Friday roundup
(1) An appeals court is blocking Biden’s student loan program – for now.
(2) In no surprise at all, the World Court declares Israel’s “occupation” illegal:
In a conclusive and unambiguous decision, the International Court of Justice declared in a non-binding ruling Friday that Israel’s 56-year long rule in “the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967” is “illegal,” and that it is obligated to bring its presence in that territory to an end “as rapidly as possible.”
“Non-binding” but excellent for anti-Israel propaganda.
(3) The polls are good for Trump, for what it’s worth.
(4) There’s increased evidence that Trump’s would-be assassin Crooks was an equal-opportunity killer and that Trump was a target of convenience. Crooks wasn’t averse to tracking Biden – and perhaps trying to kill him? Who knows – and we may never know – but my leading theory has been almost from the start that Crooks was mostly in the mold of the Las Vegas mass murderer and of Oswald: someone who felt superior and yet obscure, and wanted to make his mark as a master killer.
(5) Here’s Caroline Glick on Israeli and US parallels. She’s spoken and written of this before. But this is a more recent look in light of the Trump assassination attempt:
I have seen reports that Crooks was focusing on Biden as well as Trump. Of course if he had gone after Biden I don’t think he would have gotten within a mile of him. However it is a good thing he did not try to shoot Biden. If he had been arrested for trying to do so can you imagine the MSM response? He would have been blamed on Trump personally and Republicans in general. He would have proclaimed Trump’s personal assassin; a murderous MAGA killer. They would have demanded that Trump be indicted for murder. A chorus of pundits would have been screaming for banning all guns.
I clicked through the link to click through the link to click through the link to the actual poll. Trump is still not ahead outside the margin of error in the battleground states, which is 2.7% for the likely voter sample they used. (They don’t quote results to the tenth of point, so having Trump up by 3% could mean 2.5% – 3.4% and so we have no way to tell it’s not more that 2.7%.) And that 2%-age point shift could simply be noise.
Oswald targeted walker before kennedy but that doesnt mean he was a rightist
Miguel cervantes:
I’m referring to the fact that there’s no evidence that Oswald had an extra-special animus towards JFK. He was a generally hostile Communist, however. He wanted to make his mark and never had. Just a few days before the JFK assassination, he discovered the motorcade route would give him a golden opportunity and devised his plan.
The narrative via strategic leaks is Trumps would-be assassin Crooks was an equal-opportunity killer.
Same as the Las Vegas shooter was not a Bernie Bro,
Or the crazy that targeted the gop softball game was not a Bernie Bro.
They were all solo killers with unknown motives.
As I posted a couple of days ago, RCP has state by state results based on an average of many polls (so much smaller margin of error). The only one of the battleground states plausibly within the MoE is Michigan.
But the more meaningful (in my opinion) comparison is the swing from 2020. It’s 9-10 points in these states from Biden to Trump. That’s as close to an apples-to-apples comparison as you can get.
“Oswald targeted walker before kennedy but that doesnt mean he was a rightist”
Walker was a rightist so it makes it less likely Oswald was a rightist. Which was highly unlikely in the first place since he defected to Russia.
The irony is that many on the right today now embrace the “CIA did it” theory for the hit on JFK due to their understandable contempt for today’s CIA. But at the time it was an attempt by the left to deflect from the fact that lone wolf or not, Oswald was a leftist or at least looked a lot like one. As well as the alleged “climate of hate” in Dallas.
Lee Smith in Tablet Mag offers “Who Normalized Political Violence in America?” which goes nicely alongside Caroline Glick’s video: https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/news/articles/who-normalized-political-violence-america
Be concerned. Be very, very concerned.
FOAF:
I bet most people today don’t know Oswald was a committed leftist, much less that he was a Communist.
I read today at Ace’s that a third of Democrats think the Trump assassination attempt was staged.
Jimmy, in his second paragraph, brings up a good point. The fellow whose videos I linked to a day ago also emphasizes the difference between now and at election day 2020 in the overall polling.
I know, polling=shadowy results at best, long time until November, etc.
But something has the Democrats spooked.
Well a 1/3 were 9-11 denialist werent they

John Hinckley, who shot Ronald Reagan, and Arthur Bremer, who shot George Wallace, were equal opportunity assassins.
Hinckley had previously considered Jimmy Carter and Bremer, Richard Nixon, as their targets.
apparently the secret service didn’t have a drone but he did,

