Ilhan Omar wins her primary
I expected Omar’s victory. It’s just another sign of the times – and not an encouraging one. Here’s an analysis:
But a few factors worked in Omar’s favor this time. She again outraised [her opponent] Samuels by a lot, but this time also outspent him, an apparent acknowledgment of the need to work to ensure an upset win didn’t happen. Just as significantly, AIPAC stayed out of her primary.
Progressives can breathe a sigh of relief with her win, but Samuels did still manage to win about 43 percent of the vote, a significant share for a primary challenger who was well outraised and spent.
I’m assuming that AIPAC stayed out of the race because it wanted to focus on the primaries where it thought it had a very good chance to win: those involving Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman, who were both pushed out of the running. All of these district are so deep blue that the Democrat who wins the primary almost certainly will be the winner in the election.
For what it’s worth.

Minnesota has imported a new electorate. I don’t know enough Somalis to know how widespread anti-Semitism is among them. But they are never not going to vote for one of their own.
Omar represents a white-majority constituency and Somalis account for about 2% of the population of greater Minneapolis.
That was closer than had been predicted. I wonder if AIPAC would have stayed out had they known her opponent would get 43%.
@Art Deco:Omar represents a white-majority constituency and Somalis account for about 2% of the population of greater Minneapolis.
Thank you for those stats from 20,000 feet up. I spent several years living in that area ten years ago and there are any number of Minnesotans online who can tell you what’s going on with them currently. Greater Minneapolis is a huge area and Somalis are not evenly sprinkled through it, there are areas and niches that they dominate completely, giving them influence that is out of proportion to their percentage of the state or district population.
This is NOT good news for the progressives.
Regarding outspending her opponent, I wish there were some reliable way to cut off contributions from overseas, and even from out of state. Ilhan Omar is, in my estimation, high on the list of possible recipients of foreign campaign funds.
Minnesota is not nice.

Congressional districts have populations of about 700,000. Even if your Somalis were entirely concentrated in hers, they would not form more than a single-digit percentage therein.
“Terrorists can breathe a sigh of relief with her win…”
There, fixed it.
EBT and other redistributive schemes means that democracy dies in plain darkness. The presence of emoluments in politics means that our nation is not our own. Then there are the steering mechanisms, published influencers, phobias for profit, etc. Democracy is not a viable form of governance without a suitable Constitution to mitigate authoritarian progress.
Why would anyone not believe her re-election was laced through and through with fraud.
Some info, possible true, about AIPAC sitting this one out https://tinyurl.com/bdd832eu
From what I have read, Omar’s district includes an area of upscale neighborhoods with a lot of Jacobin Jews many of whom voted for her. Her (former?) comms director is a Jew. They will be eaten last, if they are lucky.
West TX Intermediate Crude:
I see nothing there about the percentage of Jews in the district, but I can almost guarantee that her support among Jews is not her strength, although of course there are some individuals who support her. In fact, my guess is that it’s the Jews in her district who probably voted for Samuels in higher percentages than other groups in the district.
