  1. I want my border collies on the couch. On the bed and chairs too. They have free run of the house. They are my pals, they make me happy, and I want them next or near to me.

Of course sometimes they go off by themselves, into another room. A border collie trait — they need their alone time. My theory on this: they think so much that their brain circuits get overheated and they need to go somewhere and cool off.

  2. If you really, truly love ’em buy ’em some sheep (or, and this might be a tad easier, open up a day-care center at home)….

In other news, here’s a stunner (from Planet “Alpha Believe-All-Women”:
“Harvey Weinstein’s felony sex crime conviction overturned by NY’s highest court”—
    https://nypost.com/2024/04/25/us-news/harvey-weinsteins-felony-sex-crime-charges-overturned-by-nys-highest-court/

  3. Telling our dog to stay off something is like telling Joe Biden not to lie or sniff girls.

But Sparky is much cuter when he ignores you.

  4. Barry M., the NY highest court found that testimony about other alleged offenses not related to the one on trial had been allowed, and has remanded the case for a new trial. Surely this speaks to, or ought to speak to, the current Trump “hush money” trial, in which a transcript of the Access Hollywood tape has been entered into evidence. It has no direct bearing on the case.

  5. But Kate, we all know that “The process is the punishment”(TM) and even were Trump to be acquitted (as he should be—the trial should not even be happening)…the usual—global—suspects will be screaming and wailing from the rooftops, gnashing their miserable teeth and tearing out their stringy hair, that “HE GOT OFF ON A TECHNICALITY!!”
(And this will be believed by ALL those seething, virtuous believers who so dearly wish to believe it…alas.)

  6. More Democratic Junta “creativity” in AZ:
    “THE ARIZONA INDICTMENT”—
    https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2024/04/the-arizona-indictment.php
    Key grafs:

…I asked my friend Andrew McCarthy to comment on the indictment. This is what he had to say:

I think it’s revisionist history and tells half a story. In real time, January 2021, nobody believed the cobbling together of Trump electors in contested states was a coup effort. It was a contingency: If Trump had prevailed in any of his unlikely challenges, the Trump electors could be swapped in for the prior Biden elector slates.

I think whatever documents they executed were with that understanding. No one thought those slates would be operative unless Trump prevailed in state court or the state legislature.

I’ve always thought this was a big tell: If the so-called fake electors scheme was a crime, why has Smith not indicted it?

  7. My parents had a black lab that would climb on the couch and rearrange the pillows to her liking. She had a perfectly good dog bed in the same room, but she perfered the couch.

  8. Jeez, American Justice never ends for some…commenter Barry Meislin’s pointer to “Harvey Weinstein’s felony sex crime conviction overturned” – tho he gets to remain in prison because of another ‘Trumped-up’ mob rule #MeToo conviction. Oh, apparently, he’ll also have to go thru ANOTHER trial—a NEW #MeToo trial – trials are so much fun, Lucky Harvey /sarc.

Sorry Hollywood actresses, but giving up a PoP doesn’t earn you a lifetime of starring rolls.

    Time for another:

‘There were five forms of governance that migrated from theory to reality in the 20th Century: Socialism, Communism, Fascism, Nazism and Progressivism. The common denominator among them was unprecedented control and regulation by the State over human activity. It is delusional to think that the Totalitarian impulse expired with the 20th Century.’ – E. Nuff Said

  9. I love the way some dogs think. It is great. They certainly have their own logic. A while back, some scientists testing dogs discovered that dogs lie. Not like “lie down”, but that dogs are willing to put one over on us to get their way.

I had a friend who lived with his parents and he had a lab. His parents did not want the lab on the couch, but my friend didn’t care. If his parents weren’t home, the lab would get on the couch, but if they drove up, she would hop off the couch, settle on the floor and pretend to be asleep. When they walked in, she would make a big show of getting up and stretching and then go greet them. It was very funny.

I have a dog who my husband does not want in the kitchen. She has translated this into “As long as I have one paw NOT in the kitchen, I am technically NOT “in” the kitchen.” If you catch her in the kitchen (there is a side lite next to the door she likes to look out), she will back up until she gets one paw out of the kitchen. Love to watch that.

