McCarthy keeps another promise… — 43 Comments

  1. Supposing McCarthy wished to be thoroughgoing he’d ban their commie staffers too. But no, we won’t look for that.

  2. One small goodess I suppose. Adam Schiff is truly an odious creature. Even among politicians he’s remarkable for his awfulness.

  3. I’m wondering about staffers too because these guys are not reading these giant bills themselves and then deciding how to vote. These guys have staffers to do that. Staffers, I would guess, are incipient Swamp creatures; how much are they leading the politicians and it what direction? Like we have to ask.

If the people elected to Congress were ever serious about reform, they would severely limit staff and force Congressmen and Senators to do the work themselves.

  4. I was happy to hear him explain Eric Swalwell appropriately. Swalwell simply can’t be trusted.

  5. I think that I read that Schiff was due to rotate out of the committee anyway. But maybe it is the thought that counts. Now lets see what else he does.
I see that Crenshaw will not be his committee chair.

  6. Just a start. What about Pelosi herself? Now she’s no longer Speaker, we need to keep her off committees.

  7. Nonapod:

Odious is a perfect description of Schiff. There are other good descriptions, but they don’t work in a family-friendly post.

  8. I don’t think anyone has accused McCarthy of being as bad as McConnell, who really does go out of his way sometimes to emphasize what a uniparty hosebag he is. I think the issue with McCarthy is what will he do in 2025 if he’s Speaker with a margin big enough to withstand Freedom Caucus objections? It’s not all that hard for McCarthy to throw red meat to the Right now.

  9. Again, full tit for tat would be to debar Pelosi, Schiff, and Swalwell from all committee assignments. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar suffered that for no reason whatsoever. That act alone should debar Pelosi. Schiff’s scamming around during the Russian collusion hoax should debar him. Swalwell banging Fang Fang while on the Intelligence committee should debar him.

  10. Credit should be given where credit is due. That said, this is low hanging fruit. The rubber will hit the road when the sacrificing of GOPe interests are at stake.

  11. Adam Schiff is truly an odious creature. Even among politicians he’s remarkable for his awfulness.

    Nonapod:

    Works for me!

  12. The rubber will hit the road when the sacrificing of GOPe interests are at stake.

    Geoffrey Britain:

    OK.

I must ask. Will McCarthy skeptics ever truly be satisfied with McCarthy? I get the impression there will inevitably be a “Yeah, but…”

  13. huxley:

The “yeah buts” are exactly as expected, and I predict they won’t stop because he of course won’t be able to change the fact that the Senate and presidency are in Democrat hands so the House’s power is quite limited.

Whatever he does will by definition not be enough for some. They will not give him credit because they’ll say that he wouldn’t have done it without being forced by the holdouts. They will say he wouldn’t do it if the GOP controlled the Senate, because the GOP is just a uniparty in league with the Democrats. And on and on like that.

  14. Anthony blinken the current secretary of state was the head of the biden center

  15. McCarthy was on Hannity tonight. He said that the House will pass appropriations bills in proper order. If Schumer doesn’t take them up in the Seante and comes to the Houswe with and omnibus bill, the House will refuse to take it up and will instead send them a CR.

Maybe not a great solution, but at least a push back against the Democrats’ slim Seante majority.

McCarthy also, talked about trying to work with Senate Republicans in an effort to get them on board with the House agenda. Well, it’s better than not trying to work with your fellow Repubs.

McCarthy talks a good game. We’ll see how much he can actually deliver.

  16. I’m sure there’s a group of conservatives for whom nothing McCarthy does or doesn’t do can convince them. There’s, I’m sure, a numerically equal group of people who vote Republican who will excuse anything McCarthy does or fails to do; either giving him credit for good intentions, or saying that he did all he could do or at least prevented something worse. The existence of those people does not discredit anyone who shares their views.

I can say that there are things McCarthy could do that could convince me he was not selling out the base. I don’t want to say what of those things are because they are either complex and contingent or simple and extreme. I don’t want it to sound as though nothing less than extreme would satisfy me. The extreme cases are easier to specify in advance without loopholes, is all.

But one of the less extreme ones would McCarthy gets a budget through the House without any pork or earmarks. It wouldn’t pass the Senate in that form. If he kept the Dem’s poison pills out of the final budget, even at the cost of their getting pork that none of the GOP does, I’d give him credit for doing all that could be done.

Likewise if the GOPe gets pork and the Dems get things like weakening elections further or loosening immigration any further in exchange, then as far I’m concerned he would have sold out the base and I would not accept arguments that he did all he could given the circumstances. No budget or law can pass without a House majority, so what gets by is what he’s not willing to expend political capital to prevent and it’s a revealed preference.

Not reassured by talk of a continuing resolution as an alternative to another omnibus. That’s the Establishment way. (Isn’t there an omnibus now that would be continued?)

  17. Very pleased to see this. It took guts to follow through on this promise. Schiff and Swalwell are both white men, so it’s less risky pulling them. But Omar is a triple crown of intersectionality. No Democrat dares touch her and indeed many Republicans are leary.

McCarthy is starting off right. I can’t help but wonder how much is due to the dissidents pushing him as far as they did. Only time will tell.

  18. Indeed, Omar thinks she’s invincible.
    In spite of everything.
Maybe she’s right…(she’ll make a huge stink…thinking she’ll never have to regret it)…but maybe she’ll discover there’s a limit to everything she’s done. Been doing.

As for Schiff, I think “odious” is being far too kind…

(Swalwell was always a village idiot type…if a definite irritant because he takes himself so seriously…)

BTW—Quibble Alert!!—Neo should correct the spelling of the latter’s name in the first line of the post.

  19. In the meantime, the Democratic Party’s “Culling-the-herd” policies (while enriching themselves and undermining the country) are WORKING TO PERFECTION!
“A Day In The Life: Southern California’s Fentanyl Crisis”—
    https://www.zerohedge.com/medical/day-life-southern-californias-fentanyl-crisis
Something to ponder(?)—nah…. Besides it’s all Trump’s and the Republicans’ fault!
“…During 2022, fentanyl seizures increased 594 percent throughout the State of California, …”

    https://www.zerohedge.com/political/hero-customer-who-shot-armed-robber-houston-taco-joint-ordered-face-grand-jury-soros
Makes one wonder: shouldn’t the “Soros-Funded DA”, who put this thug (and many more like him) back on the streets be facing a grand jury for endangering the citizenry?
    Yes, everything is going swimmingly…

  20. If McCarthy follows through on refusing to pass omnibus bills which come from the Senate, that will be a major step forward. He, and House Republicans, will have to convince Schumer (and McConnell) that they mean it.

  21. If McCarthy follows through on refusing to pass omnibus bills which come from the Senate

Budget and appropriations bills have to originate in the House. McCarthy et al can put an end to these catch all continuing resolutions by sending the Senate old-school appropriations bills.

  22. Omar is already claiming the race card over her removal. Boo hoo.

The appropriate course of action would be (1) to debar Pelosi, Schiff, and Swalwell from all committees and (2) to give Omar and a few other ringers (e.g. Maxine Waters) committee assignments which (a) do not require security clearances and which (b) do not provide them with opportunities for patronage and where (c) they have a dearth of opportunities to injure people.

  23. (Swalwell was always a village idiot type…if a definite irritant because he takes himself so seriously…)

More like a caricature of a frat boy. The most disconcerting thing about him is that both he and Schiff were prosecutors at one time.

  24. @Art Deco:Budget and appropriations bills have to originate in the House

The Senate gets around this by hollowing out a bill that did originate in the House and writing their own bill in it.

Refusing to pass Senate bills that do this end-run would help me believe that McCarthy is acting by principles.

  25. If McCarthy can legislate a perpetual motion machine Frederick will be convinced. but until then McCarthy is just, wait for it, Uniparty!

That’s how that game works. It’s all in his buts.

  26. Late to the game, but replying to Neo’s circa 8pm comment: I’m very much willing to ‘wait and see’ on McCarthy and his actions. However, as I noted before, such ‘actions’ are easy now as the vast majority of these actions never make it past the Senate or WH and are thus pure theater. As others have mentioned, for now, the real power he holds is in the budget and appropriations. If he holds the line there, I’ll give him credit.

  27. The republicans should subpoena Joke Bidet’s and Hunter bidet’s income tax returns.
After all, the dems set the precedent in doing this when they obtained Trump’s returns and they did NOT have any “a priori” evidence at all to justify obtaining his returns; they were just on a fishing expedition.
Not sure one can say the same about the Bidet’s.

If the Bidet’sdid receive large sums of $$$$ from their dealings with China/Ukraine or who-knows-who, the $$$ should show up on their tax returns, and if not, the $$$ should be revealed in any large purchases (real estate, investments) they have made and/or the returns (dividends, interest, capital gains, etc) they realized from financial investments.
And if they stashed all/some of it in off-shore accounts, by law, this must be reported to the IRS.

Ooops, I forgot; the bidet’s are demokrats. No agency of the federal govt will bother to look into this.
Forget about what I just wrote.

  28. The dems might be able to stifle republican efforts, but the results will be public, which could have an effect on the electorate. Trey Gowdy didn’t “do” anything in his searing question sessions, but, then, congressmen don’t have the power to “do” anything.
But at least the perfidy is public, which is a good thing. Better than nothing.

  29. @Art Deco, 7:15 a.m.: The Constitution, Art. 7, says, “All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives.” Budgets and appropriations have traditionally come from the House, but the Constitution does not require it.

I was corrected on this by another commenter a couple of weeks ago, whom I would credit if I could remember who it was.

  30. “They will say he wouldn’t do it if the GOP controlled the Senate, because the GOP is just a uniparty in league with the Democrats. And on and on like that.”

And what, exactly, is wrong with that reaction? How is that reaction not entirely appropriate given what we’ve seen from Republicans in DC? Remember when Trump wanted a big infrastructure bill passed and McConnell wouldn’t support it?

    https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/503083-trumps-push-for-major-infrastructure-bill-faces-gop-opposition/

Weird how those objections seemed to disappear when Biden was in the White House.

    Mike
