Balancing the Israel/Palestine scale requires lies

As far back as I can remember – and since I’m pretty old these days, that’s quite far back – the MSM was interested in a particular narrative about Israel and Palestine. Let’s call it “equivalence.” Certain concepts were involved, but especially the “cycle of violence” – as though the entire thing was some sort of children’s squabble in which both sides were trading punches and neither side wanted the conflict to end.

And those were the media outlets who were relatively kind to the Israelis. There were others who put the blame squarely on the Israelis and saw Palestinians as their long-suffering victims.

To maintain such fictions it was necessary for the MSM to lie and to obscure. But the MSM was fully up to the task. Some of what reporters did was out of a combination of laziness and ignorance. Some was leftist anti-Semitism in which hatred of Jews combined with hatred of the Western world and the Enlightenment. Some was the need to cater to the Palestinians in order to preserve “access,” without which this illusion of coverage couldn’t happen. And some of the reporters have been Palestinian stringers whose sympathies were and are obviously with their fellow Palestinians and their terrorist leaders and against Israel

For example – and I know this looks like it’s from the Babylon Bee, but it’s not – here’s the latest from The NY Times:

The New York Times is defending its rehiring of a Gaza journalist who was previously exposed for praising Hitler.

The Times rehired freelance videographer Soliman Hijjy as part of its coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. In August 2022, the pro-Israel media watchdog HonestReporting shed light on Hijjy, whose work had been featured by the Times between 2018 and 2021.

HonestReporting found that Hijjy praised Adolf Hitler in a 2012 Facebook post, writing, “How great you are, Hitler” in Arabic.

In a 2018 post, Hijjy shared a photo of himself with a caption that translated to either “I’m in tune like Hitler during the holocaust” or “in a state of harmony as Hitler was during the Holocaust.” …

The Times is now standing by Hijjy.

“We reviewed problematic social media posts by Mr. Hijjy when they first came to light in 2022 and took a variety of actions to ensure he understood our concerns and could adhere to our standards if he wished to do freelance work for us in the future,” a spokesperson for the Times told FOX News Digital. “Mr. Hijjy followed those steps and has maintained high journalistic standards. He has delivered important and impartial work at great personal risk in Gaza during this conflict.”

This is beyond parody.

Most MSM reporters aren’t as obviously biased as Hijjy, but they nevertheless only feel comfortable when they can pretend that Israel is just as bad as Hamas. That’s why they were so very eager to take Hamas’ world for the hospital bombing. It was too good to not be true. And the fact that they were exposed as the liars they are will not stop them from doing it again and again, as they’ve done for decades.

Ben Shapiro writes:

The easiest moral place to stand is in the middle.

Standing in the middle is comforting. It grants you the illusion that you are being evenhanded, that you see nuance and complexity where others see black and white. It is flattering to be in the middle — no one hates your viewpoint enough to make you their opponent, and yet you get to stand apart from everyone, tut-tutting both sides.

When it comes to Israel and its terror-backing enemies, the West has, for some decades, taken precisely that position.

And those are the better reporters. The worse ones firmly take the Palestinian side.

As Shapiro writes, it’s based on lies:

The first lie is that Israel must be warned not to engage in human rights violations.

We hear this nostrum all the time: from the president of the United States, from the United Nations, from the media. The idea is that if Israel’s leadership isn’t reminded in the wake of the worst pogrom since the Holocaust, those rude Jews might carpet-bomb Gaza. The purpose of the lie is simple: to get Israel to stop defending itself at the first available opportunity. If you warn the world that Israel is likely to pursue atrocities, and then — as inevitably happens in war — something terrible happens, Israel can quickly be shoved back into the box of moral equivalence.

Voila! Status quo ante restored.

Of course, this lie is a lie. And it is a stupidly offensive lie, in the same way that it is a lie when the United Nations warns the United States about human rights violations. Israel is a professional military that abides by the rules of war. Its enemies openly cheer the death of civilians, both Israel’s and their own. By all rights, the entire political and media infrastructure ought to be using their supposed moral suasion on human rights to convince Hamas to release hostages and protect their own citizens. But, of course, there’s no real interest in that. The lie must be maintained. Israel has to be warned about human rights, because secretly, the Jews are just like Hamas.

