing. It’s because they aren’t really interested in the basics of governance: police, fire, roads, garbage, utilities. The entire point of a city is taking advantage of a geographical location for the purpose of commerce. Coastal cities are ports, Chicago is next to a lake and handled butchering cattle, Dallas and Houston are where the oil is, Vegas is where they can gamble, etc. The only purpose of government is facilitating the commerce that’s going on. Protect people’s lives and property, make sure they can ship things and talent, get rid of trash, and make sure the lights stay on. Do these basic things and you can run a city.
But Democrats take all of those things for granted. They hand the top jobs to their cronies, who hope the dedicated old hands will do the dirty work of the basics. Meanwhile, the Democrats can work on the things they really want to do, primarily social engineering. DEI, arts and culture, LGBTQ, licensing, regulation, etc., are what Democrats think of as good government, but it’s really the attempt to govern by finesse. The basics are the hard, physical work of catching criminals, tarring the roads, and shipping off the garbage. Anything else is finesse.
Like Adam Smith said, there is a lot of ruin in an economy. These Democrat-run cities are starting to find out exactly how much ruin there is. It’s no wonder Ayn Rand said the strikers would win in Atlas Shrugged when the lights went out in New York City. There are some things that can’t be finessed. Hopefully New Yorkers never find out, but if they keep voting for government by finesse, they will, and sooner than they think.
Kate said, “I’m sure there are some sane people in NYC who won’t deserve what they might get.” I think that was the argument that Abraham used to save Sodom and Gomorrah. It didn’t work out too well, as I recall.
They’re generally “not good at governing” if/when they decide, for whatever reason, to go down the messianic rabbit hole.
(That is, if they get sidetracked—or CLAIM to be motivated—by “dreams” of transforming the world into some sort of theoretical NIRVANA….)
Nope. Nothing short of perfection.
And if they can make some money on the scam along the way, well why the heck not (since, after all, they’re da good guys…).
“Snake Plissken will not be available.”
No, but judging by the state of things, and the things at stake, I bet their phone has him on speed-dial, and he’s been placed on ‘Will Call’. NYC voting habits just make me shake my head.
One recalls carpenter wanted the rebels (loosely based on the weather underground) to win at the end he didnt care about the larger consequences of the hartford conference

The “burden”… uh, burden. Take a knee, bray. This calls for: Super Democratics!
Barry Meislin:
Here’s my take on the book Reading Lolita in Tehran.
Anyone else think Cuomo could actually do the job? Forget the pandemic. Forget all the charges of unethical behavior. I think he could be exactly what NYC needs right now.
A large part of me is hoping it happens. Schadenfreude indeed.
Meanwhile in L.A., one discovers precisely why Kamala Harris HAD TO WIN in November (and that’s just L.A.!) and why DOGE has been such a thorn in the side of the uber-corrupt DPOTUS and those impoverished crooks expecting its “assistance”!
(Whaddaya do if you gotta keep the money flowing but the spigot has been totally plugged??)

Shadow:
What IS the job? Does anyone even know what the mayor of New York does anymore? Seems like it’s just crisis management and director of Tourism.
The complications involved in “running” NYC just pile up. Five borough presidents plus the bureaucracies involved there. Country bureaucracies. Unfunded liabilities like city employee pensions, infrastructure spending to keep a city of 7 million running, and the unions involved with that. Education, housing, crime, race relations, the media, corruption. All a mayor can do is advertise some Home Run policy initiative to get people excited and get elected, then on the first day in office, there are thirty people lined up at the mayor’s door telling him exactly why he can’t do the thing he promised to get himself elected.
Gradually, then suddenly. That’s what New York’s decline is going to look like.
