So, what about cellphones on airplanes? — 14 Comments

  1. TSA is not going to ban cells and laptops on airplanes. The pager attack was a rare zero-day exploit.

Plus the Deep State depends on wifi/computer access during all their heavy carbon-emitting jet-setting around.

    Priorities.

  2. Have been on plenty of planes in the past—mostly jumping out of them so I don’t know what all the security is now. Surely they have already considered explosives in phones, lappies, and such. Shoe bomber made it into plane but his attempt failed.

This may hurt China the most, e.g.:

Chechen warlord accuses Elon Musk of ‘remotely disabling’ his Cybertruck

Have already seen talk about the Chinese shutting down their EVs if they want to pressure a country. I cut China a lot of slack, but wouldn’t own any of their EVs, and nor any of their electronics if I can avoid them…

  3. Yeah, Ramzan didn’t act very smart by claiming Elon gave him that Cybertruck.
    Now he says:

Kadyrov repeated his claim earlierthis week as he lamented that the high-tech vehicle had to be towed from the battlefield, saying: “What Elon Musk did was not nice. He gives expensive gifts from the heart and then remotely switches them off.”

They have two other Tesla trucks—also with mounted machine guns, but they’re still working…at least until Ramzan says Elon gave them to him also.

Using EVs on a battle field is probably not smart either, but I suspect that Ramzan’s troops are there to force the Russian troops into meat-assaults…

  4. Also why is the pic with english lettering not cyrillic and dated in 95 at the time of the first chechen war before his father was even in charge

    Is cnn that stupid

  5. Another problem with banning cell phones on flights is that they are now routinely used for electronic boarding passes. Of course they could be required to be turned off. But then there are iPads and other devices that people want to use on the flight.

A few years ago I had a laptop with a bulging battery that I didn’t notice for some time, and probably took it with me on numerous flights. I only noticed when the keyboard and trackpad started acting up. I took it to our tech support and they said to replace it ASAP. Apparently the TSA doesn’t look for that hazard, but I survived to tell the story.

  6. I know it’s not going to happen but a part of me wishes that not only would cell phones be banned on airplanes they would be banned period. For all the wonderful things they can do, it just seems to me the world was a better place without them. Now get off my lawn!

  7. 2 ideas not yet mentioned, besides the fireproof bag Neo did mention:
    1) if it is satisfactory to let travelers have and use their phone before and after flights but not during flight, provide collapsible plastic bags with a vacuum air extraction port, so the bag shrinks around the phone, there is no or little air around it to continue a battery heat started fire. [Cheaper than fireproof bag material? Or combine the two ideas?]

    2) for situation where an electrical signal or phone call is needed to trigger an explosion, use those gray plastic electrostatic bags to keep the signal from getting through to the phone receiver [if this idea has limits of its effectiveness, I welcome clarifications from someone who knows this area better than I do. UHF electronics have some spooky “penetration” characteristics vs. lower frequency devices/operations.]

  8. Gregory Harper at 6:56:
My thoughts exactly. I have a flip phone, but only because pay phones are no longer available.

  9. I know a little about aircraft baggage holds: we tried to ship our dog back from Lima on American Airlines. She was placed in a hold that was not pressurized and arrived dead. AA made a monetary settlement that allowed us to purchase another dog, who turned out to be the best dog we ever owned.

I also know a little about that ValuJet fire: a friend of mine was married to one of the pilots. If I understand the story correctly, he met the widow of another crew member at a support group meeting and they later married. Weird how that works out sometimes.
