McConnell does an Emily Litella and says “never mind” on the border bill
In a dramatic turnaround, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell recommended to GOP senators in a closed-door meeting that they vote against the first procedural vote Wednesday, according to two people familiar with the meeting who were not authorized to talk publicly about it and spoke anonymously.
It came just hours after the Kentucky Republican had urged colleagues on the Senate floor that “it’s now time for Congress to take action.” But McConnell has struggled to marshal his conference to support the package of $118 billion package of border enforcement policy and funding for Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies.
That’s the AP, so it calls the bill a “border enforcement” bill although it might rightly be called the opposite. No matter what it’s called, what is going on in McConnell’s brain? Is he really stepping back from this? Is it only because it became clear it had a terrible response from GOP voters (that’s not usually enough to do it), or is it just because the House was absolutely not going to support it?

What else might we expect from one of the primary political architects of the Uni-Party?

sdferr @5:42pm,
Never let a crisis go to waste. And if there is no crisis to exploit; make one!
A commenter at Althouse, Leland, theorized that the purpose of the bill was tie Trump’s hands should he, by some miracle, be allowed to win in November. Courts would use the legislation to stop any attempts to reduce the number of illegals below 5000/day.
or as Dana Loesch suggested almost tongue in cheek, space out the border guards so they can’t identify the 5000 to trigger the emergency, there is no level they won’t stoop too, now mannikin lankford who negotiated with foghorn manchin and the wiccan synema is too easy a mark, as his performance re warner in the whole Russian miasma proved,
There’s always the possiblity that some House Republicans would defect and vote for the bill. Maybe McConnell found out that his own Senate Republicans wouldn’t vote for the bill, maybe key senators whose votes he needs for other things.
Ronna is stepping down after South Carolina, her work here is done,
I figure that McConnell didn’t actually read the bill, but just trusted Schumer, assuming quite reasonably that nobody could be a bigger sleazebag than himself!!
“deep down they know it’s his [McConnell’s] fault, that he’s really not up to the job anymore, and it’s probably time for him to move on”
Apart from all the politics, I have heard that McConnell is in much the same physical/mental shape as Biden.
Ted Cruz opined on Hannity tonight that the bill was purposely written by Schumer to be rejected by the House. That way, Biden and the Dems can claim that the border would be secure, but those awful MAGA Republicans sided with Donald Trump. Result: They can claim the border is open because of Trump.
The Dems think they’re playing three-dimensional chess. I think the video of the illegals beating up the cops in New York City is overwhelming their chicanery. People are angry and want the border closed now. No amount of political boon doggery is going to make people think Biden has had his hands tied when it comes to closing the border.

Since the time between a Babylon Bee story and a confirming news report is now about 2 days ….

The net effect of all of this is going to be that people who were opposed to illegal immigration, but OK with legal immigration are going to become hardened opponents of any type of immigration. That was me 20 years ago before I realized how utterly corrupt the whole system surrounding immigration was. The government, the deep state, both political parties, and every important institution in the country are all on the same side. If you were to ask what the proper number of immigrants that we should admit every might be, their answer is always “MOAR!!!”
Trump should show the graph of illegal immigration over time and administrations at every rally. Then say “Maybe you should ask Obama and Biden to explain this curve to you! I bet you they’ll say it was my fault, but just ask them to explain how that works!”
Follow the money! It should not be too hard to keep an eye on these four guys for a year. You should start to see the payoff come up about that time. Cash baby, or maybe just a scholarship for their kid(s) at Stanford or such. It’s there, make no doubt about it–the deal is done and these four guys are the beneficiaries of fiscal payoffs somewhere.