I had a lab many years ago who knew she was not allowed to eat food that I did not specifically give her in her bowl. Not like that stopped her — she was a lab, after all. One time I was walking her and she found a chicken leg on the ground and picked it up, but tried to hide it from me by turning her head away from me and looking down. It was hard not to laugh while I got it away from her.

Another time, she sneaked into the kitchen while I was in the shower and swiped a pound bag of Hershey’s Kisses. I had an x-pen around the living room and within that, a small x-pen I would park her in when I left the house, or took a shower. She got under or over both of the x-pens and got into the kitchen. Then, went back into her smaller x-pen and pretended to have been asleep the whole time. But I found the empty Hershey’s bag on the floor. No trace of any little bits of the foil wrapping on the kisses. Fortuitously, her regular vet was open and we went there, where they forced emesis on her. The vet laughed SO HARD over her sparkly vomit.

    I love dogs.

  10. Judge has told Trump to not miss any time in court—basically telling him to stay in New York: Donald Trump Plans Historic Rallies in Bronx, Madison Square Garden: ‘Good Chance of Winning’ New York

Former President Donald Trump stuck to campaign messaging Thursday before walking into his business records trial by announcing plans to hold historic rallies in the Bronx and at Madison Square Garden.

The last time the Bronx was the center of a Republican presidential campaign was in 1984 when Ronald Reagan won by a landslide.

“I think we have a good chance of winning here and we’re gonna give it a big plan,” Trump said about New York State. “We’re going to the South Bronx to do a rally.”

“We’re going to be doing a rally at Madison Square Garden, we believe,” Trump added.

  11. Dogs are the bosses we just live there

    As it should be . . . .

Barry Meislin: I take my BCs to a nearby farm and train them on sheep. We also compete in sheepherding trials (competitions).

  12. Iranian Journalist Comes Out Against The Demand To End The Gaza War Before It Has Been Decided, Attacks Hamas: No Organization Has The Right To Kill At Will:

    • Those Who Demand A Speedy End To The War Forget That Defeating Armed Organizations Is A Lengthy Affair

    • British and European pundits are also ‘concerned’ about the length of the Gaza war and urge unspecified action to shorten it. They forget that fighting armed groups that wish to impose their agenda by ‘irregular warfare’ – to put it in a politically correct manner as the BBC does – cannot be conceived in terms of a short theatrical sketch.

    • Claiming to be a ‘freedom fighter’ shouldn’t mean a license to kill at will. Even the ‘oppressed’ have certain duties and must observe some rules while, as history has shown, the tyranny of the underdog could be as deadly as that of the oppressor…

    • No one denies that for over seven decades Palestinians have suffered a great deal. But is the way to end or a least alleviate their suffering to exempt their self-imposed political organizations from observing a minimum of ethical rules even if their adversary didn’t always reciprocate? Treating the Palestinian issue as if it were an exception to all rules has done great harm to Palestinians. They have become the first people in history to have four generations frozen in the status of refugees.

    • Does it make any sense to have refugee camps even in Gaza which was free of Israeli occupation for two decades? Or in the West Bank governed by the Palestinian Authority? Is it humane to turn being a refugee into a profession with UNWRA as the franchise holder?

    • Do those who encourage Hamas by marching in its support know what percentage of Palestinians it represents and, more importantly, whether those who do support it also approve of the 7 October razzia? The Biden administration is making a big mistake by implicitly upgrading Hamas as a legitimate partner through regional allies, thus creating the illusion that razzias like the October 7 one could still produce at least a lollipop for perpetrators.

  13. IrishOtter49

    Preaching to the choir, Karmi.

Forgive me – didn’t realize I was “Preaching”.

    Who is your target audience?

    Jeez…just a comment section of a blog.

  14. We bought a house on the Peak-to-Peak Highway in Colorado, and inherited a dog and his couch in the bargain. Charlie Brown was a shepherd-collie mix and he slept on a couch that his previous owners had trained him to use. He was lovable and friendly, but also a good protector of our property.

He lived with us for seven years before passing on at age 16. What a fine dog.

We trained his successor to use his couch. Giving a member of the family their own couch is a good thing.

