Biden will be speaking on Thursday about “the soul of the nation” — 62 Comments

  1. i dubbed it mordor, since it’s no longer the city of brotherly love, it’s like the mock stone henge set in spinal tap

  2. Perhaps the contemporary equivalent of Jimmy Carter’s malaise speech. Joe can tell us to wear more sweaters this winter too.

  3. I know Biden has always been as dumb as a rock and is now nearly senile, but how does this guy live with himself? How does he sleep at night?

Report today or yesterday that something like 700 illegal aliens have died this year in the desert trying to get into the US. And, of course, the Afghanistan withdrawal has created all sorts of pain and suffering. The Mexican drug trade kills people every day. The covid lockdowns were a whole different level of stupidity and disaster. Inflation is crushing people. All of this is due to Biden’s idiotic decisions.

I guess for, The Big Guy, it was all about the money and his ego.

  4. I don’t think it likely but still keeping alert for the prospect of a “Unity Ticket” in the future (2028?), perhaps Dem CA Gov Newsom (Pres) with anti-Trump faux-Republican Romney or Liz Cheney (VP).

  5. The “Soul of the Nation” is a pretty loaded concept. I expect this to be continued bashing and demonization of Trump voters using a variety of workshopped, nonsensical derogatory neologisms such as “semi-fascist” and “ultra-maga”. Clearly this drivel will be a purely political, midterm campaign speech, and as such the networks should have refused to cover it. Of course the networks are shamelessly leftist too, so they’ll happily broadcast this trash.

  6. I like a unity ticket with DeSantis and Gabbard. Tulsi clearly knows that the deep state is the real threat to our country and isn’t afraid to say so. She is old school liberal and holds much of the media/government complex in deep contempt. And she would likely win the votes of many independents.

  7. Probably about as healing as ‘The Birth of a Nation’ (since he, and his cronies like Sen. Byrd were so … enlightened).

  8. I do think we’re in a battle for the soul of the nation, and he’s on the wrong side. The “soul” is in our founding documents and in our guaranteed rights. He opposes those.

  9. He’s just the mouthpiece. I’m sure he had very little to do with writing this piece of garbage about to be delivered. It’s the ‘central committee’ that is guiding all of this.

This is more battlefield prep that we’ve been seeing over the past week or so. They are obviously priming for some sort of operation against the GOP either before, or the day after the election. Combine the rhetoric we are seeing with the MAL raid and it’s a sure warning things are going to get very ugly. There’s going to be a fine line to walk for the GOP and conservatives in general between an overreaction (which is what I think they want), and a measured reaction that’s still strong.

There’s some serious storms on the horizon and they’re not the typical Atlantic hurricanes.

  10. I wonder who he is plagiarizing from this time.

Goebbels’ 1943 “Total War” speech? [in English translation; Biden doesn’t have the chops to plagiarize the original German] “I ask you: Do you want total war?! Do you want it, if necessary, more total and radical than anything that we can yet today even conceive?!”

  11. }}} He called himself that, but his entire life’s work belied it, as well as his personality.

What’s confusing? That’s a standard Marxist/Liberal/Lefty tactic: Use words however you want, and damn you for arguing pedantic little things like “what No means”!

Remember that East Germany was self-styled as the “Deutsche Demokratische Republik”, or the German Democratic Republic, when it’s blatantly obvious that they were neither Democratic NOR a Republic.

Likewise, North Korea is the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. And it’s also neither of those things, and it’s pretty much about as “anti-people” as it can be.

They like to abuse words that way, because it “prevents” you from calling them what they are: Totalitarian Dictatorships. Even more critically, it confuses the meanings of the words.

  12. I would like to believe that there was some real concern for the “soul of America” in the 1860s and the 1960s. Lately it’s mostly about not rocking the boat and upsetting people. It’s so much palaver designed to direct our attention away from the real issues. It’s strange, but the real estate promoter, carnival barker, and reality show host was actually more focused on the real state of the union than the professional politicians.

This week some Pennsylvania Republicans endorsed the Democratic candidate for governor and he applauded their commitment to “bipartisanship.” It’s a farce. He and they are as partisan as ever. They just have a new enemy to rally against. Politicians don’t unify. Their careers are based on division. Crises, problems, external enemies (and some times great opportunities and challenges) unify.

I don’t see any “unity ticket” in the future. If Bernie Sanders is still around, his supporters are going to have to be placated. That means no ex-Republicans on the Democratic ticket. If the GOP nominates Trump (or DeSantis) there will be enough Republicans who will support Biden or Harris or Newsom or Buttigieg for the Democrats to claim to be unifiers, even as they demonize and turn up the heat on the Super Duper Ultra Maga.