Then there’s the second lie: that we must all remember the vaunted Peace Process …

The Peace Process is dead. It always was a fiction, but Hamas killed the last lingering remnants of that fiction and wiped its bloody sword on it.

NOTE: I’m not sure where best to put the following, which is a comment I saw to this article. I can’t vouch for its veracity, but to me it has the ring of truth, as well as (sadly) familiarity in its m.o.:

In 88-89 I was a reserve member of the military Govt in Gaza. I hated being there and requested to transfer back to my original unit in Lebanon but to no avail so I did my job of trying to keep the peace and stop Hamas from spreading out of the neighborhood of Ally Muktar, I was in the house of Yasseen [Hamas head at the time] twice as our officers tried to explain to him what he was doing to the city. But the blind fkr couldn’t see it nor would he listen.

Afterwards we had an emergency call to investigate a crime scene. The man of the house was tied to a chair badly beaten and bleeding profusely from stab wounds. His wife [and] daughters … lay on the floor lifeless in their own blood, having been tortured, raped, and killed while the father was forced to watch. This happened because he didn’t want to join Hamas.

As our medics tended to his wounds he dipped his hand in the blood of his family and swore that he would avenge them. I never knew if he came back from the hospital in Ashkalon.

But I saw this happen a few more times after this.

This is how Hamas got the vote by the people.

    Yes, it always was a fiction; it was really a “we, the PLO, Hamas, (whatever the latest name for that evil is) are losing so we need to pretend to a cease fire/peace process so that we can re-group.”

    And that Israel so many times tried it shows how much Israelis just want to live in peace and be left alone.

    To lie is to knowingly tell an untruth with the intent to deceive. It is an attack upon the truth. Given the special privileges that the media operates under, it is a form of perjury.

    At base, it is an attempt to prevail through cheating and an implicit admission that the position they support cannot stand upon its own merits.

    They condemn themselves out of their own mouths.

  9. The Melanie Phillips interview led me to this remarkable interview of a young woman who miraculously survived the attack on the music festival. She’s obviously a hippie but has a few choice words for the Gaza sympathizers in the west. Among other things she points out that there were thousands of Gazan “civilians” raping, killing, and looting in addition to the Hamas operatives. 22 minutes but easily followed at 1.5x.

    The author addresses the Kisin post “The Day the Delusions Died,” which we’ve previously considered, and the Sowell world-view in his 1987 book, A Conflict of Visions.
    He doesn’t like them.
    Examples of one obfuscation technique (there are others):
    “Just four paragraphs into Kisin’s piece, the reader is already knee-deep in fallacies. For one thing, no progressive with any political power has called for the complete elimination of all economic inequality.”

    That said, he raises questions (literally) that should be addressed, in order to clarify his spin and thereafter either refute it or correct errors that actually might exist in Kisin’s work (possibly) or Sowell’s (unlikely) — or even revise one’s own opinions, if so inclined.

    The Civilian Hub’s activities have also led to previously unthinkable dialogue with some of those who staunchly opposed organizations such as Brothers in Arms before the war broke out.

    Israel Cohen, an ultra-Orthodox journalist, visited the hub and then wrote on X, “Wow! This group of patriots for Israel has established a crazy monster (of an operation) that’s helping the wounded, and soldiers, locating the missing, and helping families from the south. And it’s all completely voluntary. Kudos!”

    Also writing on X, right-wing Channel 12 TV political correspondent Amit Segal said he left the hub thinking, “How much strength this nation has, how much courage.”

    Yishai Cohen, an ultra-Orthodox journalist for the Haredi news site Kikar Shabbat, who refused for six months to talk to members of Brothers in Arms, interviewed tech entrepreneur and Brothers in Arms co-founder Noam Lanir this week. “If you told me two weeks ago that I’d sit with you for a conversation, I would say, Wake up from the dream, and quickly,” he began.

    Last week he visited the situation room at Beit Kama, where he saw Brothers in Arms and Orthodox Israelis working together to get boxes out to those in need. “After nine months of hate, we’ve understood that we are brothers,” he said.

