The Democratic National Convention began today

I won’t be watching. Speeches – particularly from the left, but speeches in general – are not my cup of tea. I’m not a glutton for punishment, although I usually watch some excerpts.

But there’s plenty of coverage all over the place – for example, this, this, this, this, this, and this. You can talk about any of it – or anything about the convention – in this thread.

A lot of people have been reminiscing about the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, marked by violence in the streets, the crackdown by police, and the demonstrators’ chant of “the whole world is watching.” I recall being one of those people watching, too. I also remember what a strange year it was, because Lyndon Johnson had said he wasn’t running, and that left the field open for Hubert Humphrey to be nominated.

And I was distracted by stress in my personal life, although that stress was caused by the political. I had just been on the west coast saying goodbye to my boyfriend, who was being shipped out to Vietnam (I’ve written about that at length in this post). I had stayed out west for a big wedding, and by the time of the Democratic Convention I’d only been back home for a few days. So the whole time was sad and frightening for me for a host of reasons.

  1. I’m right down the street. Could get interesting. Not a lot of people out and about. Lots of heavily armed security roaming around.

  7. I saw a commercial where shot up troopies say ” home” about a dozen times, you could have substituted ” the world”, some things never change.

    Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

  10. Important to keep in mind that the intended audience for the DNC is not us. It’s not moderates, independents, or low information voters.

    It’s for the true believers who will be harvesting and counting the ballots in the swing states, and in the mainstream media and tech companies. They are being assured that every dream they are working for is what they will get when these people are elected, and nothing they do to get these people to 270 Electoral College votes will be punished.

  11. I don’t have cable,so I read the Fox website.
    During the Republican Convention, I watched part of it on NTD News, which has a broadcast channel in my area.
    They are pretty good. The only bad thing about NTD News is they have strong ties to the Chinese Falun Gong religious group so that comes up in their adds and some segments. ( They are very anti – CCP )

    The Harris effort is so disorganized that they failed to edit the party platform. It refers to President Biden’s second term repeatedly.

    ”Repeatedly” is, if anything, an understatement. I downloaded the ’24 Democratic Party Platform. There are 19 references to Biden’s “second term,” with 1 reference to Trump’s “second term.”

    Look at the bright side. At least the ’24 Democratic Party Platform didn’t refer to Obama’s “fourth term.” 🙂

    Increasingly, the left will hammer down any ‘nail’ that sticks up. Look to Canadian Jordan Peterson and to the prosecution and imprisonment of thousands in the UK for a preview.

    I know the Chicago police think they’ve got it handled, but the pro-Palis seem more fanatical than the 1968 New Left.

    No doubt better funded too.

  21. 1968 was my first year of being an airline pilot. I was on reserve but got called out frequently. I flew into Baltimore when it was aflame. Same with the riots and fires in South LA. Had layovers in hotels with security armed with machine guns and German Shepherds. Tense times.

    An unpopular war, the death of Martin Luther King, and the death of RFK all combined to incite angry riots. The DNC riots in Chicago sparked a revulsion among the “silent majority” that elected Richard Nixon in some part because he promised to maintain law and order.

    The protests could be a big loser for the Dems this year. However, the first day was a nothingburger as far as I can tell.

  23. Apparently Old Joe didn’t come on stage until about 11:30 last night. His speech was reportedly not too bad, for him, but it was filled with the usual lies about Trump (fine people, suckers and losers, etc.). The he apparently left for a vacation in California, because he’s been working so hard, evidently.