  15. Oh – IrishOtter49…good. I was slow in responding to a comment in the 4/15/2024 Equality versus freedom post. Had attempted to remember a quote of Alexander Solzhenitsyn and ended up butchering it. After some searching I responded Here. See if that makes more sense than that first misquote… 🙂

  16. Sadly at least 1/3 of the general assembly is populated by these ‘freedom fighters’ take the president of rwanda as one notable example

  17. JJ, OMG, where on the Peak to Peak highway??? My family bought a house in Ward mid 60s. Finally sold it to a neighbor in Ward about 15 years ago. I wasn’t living in Colorado, my brother and mother no longer using it. But many good memories from childhood through college of being there on weekends and fishing and hiking in the Indian Peaks rec area.

  18. NASA administrator Bill Nelson demonstrates his incompetence by bizarrely claiming that the far side of the moon is always dark…

Oh dear lord, if you ever wondered if these kinds of appointments are mostly political, well, there’s your answer.

  19. Karmi:

“Preaching to the choir” is just a figure of speech. I’m the choir. I’m the target audience. Just an admittedly obtuse way of saying I agree with you.

    So, no worries.

  20. IrishOtter49 – OK great! Thought maybe my original comment had needed to be in blockquotes instead of bullets. 🙂

  21. Now we now why musk is stealjng the march like ben bovas rakish hero dan hamilton randolph

  22. Can dogs manipulative us? NO! I mean, sometimes, maybe, perhaps…
    _____________________________

As humans adapted to their surroundings, dogs followed. Eventually, dogs became more sophisticated as they were bred to meet the lifestyles of their owners…

“The most remarkable among dogs’ behavioral adaptations, as a result of selection during domestication, is their ability to read and use human communication in ways that other animals cannot,” the PNAS study states.

Analyzed behavioral data also suggests that dogs raise their inner eyebrows more frequently and with a higher intensity than wolves do. The researchers believe dogs with these “puppy dog eyes” were preferential to humans and therefore more highly selected….

The PNAS study also suggests that humans prefer dogs that show paedomorphic (infant-like) anatomical features.

These features can consist of a bigger forehead, larger eyes, and more. This observation came after people were asked to select pictures presenting dog or cat faces that had more or less paedomorphic features.

“The movement makes the eyes appear bigger, hence more infant-like and potentially more appealing,” the study adds. This expression resembles sadness, and for humans, this triggers a nurturing response.

Imagine a dog being selected from a shelter. The study highlights that dogs in this situation may produce this facial movement more frequently, potentially giving them a selection advantage.

  23. Physics Guy, we lived between Central City and Rollinsville from 1970 to 1977. Our kids went to school in Nederland.

It was a cool place. Few neighbors, a well and septic, a Franklin stove, and Mount Thorodin nearby for rock climbing. No TV – our kids learned to entertain themselves. It was the simple life.

I only had to go to the airport, 45 miles away in Denver, five times a month to fly my schedule. It worked out well except for the occasional big snowstorm. 🙁

We passed through Ward many times on our way to Estes Park to visit my family. And my son and I
did a lot of hiking and climbing in the Indian Peaks. So, we may have rubbed shoulders at some point and not known we would rub shoulders on a blog many years hence. Karma! 🙂

  24. J.J. and Physicguy, My Dad built a Cabin off the Peak to Peak road, many years ago. He had to sell it when my Mom wouldn’t go there.
I would have loved to have inherited it, but it was long gone by the time they Passed.
We live just N. of Longmont now.

  25. Someone else mentioned it earlier, but Alan Ritchson, this year’s Jack Reacher character — strong, silent, brilliant ex-military cop, ever ready to do battle against evil, while searching for the small town origins of the blues — has shown himself to be a gracious Christian who can see both sides of the issues in these troubled, polarizing times:

Darn. I’d started liking Ritchson as a return to old heroic Hollywood form. I suspect he has Bud-Lited himself and his projects into woke-brokedom.

Likewise I was looking forward to him in the new Guy Ritchie film, “Ungentlemanly Warfare.”

That’s the way the entertainment crumbles.

  26. Mike Plaiss, unfortunately the caption added to the photo file is equally uninformed: What the Earth looks like from the far side of the moon.
Pretty sure you’d never see the Earth from there; but I’m neither a NASA administrator nor a caption writer for Google Images, so who knows.

  27. Huxley & Miguel, for some reason that brings to mind the song Don’t You Roll Those Bloodshot Eyes at Me. I first heard this song on a Sea Train album, so that’s the version that will be stuck in my head for the next few days.
