  1. Tablet Mag, Alex Joffe, “Headhunters“, How anthropology helps us understand the Oct. 7 massacres and the people who committed them

I have a theory that Neolithic farmers occasionally took part in headhunting: the ritual practice of severing and preserving human heads. At various sites in Syria and the Levant, like Jericho, archaeologists found plastered and otherwise decorated skulls. Whereas most scholars believe that the skulls belonged to venerated ancestors, I and a few other archaeologists believe that these were victims of headhunting expeditions—ritualized violence. As in much later cultures, the skulls were artifacts of magic and power collected by deeply violent societies.

So here’s the thing: Hamas are headhunters.

  2. L’Shana Tova to that girl who was rescued after 10 years, and sincere hopes that she can overcome what happened to her.

  3. I remember the Ramallah lynching very well. I wondered at the time why the Israelis didn’t just pulverize that building and everyone in it on the spot. Perhaps because it was the era of the peace process. Had to let the peace process work.

Glad the Israelis are playing by different rules now. It really does seem like they’re settling some old scores. Good. And good news about the Yazidi girl.

  4. These were the people obama called the jv team thank heavens for her rescue

  5. “We eliminated terrorist Aziz Salha, who took part in the Ramallah lynching in Oct. 2000” Israel Defense Forces

“he had been in an Israeli prison until 2011, when he was one of the people (Sinwar being another) who was released in the Shalit exchange, which turns out to have been one of the worst decisions Israel ever made.” neo

That decision would not have been made had Israel a policy of providing convicted jihadists with an ‘unclean’ execution.

  6. God bless the young Yazidi and her family reunion…long peaceful life & swift recovery from her trauma…and a safe place to call home from now on.

  7. The girl has gone through puberty and entered young adult hood as a captive. Was she treated as a slave and abused, or was she treated as family?
    Pretty tough situation.
If we are hoping she is happy to be returned, are we hoping she was mistreated as a prisoner? If we are hoping she was not mistreated all this time, are we certain she wants to go home?
Imagine the choice will ultimately be hers, and I wish her well.

Reminds me of movies, one old western where grown woman leaves rescuers to return to tribe, another where long ago kidnapped child is rescued and chooses to return to drug fueled street life

  8. Another one bites the dust

Tonight’s Israeli Airstrikes on the Southern Suburbs of Beirut are said to have Targeted a Deep-Underground Bunker utilized by Hezbollah, hiding inside of which Israeli Officials believe was the New Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hashem Safieddine as well as his Family and several other Senior Hezbollah Officials.

  9. @ sdferr > “Tablet Mag, Alex Joffe, “Headhunters“

An unusual thesis, not sure what to make of it, or if it has any practical application, but interesting. Joffe’s archaeologist/anthropologist viewpoint is at least different.
