  1. Wow. That Nahre Sol video is something. I love the way musicians who really know what they are doing will the bend the music to suit their expression or interpretation of that music. *with some liberties from the original.

I was watching along with the sheet music, staring at a bunch of whole notes and quarter notes and then she plays that note at 0:45. I guess that one note is something of a special statement to her, so she jumps the beat and then holds it longer. It’s a little louder too.

The rest of it is amazing also. “springy doodad upwards” and “sarcastic”? Fun.

  2. Small update on covid masking. Just got back from a routine physical with my PCP. All signs requiring masking taken down and no masking at all for patients. All staff still required to wear masks, but were quite relaxed about it often taking the mask down to talk, including my doctor. She is part of Baptist Health which is one of the large (and well-regarded) health systems here in northern FL. From what she said, looks like the lawyers are now making the masking policy rather than the providers. I guess it makes sense to protect against crazy lawsuits. As I mentioned before, UFHealth, the other large system, still has a very strict masking policy in place for everyone.

  3. “I love the way musicians who really know what they are doing will the bend the music to suit their expression or interpretation of that music.”

So true, and I am so envious. Since retirement I’ve been playing guitar about an hour everyday….just trying to learn songs and keep developing some minimal technical proficiency. I wish I had kept playing from when I started some 40 odd years ago instead of a 40 year gap.

Every once in awhile while playing a song I know well, I get a fleeting glimpse of how to add more emotion and interpretation into a piece like a true musician. Much like my golf game which is about the same age, though I’ve been playing continuously for 40 some years. Maybe once a round the club strikes the ball perfectly with seemingly no guidance from me, and I get a sense of what those pros seem to do effortlessly every weekend. I guess it’s called the “zone”, but it would be nice to be in it more.

  4. “Still [crazily at it]…after all these years…”:

    …and with:

  5. can one sue her for pretending to be a public official,

so the french and the dutch are at war with their farmers, the swiss want families to double up for their weekly shower, ugh, but putin is the real foe,

  6. I really wonder about “standing” in that civil lawsuit filed by the NY AG. Usually, people suing for fraud are the ones who claim they were defrauded.

  7. Ah Kate, it’s—merely(!)—more Democratic Party projection.
They’re defrauding the entire country (together with practically every city and state they control—including NYC)…

    …BUT TRUMP!!

  8. IANAL, so can anyone explain how and why it is that a US State can evidently bring a civil suit against a private citizen?

  9. The only times I still have to mask is at a physician’s office or at my federal workplace when the county is level red. That happened for about a week last month. My coworkers who are not vaccinated no longer have to provide periodic negative results for covid.

  10. IANAL, so can anyone explain how and why it is that a US State can evidently bring a civil suit against a private citizen?

I suppose for tax arrearages or for claims in re business dealings between the private citizen or private company and the state government. The idea is sketchy in other circumstances.

  11. “Five Myths About China”

It’s David Goldman. He’s a cassandra talking out of his rectum in any subject he touches. If he’s right this time, it’s per the stopped clock principle.

  12. William Barr was on Fox News a few minutes ago talking about the NY vs. Trump case. He thinks it’s a huge overreach. The alleged overestimated asset declarations were in loan applications to banks and other investment sources. The sources are not suing, and in fact the loans have been repaid. Barr says, and I agree, that this is a political effort.

  13. Miguel:

Do try and focus, Vlad has been threatening to nuke anyone and everyone. But you focus on bureaucrats. Otay, whatever. What about HOAs?

  14. I liked Tom Lehrer when I was in high school, but I’m a little embarrassed now that I did. It’s like that with youthful enthusiasms. People often want to distance themselves to feel like they’ve grown up.

I also remember Tom Lehrer’s return to live performance. People had been waiting for a long, long time. It was a fundraising tour for George McGovern (or possibly a benefit for Congressman Robert Drinan). It’s hard to believe that was 50 years ago.

  15. god what a tedious tool, of course james in dereliction of her actual duty, to keep people safe, not griftshops like the clinton foundation

  16. @Art Deco, so Letitia James is claiming that Trump’s organization took loans out that were based on fraudulent asset valuations of properties? Wouldn’t that be the banks purview, like the loan officer or whomever is responsible for evaluating whether or not to approve a loan?

  17. “IANAL, so can anyone explain how and why it is that a US State can evidently bring a civil suit against a private citizen?”

    Trump.

(If that’s a less than satisfactory answer, then let’s try, “Because they’re Democrats…and for them, thuggish intimidation of enemies, perceived enemies and potential enemies is THE NAME OF THE GAME. Note that “enemy” in this context means anyone who may be perceived as a threat…or who doesn’t vote for or otherwise support the Democratic Party….)

  18. The Hunter Biden matter is about corruption by Joe Biden in office. This is entirely different from the effort to “get Trump” for anything and everything when he was not in public office.

  19. A music video that I can relate to. Autmn Leaves was a favorite in high school and college. I remember it as a big Nat King Cole hit.

Also, My Darling Clementine was a favorite for our Boy Scout Troop to sing. I still remember the lyrics all these years later. Hadn’t thought about that in years. Both songs bring back pleasant memories.

  20. Shucks, wuz only tryin’ to point out the highpocracy….

    Meanwhile, here’s Dershowitz:
“Trump’s Team Should Push to Remove AG James”—
    https://www.newsmax.com/newsmax-tv/alan-dershowitz-trump-letitia-james/2022/09/21/id/1088484/
    Opening grafs:
‘ The first move former President Donald Trump’s attorneys should do to fight back against New York Attorney General Letitia James’ civil lawsuit against him and his family members is to push that she be recused and disqualified from the case, Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz said on Newsmax Wednesday after her announcement.
‘ “I like Letitia James,” Dershowitz said on Newsmax’s “American Agenda.” “She’s a very nice person, but she campaigned on the promise to get Trump before seeing any evidence, and so she is just fulfilling a campaign promise. You can’t have prosecutors even civilly prosecute a defendant if they made a campaign promise.”…’

(This article is so good, it highlights both Dershowitz’s extrardinary integrity and his perilously lousy judge of character…)

  21. Art,

I’m not a fan of Goldman but I was struck by several points he made, it would be helpful if you addressed those points rather than simply dismissing him based in dislike.

    Specifically,

“China’s exports to the U.S. fell to 2% of its GDP in 2021 from 9% in 2005.”, the significance of which is that sanctions placed upon China in the event of their invasion of Taiwan would appear to have little to no effect upon their economy. Do you disagree?

Do you dispute the implication he raised in pointing out that, “The (Pentagon’s) federal development budget was nearly 1% of GDP, vs. 0.3% today.”?

    That, “China’s 2,000 surface-to-ship missiles are a game-changer”?

That, “China has the jump on us in building hypersonic weapons… for which there presently is no defense.”?

That, “An attempt to move U.S. troops to the island in combat-relevant strength would trigger preemption by the mainland.?”

That Goldman is mistaken in his assertion that, “If one side mobilizes, the other has no choice but to preempt, and war becomes inevitable. It is fanciful to expect Beijing to sit on its hands while we raise the cost of reunification.”

Finally, do you disagree that if China deems it necessary, “China will go to war over Taiwan.”?

  22. Geoffrey, he’s a lapsed finance maven who knows nothing about military technology. What he’s saying is cribbed from secondary sources or it’s an ass pull.

About a dozen years ago, he penned another cassandra column during his time as a staff blogger at First Things. Just examining descriptive statistics published by the Federal Reserve online you could tell it was nonsense, and that’s his field.

Whether I dislike him or not is immaterial. The question is, is he trustworthy?

Finally, do you disagree that if China deems it necessary, “China will go to war over Taiwan.”?

It’s a vacuous statement. Why would I ‘agree’ or ‘disagree’?

  23. Geoffrey:

You could listen to a Perun YouTube presentation about China and its military spending, or many of the Midrats discussions about China and its Navy and its missiles (cdrsalamander). Or not. Is China also an arch foe of the WEF/Davos/NWO like Vlad?

  24. What an amazing talent, to be able to overlay a musical style onto a tune. NPR does something similar but I haven’t heard it in years. She’s really talented.

  25. Art,

If China does invade Taiwan, there will be nothing vacuous about it. Much rests upon a correct assessment of China’s resolve vis a vis Taiwan.

I make no assertions as to Goldman’s personal attributes, as I’ve read too few articles by him to have formed an assessment.

I’m simply asking you if the points Goldman cites that I listed, are in your opinion, factually disputable? If not, have the intellectual honesty to admit it.

    om,

When you drop the snark, I’ll respond when appropriate, otherwise not.

  26. Also, My Darling Clementine was a favorite for our Boy Scout Troop to sing

Ach. The only boys camp songs which are much good are variants of “I don’t want no more of Army Life” and “I’ve Got Six Pence”.

The girls have “The Princess Pat Song” and… well that’s it.

  27. If China does invade Taiwan, there will be nothing vacuous about it

You asked me to comment on his statement. His statement is vacuous.

I’m simply asking you if the points Goldman cites that I listed, are in your opinion, factually disputable? If not, have the intellectual honesty to admit it.

Geoffrey, I’m not an aerospace engineer or a soldier of a particular specialty, so I don’t have an opinion on his points. I’m not paying attention to them because it’s a technical subject about which he knows squat.

I do know a tad about economics and how to read government economic and financial data and on the basis of previous experience, I don’t trust him.

And Goldman really has no clue about how much should be spent on military R & D. Answering that question requires granular knowledge few people have. (I used to correspond to an engineer employed at Oak Ridge. He maintained in blunt terms that much scientific and technical research is fraudulent and auditors catch very little; no clue if that’s true or not).

  28. This regime is sold out to china lock sock and barrel they wont lift a finger for taiwan

  29. Wouldn’t that be the banks purview, like the loan officer or whomever is responsible for evaluating whether or not to approve a loan?

Yeah, seems so. It was a 200 page long brief. I’ve long had the impression that verbosity is correlated with bullsh!t.

  30. Prince salman brokered the release of two american volunteers who got themselves in ukrainian goulash

  31. I loved the pianist’s adaptations; she nailed each composer’s recognizable style, especially (for me) Ravel.
We have a very old album of Christmas songs done in various “styles” — not sure what’s happened to it after all these years, but it’s called What If Mozart Wrote “White Christmas” and is still available.

    https://www.allmusic.com/album/what-if-mozart-wrote-white-christmas-mw0000827955

@ F > “It’s a shame Tom Lehrer stopped performing with only two albums (alba?) under his belt.”
Most of the albums simply collect his various works for posterity.
You can find everything he did at this link — but only through 2024.
    https://tomlehrersongs.com/

@ M Smith > “I liked Tom Lehrer when I was in high school, but I’m a little embarrassed now that I did. It’s like that with youthful enthusiasms. People often want to distance themselves to feel like they’ve grown up.”

Although your observation may be true in general, I am not ashamed to still be a Lehrer fan, for nearly 60 years now. If only today’s comics were as witty and talented.
In fact, I joined some like-minded friends to do a very un-professional rendition of “The Folk Song Army” just this summer. It was fun!

  32. The song is actually, “Les feuilles mortes.” Johnny Mercer translated the French lyrics to English, changing “the dead leaves” to “autumn leaves.” The English lyrics have been recorded thousands of times by thousands of artists, but the original French lyrics are still very popular and often used. I’m fairly certain I’ve heard Miles Davis state it was his favorite song to play.

“La Mer,” another French “jazz” song, was written the same year as “Les Feuilles Mortes,” and, like “Les Feuilles Mortes” was translated to English and became very well known as, “Beyond the Sea.”

I don’t speak French, but I’ve read the lyrics to “Autumn Leaves” hold fairly true to the original French, whereas “Beyond the Sea’s” lyrics do not.

  33. “My Way” was likewise very different from the original French “Comme d’habitude.” It became triumphant, rather than mournful. This goes back a long way. A professor I knew used “My Love Loves Me” and the French original “Plasir d’amour” to illustrate the difference between the realistic, pessimistic French and the romantic, uplifting, and optimistic American culture.

The “pay-off” of an article isn’t always what one might think it is. If China really isn’t stealing its advanced technology from us but developing high tech on its own, and if China isn’t dependent on its trade with us but exports to the whole world, then the US is in more trouble with respect to China than it would be otherwise.

  34. Thanks for posting the Nahre Sol…she’s a favorite of mine, and incredibly talented. I love her YouTube channel and have learned tons about music through the years, even if her music theory knowledge is sometimes hard to follow and is light-years ahead of mine.

For me it’s like watching pro football quarterbacks throw passes that I can only throw in my dreams!

  35. @ Rufus > “AesopFan,

Is there a recording anywhere online of you and your friends performing “Folk Song Army?””

    I certainly hope not!!
