After Jordan Neely’s death, no one is going to do much to stop man wielding a cleaver on BART — 25 Comments

  1. A wolf among sheep. That’s not to say that attempting to take down a deranged adult male wielding a clever is advisable for an adult male who is unarmed. Even with high level martial arts training it’d be ridiculously risky to try alone. And we all know that The State won’t necessarily have your back in the event that you kill said attacker. It seems as if we are no longer permitted self defense in such situations according to the powers that be.

  2. Many on the right have begun to be rather stern in claiming that the inhabitants of Chicago, NYC, and SF fully deserve what they have been voting for year after year. Having spent my entire adult life (until recent retirement) living in those three (once vibrant and wonderful) cities, I have been, until now, reluctant to concur, but I cannot disagree any longer.

  3. I regularly ride the NYC subway and haven’t had encountered any problems, though last year I was few feet away when a disturbed guy lightly shoved a woman aside as he was exiting the train. She was more startled and upset than hurt.

But a good friend of ours, along with a couple of others (including a Goldman Sachs employee) was assaulted a couple of days ago at the 42nd Street station (during rush hour) by a presumably mentally ill guy while exiting a subway car. She ended up needing stitches and had a mild concussion. Apparently a witness chased down the perp and the police arrested him. Turns out he had two knives in his pack. Somehow it resulted the next day in a meeting with the mayor, attended by the CEO of Goldman. I’m sure nothing will come of it other than an expression of deep concern by Adams.

All of this is anecdotal of course, but being only a step removed from a couple of incidents, this sort of thing must be happening pretty regularly. I’ll continue to ride the subway but alert to my surroundings. Our friend says she’s done with it and will Uber to work.

  4. In most of these cases, citizens are disarmed at least in terms of guns.
Suppose a guy’s a carpenter and has a hammer? Or two, one to throw and one to follow up?
Some umbrellas are pretty sturdy on the longitudinal axis.
Hypotheticals abound. So if a guy has a legit item which doubles as a weapon and takes down a cleaver-armed maniac. Not like the Neely case where the guy was empty-handed.

  5. “Hypotheticals abound. So if a guy has a legit item which doubles as a weapon and takes down a cleaver-armed maniac.”

The SF Giants and the Oakland A’s could ride the BART cars with open-carry Louisville Sluggers.

  6. The Marine in the Neely case is being charged with second-degree manslaughter.

  7. Unfortunately, those on the left are not stupid.
So they must have a purpose in mind for all of this.
Look at the steps and ask yourself what logically follows.
    Disarm the public.
Greatly enable and give free rein to the criminally inclined.
Severely punish those who confront the criminal.
    Essentially make self-defense illegal.
Import Millions upon Millions of illegal aliens without jobs.
Those are the steps already taken in virtually every big city.
But what can’t go on, won’t go on.
So when crime skyrockets to a horrendous enough level… Impose martial law.
Arrest and imprison without trial any who protest.
Declare that elections must be deferred…
    Until the National Emergency ends.

  8. Appears Penny will be charged.

Might ask of those whom he tried to protect, and their families, how they voted.

Back in the day, I used to think of the implicit threat in the last two lines of Kipling’s “Tommy”.

“An’ Tommy ain’t a bloomin’ fool,
    You bet that Tommy sees!”

Wondered if there were some alternate universe where soldiers, veterans, and their families to go to, and pull up the ladder. Long as we could watch….

I’ve sort of gotten over that, but it’s pretty close to even up.

  9. The NYC TV news keeps repeating the Mayor saying “one thing is certain, Neely did not deserve to die.”

But, the mayor and others on the left keep forgetting that riders don’t deserve to be physically threatened just riding the subway.

A co-worker of mine in the SF Bay area doesn’t ride BART to the office any more. He drives in and parks a block from his office. He says the main reason is that he just does not feel safe on BART. (since he works Eastern time zone hours it works out okay)

  10. It is not uncommon where I live in East Texas to see guys carrying fixed blade knives with large grip handles in sheaths on their belts, with blades of at least 4 inches or more . I am not sure what the legal length in Texas is any more. For years it was four inches or maybe less than, which is about what I carry as a folding knife. But then again, people can open carry guns here to and are generally allowed to use them for defense, Austin notwithstanding.

  11. I’ve heard reasonable folks say… Hell yes, defund the police, let us defend ourselves. Problem(s) solved.

  12. And our far-leftist masters, living in their Island retreats, can’t understand why mass transit ridership is down. Everywhere in the US.

  13. The Bay Area seems to be full of sheep eager to be slaughtered:

“Jen Angel, owner and operator of Oakland bakery Angel Cakes, died on February 9 due to injuries sustained in a violent robbery. Angel was known not only as a maker of outstanding pies and treats, but also as a longtime organizer of the Anarchist Book Fair and a member of the Occupy Wall Street movement. . . . Angel’s family says that because of her political beliefs, they do not feel she would have wanted to see the people who attacked her prosecuted with a crime. . . .

Angel was attacked and injured on February 6 as she was running errands in her car in Oakland. Two thieves blocked her car’s way out of a Wells Fargo parking lot and reached into her vehicle, stealing her property through the window. Angel gave chase on foot and in the ensuing scuffle her clothing got stuck in the thieves’ car door. The San Francisco Chronicle reports she was dragged more than 50 feet and sustained serious injuries to her brain. . . . Emily Harris, a close friend of Angel’s and member of the National Advisory Board for the Prison Creative Arts Project, told the Chronicle she thinks Jen would understand the instinct to want to incarcerate the attackers. ‘But we know that if the people who cause her harm are sent to jail, all we’re doing is perpetuating more harm,’ Harris said.”

  14. It is astonishing to know that there are people as naive as Emily Harris and Co.

  15. “….because of her political beliefs, they do not feel she would have wanted to see the people who attacked her prosecuted with a crime. . . .”

What it does mean, though, is that she’s perfectly fine that others be attacked by the same people who attacked her…even if, no doubt, she hopes it won’t have to come to that.

(I imagine she’ll have time now to be able to think this one over a bit.)

  16. Barry.

“Its a price we have to pay”..when it happens to someone else.

    Said smugly, of course.

  17. they are eloi, this a crime being committed against a great city,

  18. Oh, I’m sure she’s a truly lovely person.
    Um, was.
Just not certain if she really thought this thing through….

  19. David Horowitz began his journey away from communist cheerleader because of the murder of a woman who was his friend and fellow lefty in the Bay Area by his Black Panther friends.

“A conservative is a liberal who’s been mugged.”

    —-

I keep saying that I not only refuse to live in a blue city or blue state, but I will also strive diligently to avoid traveling in one. Why would anyone submit themselves to blatantly unfair and unjust Kafka-esque nightmares where some drugged street person can force you into a choice between dying or living the rest of your life in prison simply for defending yourself honorably?

  20. BigD.
Interesting. My wife, a Spanish teacher, didn’t like the pronunciation of Vasquez’ name. Otherwise, good.

In the situation, what might have been better? Penny or some similarly-motivated individual goes to stand between Neely and the other passengers. They feel safer.

Either this doesn’t stop Neely from approaching the passengers, or it triggers him. In either case, he may actually strike our hero first. In which case the latter puts in a move far more likely to be lethal or seriously injuring than the plan for a submission hold. You have to be really, really good to change a strike into a submission hold…before the next strike.

Okay. Neely’s dead or seriously hurt.

Prosecute? In NYC, yes. Penny is white and taunted Neely, anticipating Neely making a move which would excuse Penny murdering him, poor guy. What else was Penny expecting, the racist.
I figure they get the Rittenhouse prosecution team and offer them the racial lineup of their dreams.
This presumes Neely’s hypothetical first strike doesn’t include a knife or something and Penny’s dead or disabled.

Think this will require deep discussion about….race and violence and oppression and what not?

    Me either.

  21. I resent the idea a man isn’t a threat unarmed. Hands and feet are lethal i don’t want to wait around to be kicked to death before I’m allowed to unleash deadly force
