Fauci’s pardon may hold, but his reputation has been destroyed. Likewise that of WHO, the Chinese Communist Party, Cuomo, and so on.
The bad guys really were bad.
Modern Muslims could not do this.

I’ll wager you’ll find water supply systems and sewer systems in Tangier, Algiers, Tunis, and Alexandria, at least in the more well-heeled sections of town.
@ sdferr > “Francisco Tarrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra”
One of my favorites, no matter who plays it. We have an Isbin CD and really like her.
With all those three, AesopFan, I was selecting for what I hear as highest quality tremolo (more or less in honor of the waterworks), though I think there are many beautiful and highly musical performances with somewhat less rigorous tremolo.
I think my favorite ancient water supply system is a Byzantine water-wheel that pumps water uphill; they still run, though nothing is hooked up them. The Arabs kept them going when they took over Syria and indeed built more using them as a model.
The medieval Muslim role in science and technology, like the Irish monks, was more preservation and transmission than invention or discovery, but that was way better than nothing.
Thanks for the White House COVID-19 link, huxley.
very tongue in cheek on kunstler’s part
So, you wonder why Democrats are so anxious to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia back to the USA. Is it to lead the national ticket in 2028? Who else have they got? Pete Buttigieg doesn’t have half of Kilmar’s charisma. AOC is just pretending to be Sandy-from-the-block — and everybody knows it. Who else best represents the party’s newest constituency: the undocumented (people unfairly deprived of documents by a cruel and careless bureaucracy)? Who best represents the Democratic Party’s number one policy goal: diversity fosterization! Kilmar, of course! Viva Kilmar!
It’s also pretty obvious by his recent actions, that Judge “Jeb” Boasberg is angling to be Kilmar’s running mate in ‘28. Perfect! He could fulfil the traditional role of vice-president by doing nothing for four years, which is exactly what people of non-color should do in the Democratic Party’s new national order. (Haven’t they already done enough?) Boasberg could set an example for the rest of America’s dwindling color-deficient population: quit hogging all the action, stop collecting all those dividends and annuities, step aside and give the other a chance at the American Dream!
this bit of dark humor illustrates the nihilism that the Democrats show toward our institutions, as the Judges actions going back to the Russian scam has been doing
his draconian sentencing against
J 6ers whose overreach was reversed by the Court, one of those magic eightball moments,
regretably the possum appeals court
plays along to our detriment
effendi mahdawi’s story is threadbare,
as with his other sjp associate, mahmoud khalil
not exactly in the jesse smollet genre of fabulism but close enough for government work
“I’ll wager you’ll find water supply systems and sewer systems in Tangier, Algiers, Tunis, and Alexandria, at least in the more well-heeled sections of town.” I lived in Cairo in 2007-2009. The whole area, rich or poor, had water supply and sewer systems.
On the medieval system, there were plenty of Roman aqueducts and water systems on the Iberian peninsula, possibly some still in working order. They could have been copied.
The only scientific innovation which Arabs developed (rather than merely transmitting) that I know of is Arabic numerals.
My comment was meant to mean the water clock. I know they have running water and sewer treatment now.
Kate, did you drink the water? Or use only bottled water?
Shirehome, I’m trying to remember that. In India, we had to use purified water, not tap water, and the same was true in Dubai, even in fancy hotels. I just don’t remember, but probably we used bottled water.
@Kate:The only scientific innovation which Arabs developed (rather than merely transmitting) that I know of is Arabic numerals.
I’m afraid this is an understandable misconception: they were transmitted from India by the Arabs. The Arabic contribution was to represent fractions to the right of the decimal point.
They did innovate in math and science, it’s just that’s not mostly what they did. A list of their innovations would be long and tiresome.
Hmm…didn’t know that Omar Khayyam was a serious mathematician.
Anyway. That’s not a long list and I would note that all those heavy hitters were from the Islamic Golden Age — 8th to 13th centuries. That was a long time ago.
Sure, they made and make some contributions. However, Western science would have done fine without them.
Others may decide as others will.
Here is a quote about the risen Christ from Neem Karoli Baba AKA Maharaj-ji, who was Ram Dass’s guru from “Be Here Now.”

as cs lewis said ‘if this a lie’ what am I doing this for, for some 2000 years men and women tried to observe this truth, perhaps imperfectly, but since about a 100 years with the onset of Reason, which led to the Bloodiest century in recorded history, where the Old Gods re entered the world, and their heresies became doctrine, well that’s where we find ourselves, in the world of the Phoenician and Babylonian gods,
I prefer

“Wherever You Be, There You Are;”
a more nuanced philosophy.

Modern Muslims could not do this. We do owe a lot to Muslims from another time (not saying they were the good guys) in terms of science and medicine.

I’ve never been terribly impressed. Here’s a reasonably objective breakdown:
