And in non-election news …. — 40 Comments

  1. Import the Third World, become the Third World. Why did they think they would assimilate? They have no interest in that. Fools are they.

  2. “all forms of antisemitism” is a code. There are Palestinian activists who maintain that Palestinians are the “true” Semites and the UN Secretary General is condemning being against THEM.

Confusing the issue is that historically “Semite” was a broader category than “Jew”. For example, Arabic and ancient Egyptian are “Semitic” languages.

  3. Arabic and Coptic are indeed Semitic languages, with some structure and words in common, or strongly related. I think this is true also of Aramaic and Syriac.

And really, “anti-Muslim bigotry?” Muslim gangs organized and carried out these assaults. Pointing that out is not bigotry.

  4. Kate:

Copic isn’t a Semitic language, although it belongs to the Afro-Aasiatic language group, which includes Semitic languages. It is very very ancient, a direct descendant of the language spoken by the people of Pharaonic Egypt. Over time it acquired many Greek and Arabic loanwords, and it has certain structural similarities with Semitic languages, but it is most definitely not a Semitic language. Copts who can speak liturgical Coptic are like the Numenoreans of the Second Age speaking bits and pieces of the Quenya tongue spoken by the Eldar in Valinor.

The Coptic people regard themselves as ethno-racial descendants of the true Egyptians, i.e. as the Egyptians of the time of the Pharaohs.

Aramaic and Syriac are Semitic languages. Aramaic is still spoken by Assyrian Christians. It is the household language of my Assryian friends, and very much a living language notwithstanding ongoing efforts by Iraqi Muslims (who else) to eradicate the Assyrian population of the Assyrian Plain in Iraq. This is the homeland of the Assyrian peoples going back to the fifth century (!) BC. My Assyrian friends are proud of the fact that Aramaic, not Hebrew, was the language spoken by Christ, and Assyria was the first “nation” to adopt Christianity.

    ______
I have a 1929 Britannica, in which the article on Antisemitism was written by a British rabbi. He is emphatic that the word should be used only to refer to racial theories, and not to include religious oppression. He also believes it arose fairly recently.

While it is a more logical way to use it, words’ meanings are determined at least as much by historical usage as by logic.

  6. Bill Ackman responds to the Pogrom:

“It is time to completely rethink immigration policies globally. Living in the West is an incredible privilege. We should treat it as one. Open borders will kill Western civilization. Careful vetting of immigrants, standards for being part of Western society, and deportation for violating those standards are going to become essential features of immigration policies globally. Tell me why I am wrong.”

Joe Henrich, a Harvard professor and author of a very interesting book on the roots of Western success, responds, arguing for the importance of immigration.

  7. Ancient Egyptian was NOT a Semitic language. Semitic was/is a subgroup of the Afro-Asiatic family of languages. Ancient Egyptian was also a subgroup of the Afro-Asiatic language family, but it is nevertheless quite distinct from Semitic languages.

See my post above at 6:24 PM.

  8. David Foster:

Is Henrich blurring the distinction between legal and illegal immigration? I don’t see Ackman saying that legal immigration should stop, just illegal immigration. Limiting immigrants to legal ones allows a country to make decisions about how many immigrants it feels would be beneficial, and from where.

“Open borders” is not legal immigration.

Also, immigration in the past was in the absence of the welfare state. The combination of generous welfare and open borders, plus letting in many immigrants from cultures that openly speak of wanting to destroy the west, with many such immigrants not assimilating, is a new phenomenon.

I haven’t read Henrich’s book, of course, but if he’s not taking those differences into account he’s making a huge error.

  9. What will the lamest of lame-duck administrations do about the open border before Trump is inaugurated?

Will the Biden people just turn the spigots on full and wave them through?

Spite. More problems for Trump. Demographics.

  10. Thanks, IrishOtter49.

Copts in Egypt do regard themselves as being the ancient Egyptian people, probably because they are. They became Christian not too long after the time of Christ. They held out for centuries until the Muslim pogroms of the thirteenth century and following caused many to give up and become Muslim and to adopt Arabic as their everyday language. Between that and the usual Muslim capture of women, I think today’s Egyptian Muslim population has a heavy dose of Copt in its DNA, although they treat Copts as a despised minority in many places in Egypt, and only grudgingly fairly in metropolitan areas.

  11. Neo….”Also, immigration in the past was in the absence of the welfare state” An important difference.

Also, immigration in the past, with much slower transportation & communications, involved much more of a cutoff from one’s home country. And the loss of societal self-confidence in Western societies has also reduced the pull toward assimilation.

Something I wrote on immigration, citing both a Russian Jewish immigrant who came in 1894, and the great Harry Flashman.

  12. Went to a stereotypical American Thing yesterday.

It was a high school football game. Got there at full dark, clear half moon. Starting to get cold. Lots of light in the stadium, people greeting each other, finding seats, being sociable.
The teams stopped their warm ups. Left the field. The marching band came out. The spectators rose. Gentlemen removed their hats. Active duty and former military were invited to render the hand salute, the announcer saying we’re here because they served. The band played the first verse of out National Anthem.

Anthropologists might call it a ritual of intensification.

It was on the outskirts of a small town, dark and cold outside the venue.

There were probably a hundred thrity guys dressed, apparently the JV also dresses which means in uniform.

Bigger than average. Better physical condition than average. More physically aggressive than average.

Such guys are apples which do not necessarily fall far from the tree. There were some impressive older generations there, too.

If the hunted jews had fled into our space, we could hope the pogrom mob was quite large. So there would be enough to go around.

    This makes me sick.

I used to say it would be funny/sad, but now it’s just sad that Jews will find their safe spaces in NASCAR events and Baptist churches. And midwestern high school football games.

  13. It’s even sadder that they don’t generally realize that nor do they wish to.

Bitter clingers (to their preconceptions, or should that be “prejudices”…
    – – – – – – –
If the good professor (Henrich) cannot, or simply refuses to, make that essential distinction then it’s merely classic Democratic Party “bait ‘n switch”…
    – – – – – – –
I believe Coptic is considered, categorized as a Hamitic language (after one of Noah’s three sons…just as “Semitic” is named after another son of his).

    One despairs….

  14. Barry,

What are the Japhethic languages? Klingon? Esperanto?

The neophiles are an erudite bunch, so I’m confident Esperanto is known to all, but do you know of its ties to George Soros’ father? https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/arts-letters/articles/secret-language-of-george-soros

I became fascinated by Esperanto in the early ’80s, and knew then of Tivadar Soros, and somewhat admired his son as a leader in the movement, decades before I learned of George’s political machinations. Also, in the article you’ll read of a tie to Max Bialystock, whom miguel recently mentioned. Oddly, the article fails to mention Esperanto’s tie to another, famous Jew, William Shatner, star of the only film I know of filmed entirely in Esperanto.

  15. The Dutch authorities need to pursue and prosecute every one of the perpetrators to the full extent of the law. If they need help, I’m sure Netanyahu would loan some Mossad agents to assist. I mean this literally. It is time for European nations to make it very clear this will not be tolerated, and thanks to Israel’s recent strong showing in defense of their people it is a very opportune time for all nations to show similar gravity in prosecuting antisemites who harm their citizens. We also need to see this in the U.S.

  16. Except that the Dutch police have let almost all of them free…
This, TOGETHER with the reported warnings of a planned widespread disturbance from Israeli security organs that were ignored, TOGETHER with the abysmal response time by the Dutch police once the attacks began, would appear to indicate that something is very rotten…
    – – – – – – –
    Regarding Japheth…
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javan
    – – – – – – –
Regarding Esperanto, you may want to look up Zamenhoff.

  17. Rufus, you’re blowing my mind here! Japheth to Esperanto to Shatner (!).

There was a time when I might have found Esperanto intellectually interesting, but, perhaps out of ignorance about its true nature, I don’t. At this time, I view it as a purely artificial, as in non-organic, attempt to bridge communication barriers. But a regionally limited one, I suspect at the same time, since as far as I know, its words and grammar and all that are derived from European languages. How many East Asian Esperantists are there?

  18. Re: Egyptian conversion to Islam (admittedly a tangent to a tangent)

It’s worth noting that in earlier centuries the Arabs ruling the place actively discouraged Christian converts to Islam, because there was a lucrative tax for non-Muslims, and they preferred the money to converts.

  19. Phillips Sells,

English has succeeded far beyond Zamenhof’s wildest rejov. Spoken by 15% of the Earth’s population. It will likely be 25% in a decade, or two.