  13. }}} And here’s a nicely Orwellian and ironic touch:

Biden’s speech Thursday will take place outside Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was debated and approved and, later, the U.S. Constitution was written.

Oh, Neo, pish-tush, it’s far, far, far more Orwellian than that…. There’s been cameras all over that place for decades, now, including the bell tower where the bell used to be, recording every movement and action of visitors.

  14. If he wants to do an act of uniting, how about pardoning this guy– Joshua Pruitt, 40, was sentenced to nearly more than 4 years in prison for “encountering” Chuck Schumer as he was being escorted out of the Senate building by armed guards and showing a casual affinity for the Proud Boys.
The completely unarmed man walked into the Capitol, walked around, saw Schumer at a distance, and walked out. He made no threatening moves toward Schumer. But apparently it was enough to get him nearly 5 years in stir.

    https://hotair.com/jazz-shaw/2022/08/30/latest-j6-rioter-gets-nearly-five-years-for-encountering-n493194

  15. “Semi-fascist” is polling as well as “Deplorable” did.
The D braintrust has realized that it’s time pay attention to the part of America between Tenth Avenue and I-5, so they have written a homily for President von Hindenburg to read to das Volk.

  16. Don’t forget. He will once again be addressing the need to protect “our democracy”, which I suspect is not the same thing as “democracy”. Or democracy for anyone who is not on his team.

  17. Just too ironic. The man with no soul will preach a sermon on the collective soul of the nation.

I can hear the chorus from his media shills; “Amen! Preach it brother. Speak the truth. Hallelujah!” etc. They will poll the two or three people who will admit to listening; and declare it one of the greatest speeches of all time. But, in this instance G-O-A-T takes on a different inflection from that of contemporary slang.

Meanwhile, over at the J.Edgar Hoover Building it appears that some of the rats are looking for an exit from a ship that is taking on water. The list to port has become problematic.

  18. This is ironic, as Biden sold his soul to Satan sometime around 1970, in exchange for political and corruption success.

  19. So disappointing when he somehow reads all the way though without major f-ups.I much prefer the short vids of him fumbling about and wandering off.

Rumor has it he will answer any and all media questions, like his predecessor did almost daily?

  20. Heard on the radio a few minutes ago there is some proposed change to Title 9 that moves it from protecting women’s sports to now, OFFICIALLY mandating “ transgenders” be allowed in female sports. Apparently the deadline for comments is coming up early September.

  21. Do not be surprised if this is one of the things that Biden talks about under the guise of “ protecting LGBT rights from those extreme Republicans”.

  22. M. Smith @ 2:42PM:
“This week some Pennsylvania Republicans endorsed the Democratic candidate for governor and he applauded their commitment to “bipartisanship.” It’s a farce.”

But Josh is going to protect us from the “relentless and unprecedented attacks on voting rights, workers’ rights and the right to choose”, don’tcha know. Yes, you see, protecting our democracy (spit) means no voter id (because every vote that can be harvested in the middle of the night by hook or by crook doesn’t diminish or lessen the value of votes cast by citizens, no not in the least), it means the teacher’s union must be protected at all costs (because parent’s shouldn’t have a say, by g-d, that’s for the wise and all-knowing ) and right-to-work laws are just un-democratic, and abortion on demand even at the time of birth is a right of every Pennsylvanian, some rights trump other rights in a just democracy, you see? And if you disagree, well, damn, that’s just semi-facist, and mean-spirited, and by g-d we’re not gonna tolerate any dissenting voices in our DEMOCRACY. Geez, what kind of democracy do you take us for?

  23. Not content with appropriating funds for a school loan bailout without Congressional approval; Biden now moves to state his idea for an established religion in the United States.

  24. Just too ironic. The man with no soul will preach a sermon on the collective soul of the nation. — Oldflyer

Chutzpah. Sorry Neo, I know you don’t like it. But isn’t it the perfect word for this?

It certainly is ironic too, but it goes far beyond that. Oldflyer is spot on with his second sentence above. I would call Biden a “soulless dirtbag.”

    chutz·pah
    NOUN
    informal
    extreme self-confidence or audacity:

    Yes, audacity.

  25. “One of many many things that puzzles me is how anyone could have thought during the 2020 campaign that Joe Biden was a unifier.” neo

The MSM declared it to be so, villified any dissenting voice and liberal sheep accepted it because they wanted it to be true.

“Biden’s speech Thursday will take place outside Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was debated and approved and, later, the U.S. Constitution was written.”

An insult to any American who honors those men’s legacy, while simultaneously dancing in smug arrogance upon its grave.