    I hope these feelings last.

    Analysts said that despite the networks giving a total of 525 minutes of air time to discuss what’s been happening in Gaza and with Israel, not not one of three broadcast networks made a single mention of the “Squad” Democrats’ numerous actions and remarks against Israel. The study included these seven members of the group: Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Reps. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), Cori Bush (D-MO), and Summer Lee (D-PA).

    Such remarks include “calling Israel apartheid,” “accusing Israel of war crimes,” and not “cosigning” an “anti-Hamas resolution.” Following the attack on October 7, the study found that not one of the broadcast evening news mentioned that Omar joined Bush and Tlaib in calling on Congress to cease military aid for Israel.

    On October 11, a resolution was introduced which affirmed support of Israel and condemned Hamas’s “barbaric” attack. Not one of those 7 Squad members signed it and that was never mentioned on CBS, ABC or NBC.

    Omar, Bush and Tlaib all repeatedly promoted the lie blaming Israel for bombing a hospital inside Gaza, which was actually the result of a rocket misfired by Hamas hitting a parking lot, not a hospital. Again, none of this was reported by those three news broadcasts.

    On October 17, Tlaib tweeted the false claim and it remains on X at the time of this publication.

    The print edition of National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan’s Foreign Affairs piece, titled “The Sources of American Power,” outlines how the Biden administration’s “foreign policy for a changed world” is leading to a “freer and more stable world.” Sullivan particularly praises Biden for helping to bring peace to the Middle East.

    “The Israeli-Palestinian situation is tense, particularly in the West Bank,” Sullivan wrote, “but in the face of serious frictions, we have de-escalated crises in Gaza and restored direct diplomacy between the parties after years of its absence.”

    That was one of several lines removed or altered in the online version of Sullivan’s piece in light of Hamas’s Oct. 7 invasion of Israel, which left 1,300 Israelis dead. The original version seems to have gone to print prior to the attack, and appeared in the print edition of the magazine released Wednesday.

    Publications rarely allow an author to make substantial changes after a piece has been sent to print, revisions are generally reserved for factual errors. But the digital edits to Sullivan’s piece are immense, and undermine his original argument that Biden is forging peace in the Middle East.

    What’s the deal with leftist Western Jews and gays supporting Hamas and the Palestinians, who would absolutely murder them without remorse, if it could? It goes back to the Soviet incubation of oppression theology in Western academia.
    The Soviets used Marxist theory to teach “resistance” groups to set aside their differences and work together against their common class and ideological enemies, the capitalist oppressors. Worldwide socialism was presented as a brotherhood.
    Supposedly all these groups were brothers and sisters under the skin, because they were all oppressed by capitalism and imperialism. Socialism and communism were peddled as great unifying forces that would bring them together against their class enemies in a worldwide struggle.

    This had the happy benefit of teaching Western dupes not to dwell on the imperialist, racist, and authoritarian tendencies of the Soviet empire itself. “No enemies on the Left!” they taught, giving Moscow a free pass for every imperial action it took.

    This aspect of oppression theology casts a very long shadow. Young leftists today are taught to look at all oppressed resistance groups as brothers – even those which not only threaten favored left-wing constituencies, but actively persecute and kill them.
    This is the seed of the growing alliance between the hard Left and radical Islam, which violently opposes a great deal of what the Left supposedly stands for. These two authoritarian ideologies have a few big things in common, like their penchant for speech codes.
    Oppression theology slots brown Islamic people into the “victim” role, even though Islamic governments are almost always oppressive on a scale that should make leftists take up arms against them, and quite a few of those governments are run by filthy rich oil magnates.
    For today’s leftist, the important thing is banding together with the oppressed Palestinians to fight white Jewish capitalist oppression. They are willing to give their Resistance allies a pass on all that “throwing gays off of buildings” stuff.

    There was a time when The Left had moderates. I don’t see it any more. The Left is all PostModern Liberals — at least 95% of them — as opposed to “classical” liberals.

    They are the sort of liberal Truman referred to as “Professional” liberals:
