The January 6th committee…
…does exactly what it was always going to do: recommend that the DOJ indict Donald Trump.
The hypocrisy of the following statement is stunning, but not surprising. We’ve become used to it:
“Faith in our system is the foundation of American democracy. If the faith is broken, so is our democracy,” said select panel chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.). “Donald Trump broke that faith. He lost the 2020 election and knew it, but he chose to try to stay in office through a multi-part scheme.”
“This can never happen again,” Thompson added.
They’re determined to fix things so that no Republican can ever win again.
This is interesting in terms of the question of whether the DOJ will take the even more stunning move of actually following through on the indictment, or whether this is just more theater. Personally, I don’t think they’ve decided yet what they will do, and will keep their options open for the time when an indictment might best benefit the left:
Charging decisions rest entirely with DOJ prosecutors, not Congress, but panel members have increasingly stressed the impact their transmission to the department could have on public opinion — viewing it as part of building a historical record around the attack.
I don’t think this sort of thing changes anyone’s opinion, either.
A week ago, Ben Gerson wrote for TheNation a piece entitled “If M Garland Had The Courage Of His Convictions, Trump Would Already Be On His Way To Prison”, and some of the commenters were furious with Garland’s “cowardice” in having failed thus far to place the evil OrangeMan in striped prison apparel (or orange jumpsuit). No rational person could possibly have any respect for the Stalinist J6 “show-trial”, but it remains to be seen how much Garland will care about incurring the wrath of the base should he fail to do the bidding not just of the hard left, but of the entire Democratic party.

Complete waste of taxpayer dollars. This was a fait accompli. As neo writes, they were going to do this from day one, so why not have a week of hearings and issue the identical recommendation?
I don’t have empathy for Trump. He played both sides after the election and failed to use his ability to pardon to help those who got caught up in January 6th; supporters following his insistence that the election had been stolen.
But we the taxpayers? Once again, we got screwed. And I also have great empathy for the innocents wrongfully held and prosecuted for political purposes.
Yep. Garland will indict, or not, based on what is in the best interests of the left. The left has convinced itself that a Trump nomination is the best way for Democrats to hold the White House in 2024. (I believe they are right.) Expect Garland to indict, or not indict, based on what they believe is most likely to aid Trump’s campaign.
My guess is that Trump will be indicted, right after he either clinches the Republican nomination or is eliminated from contention for it. If he does win the nomination, expect a short trial and inevitable conviction by a DC jury around October of 2024. (In an amazingly fortunate turn of events for the D team, Garland will need a good long time to consider such a momentous decision.)
Fear, historical ignorance and ideological fanaticism among the democrat leadership have resulted in political blindness; the greater the injustice, the greater the martyrdom.
They create a rallying point among the opposition. They act as an accelerant, creating an ideological firestorm.
First the Jan. 6th protestors… then parents declared domestic terrorists. Now the last President. How long before they go after Supreme Court Justices?

That is, they’re certainly not worried about losing any future elections.
(Now why might that be?…Probably due—they’re sure—to their unbeatable charisma and overall governing expertise, their firm support of the underdog, the little guy, the people in need, the dire need to uphold the law of the land in these critical times, etc.)
But OK, they might believe that their “best interest” might be something along the lines of…hanging DJT high and leaving him twisting up there in the wind for, oh, say, a week. A month? A year? Eternity?
And then go for his family.
Call it an “example”.

They do seem to be laying the groundwork to really crack down on the deplorables. Whatever they may think in their hermetically sealed bubble in Washington, Trump is extremely popular in very large parts of the US outside of it. He still pulls in very large crowds for his rallies. The Dims might want to think very carefully about what a genuine insurrection looks like when it’s composed of a lot of heavily armed men instead of goof balls, grandmas, and undercover FBI agents.