  26. Joey Plugs is a disciple of the Jussie Smolett “Church of Politcal Demagoguery” & a race baiter par excellance. As long as he’s in Philly–a “Sanctuary City” btw–why doesn’t he give his speech from McPherson Square Library in the heart of Zombieland? Now THAT I would watch, otherwise, meh.

  27. @Nonapod “I expect this to be continued bashing and demonization of Trump voters using a variety of workshopped, nonsensical derogatory neologisms such as “semi-fascist” and “ultra-maga”.

Agree. As Karina Jean-Pierre said the other day, “…the ‘extreme MAGA agenda’ is a ‘threat to the rule of law.”

His “Soul of the Nation” speech will almost certainly continue to push this narrative. When you are a “threat to the rule of law,” you are beyond the pale and need to be dealt with. They are preparing the battlespace for the persecution, and then prosecution of the Conservative movement in this country. Think that’s conspiracy stuff? Think about where we find ourselves now.

  28. Yawrate,

“I like a unity ticket with DeSantis and Gabbard. Tulsi clearly knows that the deep state is the real threat to our country and isn’t afraid to say so. She is old school liberal …”

Old school liberals enabled the left to infiltrate the schools, until the graduates took over the party. I doubt she would be any different.

“You know, someone very profoundly once said many years ago that if fascism ever comes to America, it will come in the name of liberalism. And what is fascism? Fascism is private ownership, private enterprise, but total government control and regulation. Well, isn’t this the liberal philosophy?” Ronald Reagan in an interview with Mike Wallace

  29. He was a soviet tool from way back so its not surprising

The homunculus fetterman who should be biting off chickens is all for freeing more criminals

  30. Stalin invented the tactic of calling anyone who opposed him a fascist. Does that mean that Biden is a semi-Stalinist?

  31. gothamite: ‘He will once again be addressing the need to protect “our democracy”, which I suspect is not the same thing as “democracy”’

It’s been clear some time that when Democrats say “our democracy” they mean “the system of government in which we rule.” The way the term was suddenly used by pretty much all Democrats indicated that it was some kind of official talking point.

Neo, if my memory is correct, you summed up Biden perfectly a while back: “not very smart, not very honest, not very nice.”

  32. Cornhead wonders, “How does he sleep at night?”

    SCOTTtheBADGER answers,

“Biden sold his soul to Satan sometime around 1970”

When Satan buys a soul, the first payment is the conscience.

  33. “When you are a “threat to the rule of law,” you are beyond the pale and need to be dealt with. They are preparing the battlespace for the persecution, and then prosecution of the Conservative movement in this country.” Erasmus

What better way to provoke a nationwide “insurrection”, requiring a Presidential declaration of nationwide Martial Law for the duration of the “national emergency”? No doubt runaway inflation, skyrocketing unemployment and food shortages will all assist in fomenting “domestic terrorism”…

  34. Biden was spouting off about gun control in Wilkes-Barre today: “Joe Biden said Tuesday while in Pennsylvania that ‘brave right wing Americans’ who claim the Second Amendment is meant to fight back against a tyrannical government would be obliterated by the military. Biden was speaking in Wilkes-Barre while promoting gun control and bolstering police forces across the nation. Biden pushed for a federal ban on so-called ‘assault weapons’ and took aim at Republicans during his speech, invoking the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.”

    https://dailycaller.com/2022/08/30/joe-biden-military-obliterate-second-amendment/

  35. PA+Cat:

In the typical Brandon fashion he said you can’t buy automatic weapons (aka machine guns) or cannons. Except that you legally can buy and operate both, through the BATF process. They are very expensive to obtain.

    Typical of senile-fascist Brandon.

Will Brandon go full Swallwell and pledge to nuke those other Americans, for democracy, and the rule of law?

  36. Paul: nothing semi about his Stalinism. He is and always was an authoritarian. “There ought to be a law” has been the motto. Has he ever worked to increase freedom?

However, we should probably thank him for coming hard for the gun control since it was beginning to look like the Republicans were loosing momentum going into the mid terms.

His also quite the “uniter” threating his fellow Americans with F-15s again. At least he didn’t go full Eric Swalwell and talk about nuking us. You should never go full Swalwell.

  37. In front of Independence Hall? That’s some real late-empire stuff, right there. The message is going to be really weak and difficult to support if they’re using the legacy of historical icons as a backdrop to prop them up.

I guess the legacy corporate press will be doing the front-run, leading up to it like Superbowl Sunday.

  38. @PA+Cat
“OT: Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who brought down the Iron Curtain,….”

I think it is more accurate to say the Mikhail Gorbachev closed up shop and turned out the lights on the USSR.