The government wants us to believe that Crooks was an “equal opportunity assassin” but I don’t know whether to believe them. We do have the testimony of Crooks’s high school friend who said that Crooks ridiculed his support for Trump. I don’t think Crooks would have tried to kill Biden, but then he probably wouldn’t have had much chance to. Biden’s appearances have always had tighter security and smaller attendance than Trump’s.
It is true that many American assassins were looking for fame. Sometimes they went looking for a chance to assassinate someone, and sometimes the opportunity fell into their laps. Were they politically or ideologically motivated? Some had convictions, but most weren’t thinking in conventional binary terms: kill the R to benefit the D or kill the D to benefit the R. People with strong loyalties to one of the two main parties work within the party and don’t start shooting from rooftops … at least not yet.
The latest news was that Crooks had two or three encoded foreign internet accounts. Maybe we’ll find out more when they’re decrypted. Maybe we won’t. Maybe they don’t exist.
@Abraxas:The latest news was that Crooks had two or three encoded foreign internet accounts.
What are these “accounts” supposed to be? I tried looking in news articles, since bloggers are generally linking each other in games of telephone on this topic, and only found:
CBS News:The briefers told lawmakers they are still attempting to access three foreign encrypted platforms that Crooks used on his cellphone, multiple sources told CBS News.
Axios:The shooter used three encrypted platforms in Germany, New Zealand and Belgium…The FBI has served legal processes on 30 companies and is waiting on returns from 18 of those companies, including foreign encrypted applications.
Sounds like they mean “accounts” with things like Discord or ProtonMail, which I don’t believe are located in any of those countries.
It keeps getting worse.

Just to underscore how crazy this all is, I was once prevented flying MY OWN drone off of the beach at Mar-a-Lago by USSS because my father was inside the house…
Now we have one literally scouting his speech!!! ? https://t.co/M3BAENqT4f

Re: Secret Service / Trump
I’ve been trawling a lot of YouTubes interviewing guys with substantial sniper/special forces/SS experience.
Some are so horrified that they just can’t believe Crooks managed it without inside help. That’s a question I won’t dismiss just because Hanlon told me to.

neo @ 5:26pm,
Regarding the 1/3 of Democrats who believe the assassination attempt was staged by Trump;
that was the point I was trying to make here: https://www.thenewneo.com/2024/07/19/open-thread-7-19-24-2/#comment-2751238
If Crooks were the world’s most talented marksman and Trump the world’s most gifted contortionist there is no way to stage the timing of a shot like that to graze Trump’s ear; setting up Trump’s iconic, defiant response and the images that are driving Dems crazy.
Yet 1/3 of Democrats believe it was staged because it seems too good to be possible. Sometimes crazy, absolutely crazy, unbelievable things happen. This has nothing to do with whether Crooks should have been there, or been able to take the shot, or if Trump should have been on the stage when the SS knew there was a possible threat. I’m solely focusing on the shot and Trump’s reaction. So unbelievably perfect it absolutely looks staged. But it could not have been staged.
Yet, many people will go to their graves believing it was staged. It’s the same point you often make about the Kennedy assassination; it is possible a lone nut job got three shots off at a President whose motorcade took a slow turn in front of the office building where the nut job randomly took a job weeks before.
It doesn’t seem possible, but the fact it doesn’t seem possible should not eliminate the possibility that it happened. Today, many Trump haters are looking at how amazingly good Trump performed throughout the incident and the fact that the man they hate literally dodged a bullet and, rather than believe it possible for circumstance to put a man in that position, and for a man to react as Trump did, they will convince themselves it was the most impossible staged event in human history.

The World Court rewards Hamasidal affirmative actions of murder, rape, rape-rape, torture-torture, and abduction. Social justice anywhere is injustice everywhere. #HateLovesAbortion

Ref (4) – I don’t know much about drones, but after seeing what Ukraine has done to Russian tanks with drones I doubt that even a Presidential state car would be safe.
Didn’t the Secret Service have Drone jammers covering the area of Trump’s speech? Probably don’t even use them around Biden.
Crooks had explosives in his car so he wasn’t far from being able to create a bomb to drop from a drone or a suicide drone. Agencies like the FBI & Secret Service seem to be far behind times…
A whole lot of speculation goes a long way.
What explosives did Crooks have or make into his devices?
High explosives (military munitions) are not gunpowder, or anfo. IIRC home made or home making HE is a very dangerous hobby.
The World Court edict against Israel does indeed seem like a bit of an escalation. It makes for an interesting contrast against the apparent relative quiet surrounding the Turkish occupation of northern Cyprus, which just touched its fiftieth anniversary.
[Interesting that my browser suggests that I should be capitalizing ‘northern’ here, but that is quite against my intent as it would make it appear as if I’m talking about the Turkish “republic” of, etc., which I will not do.]
Why has not Israel simply annexed the territories covered by the settlements? Then it wouldn’t be an “occupation” any more, right? Would that be a possible response to this World Court pronouncement?
So the World Court is now inventing law.
higher level sorcery at this point,
that clearly is not the intention, at some point Arabs decided the presence of any misrashrakum, I believe that is the name for any non Moslem on Arab land is just haram,
