Crumbley’s mother found guilty of manslaughter
[NOTE: I’m in a hurry at the moment so this post will be short, but I may revisit this in the not-too-distant future.]
This must be one of the worst legal decisions I’ve ever seen:
Jennifer and James Crumbley are the first parents in U.S. history to stand trial for a mass shooting. Their son, Ethan Crumbley, pled guilty to murder and terrorism in 2023 for the Nov. 30, 2021, shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan that left four students dead and seven others injured. …
Jennifer Crumbley and her husband, James Crumbley, were each charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting. Mr. Crumbley is being tried separately.
On Tuesday, Jennifer learned her fate: She was found guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter. …
While Crumbley’s defense team argued that she was innocent because she didn’t know her son was planning the school shooting and therefore shouldn’t be held accountable for his crimes, the prosecution argued that she ignored Ethan’s cries for help — and that the 15-year-old committed the shooting with a gun the Crumbleys alleged bought for him as a gift.
I have written four previous posts on the Crumbley case. Please take a look. I believe they cover most of the issues here.
“one of the worst legal decisions I’ve ever seen…”
Yet.
Give some of the Trump kangaroo courts time…it’ll be “hold my beer.”
Perfect storm. Bad prosecutor, bad judges, bad jurors.
It seems that Michigan is becoming our Australia, where ALL individual gun ownership was declared illegal several years ago. Tough Aussies, right? Milquetoasts, more likely.
Now we have the Crumbleys, sentenced against law and reason, for being inattentive parents of a screwed-up sociopathic kid. Can’t fix sociopathy, no way, no how.
I read all of Neo’s prior posts in 2021. Thanks, Neo.
I have zero faith that preventive counseling of a potential future mass murderer would have changed anything except a fatter wallet for the counselor/therapist.
Australia locked itself down tight in COVID fear: No entrance, no exit under any circumstances.
I expect the MI sheep have been so sheepishly indoctrinated by Gov. Whitmer’s lunacy.
Tyranny requires generalized fear.
To which political party do they belong? The implication is obvious if they vote republican.
Of course this ruling sends another message, any parent who gives their dependent a firearm is now criminally liable for any illegal use of that firearm by their dependent.
Currently this ruling only applies to Michigan residents but we can be absolutely certain that the left will do their best to implement it nationwide.
If that eventuates, the parents of someone like Kyle Rittenhouse, then 17… will also face imprisonment.
Of course, it will be selectively applied because some animals are more equal…
If the mother is guity then surely the school authorities who have training in evaluating children’s mental health and have the power to search the child’s belongings are guilty to an even greater degree.
Like the Sandy Hook trial of Alex Jones, its all about distracting from the failure of state authorities in preventing these tragedies.
In the case of Sandy Hook, the school districts had been allocated funds to install security doors that would have prevented the shooter going room to room, but the schools spent the money on other things.
Here its the failure of the teachers to properly evaluate the child, search their possessions (which would have found the firearm) and provide psychiatric help.
As another aside as to how bad it is, the shooter was prosecuted as an adult, but his parent was found criminally responsible for their actions – i.e. one adult was held criminally responsible for the actions of another adult.

That will be news to my boss who has at least half a dozen legal firearms, mostly pistols.
same with parkland the failure from the school board to the fbi in concealing and failing to isolate him from the students, so they decided it was his poor upbringing,
Australia fell afoul of the Port Arthur syndrome, that even John Howard, rather sturdy fellow, in other areas, surrendered on, of course we know how the authorities abused the citizens during the lockdown in scenes out of the screed about the Murdoch’s called the Paper Man
I changed my mind on my comment. But I can’t really delete it.
Yes, this is a potentially dangerous new decision. Is it really that easy for adults to tell if an adolescent is sociopathic or just sullen and withdrawn? Setting fires or torturing and dissecting small animals may be clear indications that a young person might turn into a serial killer, but such are such obvious signs apparent in school shooters?
But reading about the details of this case does make me think that there was something wrong with Jennifer Crumbley. Her reactions to events don’t appear to be those of a normal concerned parent. There’s certainly room for a civil case against the Crumbleys.
Given this principle, the entire network of illegal immigration enablers, up to and including Clinton, Obama and Biden, are guilty of involuntary manslaughter for every citizen killed by an illegal immigrant.

Good point.
Displacement is the key, here. Too much grief and anger to load onto the kid. It just slides off. More blame is unsatisfying. Other targets must be found.
Now, any parent whose kid commits a felony is liable, right?
A relation was prosecuted in the same county for vehicular manslaughter and related crimes. The defense’s most devastating witness was the prosecution’s expert. IOW, the prosecutor knew going in he had nothing. But two years of hell and a six-figure legal bill.
odds are they will try to bury this story with a pillow

The Columbine parents also had parenting issues but were never charged with anything. Maybe it’s just Michigan.
Mike K:
I’m not aware of any particular “parenting issues” in Columbine regarding the perps’ parents, and I’ve read and written about it in-depth. They were accused of all sorts of things, but I never found any substance in it – particularly for the Klebolds (his mother wrote an excellent book, by the way, which I have read).
See also this post about the common claim that mass shooters are fatherless. No evidence for it at all.
I don’t know the details of this case, but two questions stand out.
1. Will this become a standard, and if so, will Michigan prosecute parents under this standard across the board, in all urban, suburban, and rural areas?
2. What of the responsibilities of the school systems to expel kids they suspect of being a threat. Many districts are very shy about expulsions, because of reasons.
