  1. Now do “Lady of Spain.” Oh, ok — that was uncalled for. It’s actually a pretty good rendition. Leaving aside the fact that it sounds about right, the question is, “who would ever think to play Vivaldi on an accordion?”

  2. Feel-good story of the day (https://tinyurl.com/y6fjumpb):

Autistic boy, from Choctaw Oklahoma, can do fifty perfect bird calls.

P.S. Autistic or not, if you’re a birder, you might want to spend $20 to download the “Cornell Guide to Bird Sounds: United States and Canada.”

Here’s a general description of the database:

The 1.8GB download includes 4,954 MP3 audio files covering 901 regularly occurring, vagrant, and introduced species in the United States (including Hawaii) and Canada. The audio in this collection was hand-picked and masterfully edited to ensure premium sound quality while showcasing a species’ range of vocalizations. The collection was made possible by the contributions of more than 495 sound recordists who archived their recordings in the Macaulay Library.

Proceeds from the sale of this guide will go to supporting free Macaulay Library tools to enhance your birding and power research and conservation.

  3. Thanks for that link Cornflour, lovely story. (I hope someone happens to introduce the birdsong music of Olivier Messiean to that kid and perhaps he finds a kindred ear.)

  4. Re: Vivaldi on accordion

Not bad. Better than I expected. More impressive in concept than outcome.

Made me wonder if Walter/Wendy Carlos had ever done a synthesizer version of “The Four Seasons.” She has — “Switched-On Vivaldi.” However, Carlos is very careful about digital copies of her work and her copyrights in general.

Here’s a YouTube playing her version of “Spring.”

–Vivaldi: “Switched-On” The Four Seasons: Spring – I. Allegro (Synthesized)”

Note that the video carefully fails to mention Carlos at all. Carlos has such videos taken down. Get it while you can.

I find it quite beautiful. I’ve been a big Carlos fan since the 70s.

  5. I never would have thought of Vivaldi on an accordion, and it’s amazing.

And the bird call kid is wonderful! Thanks for the Cornell reference also. My husband has something called iBird Pro on his phone, which has photos and calls.

  6. You want accordion music, you got accordion music. This song from the Mexican band, Los Alegres del Barranco, in the narco-corrido genre. El Dueño Del Palenque/The Owner of the Arena. The link has it all: video, Spanish lyrics, and English lyrics.

Turns out that their glorification of drug lords got their US visas revoked.Mexican Corrido Band Has Visas Revoked After Displaying Images of Ultra-Violent Cartel Leader

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced last week that the U.S. has revoked the visas of the members of the Mexican corrido band Los Alegres del Barranco following a concert where they displayed the image of drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes at their concert in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Cervantes is the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). He’s known as “El Mencho.”
“I’m a firm believer in freedom of expression, but that doesn’t mean that expression should be free of consequences,” Landau posted on X. “A Mexican band, ‘Los Alegres del Barranco,’ portrayed images glorifying drug kingpin ‘El Mencho’ — head of the grotesquely violent CJNG cartel — at a recent concert in Mexico.”

The Mexican band, Los Alegres del Barranco, replied with a classic “I’m sorry you were offended” spiel.

“Through this message, Los Alegres del Barranco would like to offer our sincerest apologies for what happened,” the band wrote of the Guadalajara show. “As a musical group, it was never our intention to create controversy, much less to offend. We acknowledge that, as artists, we have a great responsibility to our audiences, especially to the new generations who follow our music.”
“We deeply regret that part of the show was perceived as offensive or inappropriate,” the statement added.

They deeply regret it because it got their US visas revoked. Actually, glorifying the drug bizness is a big part of what Los Alegres del Barranco is about. At that concert in Guadalajara they played El Dueño De Palenque (The Owner of the Arena), which glorifies another Mexican drug lord.See the above link.

While American movies and song lyrics deal a lot with criminals, generally they are in the “crime doesn’t pay” genre. The Mexican narco-corrido song linked above, is definitely in the “crime pays” genre.

    Regarding the visa, don’t know.

In one of the “All Creatures Great and Small” stories, by “James Herriot”, the day was saved by a farmhand who seemingly had only one gift in life, the ability to accurately imitate a warble-fly, and he used this skill to quickly chase cows into the barn. His services were frequently in demand.

  8. Wow, what a virtuoso he is on this thing – and what a beautiful instrument it is, a lot more bass register than I’m used to seeing. I wonder if he wrote the arrangement, too. One of the things I really noticed, and savored when I went through Germany and Austria and Czechia a few years ago was the superb acoustics in many of the abbeys and cathedrals. We attended a number of concerts put on in these places and it was truly exceptional. You can tell it was additive to his performance here, too. Nice.

Art Coates was my grandfather’s brother and they were from Oklahoma. Art was a helluva whistler. However, not autistic.

He cut an album and made it to the “Lawrence Welk Show” multiple times. Here he is whistling the Lawrence Welk theme:

He was the top salesman for my grandfather’s company. He was also a friend of Harry Truman and appears twice in the White House records meeting with Truman for lunch or evening drinks. Here’s one:

  10. I mean, I could imagine Bach walking into a church hearing this fugue, 300 years ago and then seeing this chubby guy reeling it out on this……thing. He’d be standing there with his gob hanging open like a bear trap, and his second reaction, organist that he was, would be to get his hooks on that damn thing so he could use it himself.

  11. just so you are wondering, no relation to sr cervantes,* I chose the nick for it’s literary resonance

*who was a former mexican police officer,

as with many figures in the underworld leadership, the zetas came from US trained special forces

so they fall afoul of the kingpin law, like Geraldo Ortiz and Perez Villar
better then the bucket full of leadthat el mencho would offer them, if they refused,

  12. Forgot to mention Art Coates’ album was titled “Whistling With the Birds.”

Story was that he would lie in bed at night and imitate the birds he heard at dusk.

  13. Funny, how months later we still know, have been told, practically nothing about either of the two perps who tried to assassinate President Trump.

With all of the resources at it’s disposal, you’d think that the FBI would have compiled a dossier six inches thick on each one of them—hundreds of in person interviews, cell phone and hard drive dumps, Internet presence and activity, any video or photo evidence, friend, girl or boyfriend interviews, membership in any organizations, foreign travel or connections, work record, bank accounts, school transcripts, any interactions with law enforcement or arrest records, medical records, all purchases, travel records, etc, etc., but no public announcement, nothing.

Does anyone else think this is suspicious?

Bach can be played on any instrument and any combination of instruments. Orchestration, schmorchestration.

I had you pegged as being of Cuban origin.

    Snow on Pine:

I do. I suspect many others here likewise.

  16. that is correct,

the court filing seems to suggest that routh, had contact with some Ukrainian officials, perhaps like Princip and certain Serbian officials, but that doesn’t seem to be an interesting story, for many,

i guess one can make a parallel to Zangara, who apparently was hired by the Mob, to hit Anton Cermak, and was quickly dispatched,

  17. I chose the nick for it’s literary resonance

    miguel cervantes:

    How dare you, sir! 🙂

  18. Usually you hear virtuoso Balkan music on a big Dallape 6-row accordion like that, but it’s got plenty of capabilities (and the player likewise) for covering Vivaldi orchestrations too. Bravo Aleksandr Hrustevich!

  19. Snow on Pine asks “Funny, how months later we still know, have been told, practically nothing about either of the two perps who tried to assassinate President Trump.”

There’s now a third assassin being charged by DoJ under Bondi, Shawn Monper. Ironically, he’s from Butler, PA — where the kid named Cooke shot DJTs ear, only fortunately. Miraculously. Introductory details:

  20. huxley @ 12:34, not my cup of tea.
sdferr @ 5:21pm, very much my cup of tea. What a great arrangement, thanks!

  21. Aggie @ 7:04pm,

I read your comment and thought for sure the accordion would have been contemporaneous with Bach. It’s basically a pipe organ/bellows contraption made small (using reeds rather than pipes). But you’re right. The accordion wasn’t invented until the 1820s!

For most of my adult life I’ve been minorly obsessed with the scenario of Wolfgang Mozart somehow traveling through time and hearing modern music and being exposed to modern, electronic instruments. I wonder if he would appreciate ragtime, big band, swing, rock, jazz, fusion? What would he think of electric keyboards? Synthesizers? My guess is he’d find ragtime amusing and pick it up rather quickly. I think he’d like some of the other stuff, but find most of it unchallenging. I think he’d dislike most all rock, even more musically complex, prog rock stuff like Emerson, Lake and Palmer, or Rush. Would he like Porter, Gershwin? Rhapsody in Blue?
