What’s going on with the alleged perp in the LA car incident that injured the police recruits?
First we were told it was probably a bona fide accident. Then we were told it was likely to have been a purposeful crime. Now we hear this:
Twenty-five recruits for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department got mowed down by a driver on Wednesday. Police arrested Nicholas Gutierrez for attempted murder almost immediately. Police investigators insist that they have probable cause and evidence to support those charges.
Late last night, however, Gutierrez walked out of jail…
What happened?
The explanation is that they want to build a more solid case. I supposed it could merely be that, but author Morrisey adds:
If the evidence is there, and the LASO has probable cause to charge him, why is Gutierrez walking free? None of the media outlets covering this mention Gascón by name, but this leaves the impression that the LASO — and likely other LA-area law enforcement agencies — have little trust in Gascón and the DA’s office these days. They seem to want a case so solid that Gascón cannot possibly deal it down without taking enormous political risks.
If they have decent evidence that this was a crime, it seems dangerous to release this guy. If not, he should be released. Which is it? It certainly shouldn’t also be necessary to worry about an adversarial DA, but there’s little question that they do have to worry about it.
It is futile to wonder whether LA’s Floyd-supporting mayor-elect or the truly odious DA will care at all about this or any other violent crime in The City of Angels, now fully equivalent to the Windy City and to Gotham in the incompetency of its leadership.
Sooner or later the death squads will take over and trash like this guy will just end up dead.
FWIW, the Devil’s Lettuce may have had something to do with the wrong-way attack: “Authorities allegedly found weed in Gutierrez’ Honda CRV and are trying to determine if he was high at the time, the LA Times reported, citing a source familiar with the investigation.”
Seven of the injured recruits are still in the hospital, with two of them in critical condition.

LA, Chicago, NYC: Zombie cities slouching towards liquescence.
It seems probable that the Sheriff’s Department is concerned about Gascón’s enabling of criminality.
If the police, can’t police, vigilanteism will arise.
Which, if vigilantism becomes widespread enough, will provide the ‘rationale’ for declaring Nationwide Martial Law.
With Gascon, there’s a need to go above and beyond. Otherwise he’ll lower it to involuntary manslaughter. Or possibly even release the guy after accusing law enforcement of bias.
The cyber division of his own department brought charges against a company involved in electronic voting, alleging that the company was illegally storing the personal information of poll workers in China. Gascon threw out the charges, claiming bias by his department, and a rushed investigation. He claims that he’ll have a proper investigation, but I suspect we’ll never see it again.
Same thing with this driver if Gascon gets the opportunity, I expect.
More important, in my thinking, is what happens to the injured recruits?
Are they actually employees of the sheriff’s department, or in some lessor status as students in the academy, and as the latter will this be an employment-related injury? And if the former, what kind of injury compensation will they see? Reports say the several have lost, or will lose, limbs and obviously not be physically eligible for continued employment in their chosen field. Many retirement systems use length of service in the calculation for post-employment benefits; these injured folk measure that in months, not years, if eligible for anything at all.
It’s probably a guy Mayorkas waved over the border.
The perp was likely far beyond the Southern border well before his release hit the airwaves, likely to never be seen in the US again.