  20. Well, Ancient Greek, or at least one of its dialects.

According to Jewish tradition, Japheth (in Hebrew, Yefet or Yafet, pronounced Yaafet—the first vowel changes according to certain rules of Biblical Hebrew Grammar) was the forerunner of the Hellenic peoples and islanders.
    OMMV.
That Wikipedia link, above, refers to one of Japheth’s sons.
(Note that the Hebrew word for “Greece” is “Yavan”.)

  21. BTW, some claim that the name Japheth/Yefet reflects the Hebrew word for beauty (Yofee / Yaafeh) which correlates with the Ancient Greek cultural stress on art and aesthetics….

  22. Related (Amsterdam)…
    “Dhimmis, Amsterdam is a taste of the future in Europe;
“Today, a large part of the Amsterdam police force is made up of second-generation migrants from North Africa and the Middle East. They do not care about Jews’ safety. And it will be that way all over Europe.…”—
    https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/398870

  23. Besides the Japethic languages you have the Hamitic languages… and now you know how long ago those classifications were named, and not all of them have survived modern scholarship.

Irish and British Celtic royal houses also claimed descent from Japheth.

  24. Clarification on the attacks in Amsterdam:
    “Geert Wilders: No one who took part in Amsterdam pogrom was arrested;
“Leader of Dutch Party for Freedom disputes Amsterdam police claim: All arrests were made before and during the soccer match and NOT during the pogrom.”—
    https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/398891
    Key grafs:

Geert Wilders, leader of the Dutch Party for Freedom, claimed on Saturday night that, contrary to the claims of the Dutch authorities, no arrests had been made of people who took part in the pogrom against Israelis in Amsterdam on Thursday night.

“I am speechless. Amsterdam Police just confirmed that NO ONE has been arrested during the Islamic Jewhunt in Amsterdam Thursday night. All arrests have been made before and during the soccer match and NOT during the pogrom,” Wilders wrote in a post on X….

    [Emphasis mine; Barry M.]

    Thus
    1. Reports that suspects were arrested and then released did not refer to actual attackers.
    2. The Dutch police did act but only before the game, and during it, BUT NOT DURING THE RIOTS THEMSELVES.

  25. Questions, questions…
“Furious Dem official brands Kamala Harris’ campaign a ‘$1 billion disaster’ in foul-mouthed tirade”—
    https://nypost.com/2024/11/10/us-news/dnc-official-lindy-li-blasts-harris-campaign-as-a-1-billion-disaster/

    Short answer:
“They’re thugs, criminals and liars. If not all of ‘em then most of ‘em. And they’ve been doing this for years ‘n years so why should this year be any different? Oh, and they’re better than you, much, much better—smarter, more educated, more moral, more civilized, more aware, more compassionate, more caring, etc. By definition. And did we mention Thao we’re doing ALL OF THIS to SAVE America and Our Democracy? And you’re complaining????”

  26. The ancient (Pharaonic) Egyptians called Egypt “Kem,” This is a derivation of Ham[itic], with the “h” pronounced “kh.” “Kem” means, literally, “Black Land”, in reference to the extremely fertile [black] soil of the Nile Delta and along the Nile River. Thus an Egyptian diplomat, introducing himself to, say, the King of Mittani, might say (proudly!), “I am a Kemite, a man from the Land of Kem.”

In a DNA analysis of Egyptian Copts thde ancient Egyptian (Khemitic) ancestry would typically be dominant over Arabic ancestry, although there has of course been much intermixing of the two peoples over the centuries. This was very much the case in the past, I don’t know how much it is the case now. In the event, Copts rightly think of themselves as a people distinct from Arabs.

  27. And just in case you were wondering….

    “On Election Day, Biden-Harris Admin Quietly Waived Terrorism Sanctions on Palestinian Government, Docs Show;
“West Bank government is still violating US law but will get a sanctions break anyway, according to congressional notice“—
    https://freebeacon.com/israel/on-election-day-biden-harris-admin-quietly-waived-terrorism-sanctions-on-palestinian-government-docs-show/

    Just in case….
    H/T Instapundit

  28. Right.
The question is, can “Biden” push this monstrosity through before “he” says “Buh-bye” (as well as what other horrendous damage might “he” be able to wreak in the next eight weeks, before—HOPEFULLY—departing from the scene…)
