  1. Wonderful Song, and Presentation.
I remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan Show, in their Marine Uniforms.
Just sent this to my wonderful Wife, of 56 years.

  2. Putting this here rather than on the Milei post from a couple of days ago: We shouldn’t neglect Bukele, who also spoke eloquently at the UN:

In El Salvador, we do not imprison the opposition, we do not censor opinions or confiscate property for thinking differently. Here, no one is arrested for expressing their ideas.

In El Salvador, we prioritize the safety of our honest citizens over the comfort of criminals. Some say that we have imprisoned thousands, but the reality is we have freed millions.

  3. Were the Jan 6th events a calculated plan to enable Trump prosecution for something illegal, like insurrection? A plot along those lines is almost entirely in view now.

Clash Daily does the run-down. “One-Two Punch Knocks The Fangs Out Of EVERY J6 ‘Insurrection’ Narrative…We already knew it was bogus. Now our evidence got a WHOLE lot stronger”. –Clash Daily

  4. I hope Kate is ok in NC. Helene took a much more east track over NC rather than through Tenn.

Here in Jax we had very high winds from 11pm to 2am…many gusts above 70mph. Biggest problem here is no power. Our house lost at midnight so going on 12 hours now. JEA outage map shows large areas of Jax without power and about 150k customers which translates to about 600k people. No restoration times given.

Further to our west Lake City and Perry are in very bad shape.

And if that’s not enough, models show a Helene duplicate for next weekend.

  5. I wondered about Jacksonville, physicsguy. Sounds like a mess. I am about to possibly martyr myself in the service of a fair election in NC. I have to drive through some very heavy rain and flood warnings to take my in-person training this afternoon. Wish me luck.

  6. ToI, “IDF says Beirut strike targeted Hezbollah’s main headquarters“:
    https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/idf-says-beirut-strike-targeted-hezbollahs-main-headquarters/

IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari says the Israeli Air Force struck Hezbollah’s main headquarters in the Lebanese capital of Beirut a short while ago.

Hagari says the center was built underneath civilian buildings in the Dahiyeh suburb, a known Hezbollah stronghold in Beirut.

The IDF spokesman does not mention whether Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah was a target or was believed to be present at the site.

    Good. Don’t stop.

  7. The Pentagon has now said that the United States had “No Advanced Warning” about the Israeli Decapitation Strike against Hezbollah in Beirut, despite Senior Israeli Officials claiming that they were notified prior to the Strike.

Meanwhile Hezbollah flunkies are scurrying around trying to figure out how to use AI to create a deep-fake of Hassan Nasrallah as a man still alive and well.

  8. Democratic donors fork over thousands to launch right-wing spoiler candidates

Democratic donors who funded the collection of signatures for Mr. Bowman’s candidacy include Elizabeth Steinglass, a D.C.-based poet and author who has contributed large sums of money to the Democratic Party and individual candidates, including $41,300 to the House Democrats fundraising arm, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and $21,560 to the Senate Democrat fundraising arm, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

  9. Re: Tim Walz / Alex Soros photos

Alex Soros is, of course, George Soros’s son. Now Tim Walz visits Soros in Soros’s magnificent NYC home and has his photo taken with Soros multiple times.

    https://nypost.com/2024/09/25/us-news/alex-soros-hosts-tim-walz-in-his-fancy-nyc-home/

Is this wise for Harris/Walz? Was there a quid pro quo? Was any needed?

Extra Credit: Alex Soros is now married to Huma Abedin, better known as ex-wife of Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and a longtime aide to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

    Follow the connections!

  10. All clear in central NC from the storm, but western NC has big problems. I saw a video of a large shipping container floating through Asheville, and the dam at Lake Lure is at risk of failure.

  11. All this talk of hurricanes is making me homesick for Florida. 🙂

(Yes, I know hurricanes can be serious business. I’m a veteran of Hurricanes Donna (1960) and Dora (1964), which were both Cat 4 and killed people.)

  12. Something like 40 people dead in this one so far, and people stranded on a hospital roof in east Tennessee, huxley.

I will say that Florida knows how to do emergency rescue and recovery of power and essential infrastructure. They are the pros.

I have tried to reach a friend in western NC without success. All roads are closed and many people have lost power and cell phone service.

  13. Kate:

A big difference from the 60s is that today’s Southeast and Caribbean are much more densely populated. So hurricanes are much more likely to run up big tolls in lives and property damage.

One of my most vivid childhood memories was the eye of Hurricane Donna passing right over our house in Ormond Beach. We were huddled under the dining room table playing parcheesi or napping. Then suddenly that night … all the howling winds stopped.

Mom knew it was the eye and not the end of the storm. However, she allowed us outside for a few minutes to gaze into the strange dark silence. Then she rushed us back in and back under the table.

In the morning we discovered Donna had broken our neighbor’s 30 ft pine tree in two and it had crashed down upon our Florida room.

Hurricane Donna wreaked havoc all the way up to New England.

  14. The South has its history of storms and floods.
    _____________________________________

The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in the history of the United States, with 27,000 square miles (70,000 km2) inundated in depths of up to 30 feet (9 m) over the course of several months in early 1927. The period cost of the damage has been estimated to be between $246 million and $1 billion, which ranges from $4.2–$17.3 billion in 2023 dollars

About 500 people died and over 630,000 people were directly affected; 94% of those affected lived in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana, especially in the Mississippi Delta region.

    _____________________________________

Here’s Randy Newman’s immortal tribute to that flood. For me he has never written a more moving song:
    _______________________________

What has happened down here is the wind have changed
Clouds roll in from the north and it start to rain
Rained real hard and it rained for a real long time
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline

River rose all day, the river rose all night
Some people got lost in the flood, some people got away alright
River have busted through clear down to Plaquemine
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline

    Louisiana, Louisiana
They’re tryin’ to wash us away
They’re tryin’ to wash us away

    –Randy Newman, “Louisiana 1927”

  15. Except for a couple years I lived in Florida and Louisiana from 1960-1978. I don’t mean to be blasé but hurricanes are part of the deal.

You deal with them when you have to.

    What do other people do?

  16. I have trouble understanding how a decent, intelligent, well-informed person could vote for Harris, after living through three plus years of Biden-Harris.

  17. huxley, I have a book about that Mississippi flood, “Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America,” by John M. Barry.

I always wonder, when there is flooding on the Big Muddy, whether it will finally break the defenses and head straight down the Atchafalaya.