Reagan, Thatcher and John Paul II brought it down.

  39. @ Art Deco in re Swalwell > “More reichstag fire messaging.”

Here are the arsonists who will start the fire.

    https://twitchy.com/brettt-3136/2022/08/30/leaked-patriot-front-video-shows-the-members-training-for-war/

I don’t think I have to remind anyone here of this Severely Conservative paramilitary group that no one at all believes is a genuine Right-Wing militia.
There are a LOT of them in the linked video, the huge number of watchers holding large US flags (and yet, apparently no one connected to the real right-wing “extremist” community knows who any of them are), but I’ve seen better cosplay war-fighting at some Highland Games free-for-alls, and I’m sure any chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism could wipe them out.

We’ve yet to see them doing anything except piling out of U-Hauls and marching.

It’s cute how everyone coordinates their outfits at the FBI company picnic

Even cuter that there are no older or heavier participants thannn, sayyyyy, a FBI recruitment class?

all the shin/knee guards match perfectly (and are impeccably clean) This is a well financed op, not a bunch of guys buying their own stuff and even painting it to match colors (which would still show different models and imprecise paint jobs) the FBI can’t even fake well

    And they’re always in masks.

It’s gonna be so cool to see the Patriot Front Feds take on the Antifa Feds at the picnic football game

Patriot Front is just an idea man…..

Only the left could believe whatever that is is training for war…

In a repeat of the J6 scenario, these absolutely authentic ultra MAGA warriors will storm some selected event or location (carefully left undefended), and never be identified or arrested for anything, but the Democrats who are screaming their heads off about the entire Republican Party being terrorists will have the excuse they’ve wanted for years to finally take off their now-threadbare gloves and graciously deign to take complete control of the country — for our own good.

I think I see Ray Epps

    https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2022/aug/21/all-republicans-are-now-terrorists/

Last week, Financial Times Associate Editor Edward Luce tweeted that Republicans are the most “dangerous” political force in the world, bar none. “I’ve covered extremism and violent ideologies around the world,” he said, and “I have never come across a political force more nihilistic, dangerous & contemptible than today’s Republicans. Nothing close.” Former CIA Director Michael Hayden chimed in immediately and said, “I agree.”

This past Tuesday, Democrat adviser Kurt Bardella called all Republicans a “domestic terrorist cell.” MSNBC’s Tiffany Cross agreed and said there should be no distinction between Republicans and “right-wing extremists.” At the same time, Peter Wehner, a contributing writer for The Atlantic, likened the Republican Party to a “dagger pointed at the throat of American democracy.” All this while the FBI Director Christopher Wray added that any American flying the Gadsden — “Don’t Tread On Me” — flag is suspect of violent extremism.

Does anyone except me hear the ghost of George Orwell laughing right now?

Does it concern you that a group of Democrats holding power is now defining all Republicans as being “right-wing extremists” and a “threat to American democracy?”

And by the way, what is a right-wing extremist? Is it someone who advocates for pro-life legislation? Is it someone who believes in traditional standards of sexual morality? Are you a right-winger if you believe in lower taxes? Are you an extremist if you dare to call for open debate on environmental policy? Are you a threat to American democracy if you think enforcing America’s borders will actually be good for America? Are you one of those “nihilistic, dangerous & contemptible” people “holding a dagger to America’s throat” if you believe in school choice and the self-evident reality of parental rights?

Isn’t it a bit convenient that Big Brother has decided that all Americans with a “Republican” bumper sticker on their car versus those who obediently parrot the beltway propaganda of George Soros are a security risk?

Do you feel more secure knowing that some bureaucrat or politician at the highest levels of political power can unabashedly pigeonhole any person holding a conservative worldview as a compromise to national security? Do you feel safe knowing that this tactical use of rhetorical sleight of hand is actually accompanied by a straight face — or perhaps a sly grin?

This betrayal of classical liberalism is simply incredible. And I mean this in the technical sense of the word. These worn-out political attacks lack any credibility. Our nation’s political class and their obedient media lapdogs make no sense. They disregard any elementary understanding of freshman-level logic. Their rhetoric is foolish. And when caught on the horns of their duplicitous dilemma, their only reaction is to shoot the messenger and ignore the message.

  40. @ miguel > Travis’s Tweet “Tonight @JohnFetterman said he’s not healthy enough to debate @DrOz because of his stroke. I hope Fetterman gets well, but how in the world can he serve six years in the senate if he can’t even attend a debate? He should withdraw from the race for health reasons.”

Skipping debates seems to be the new Democrat Party line.

    https://redstate.com/bonchie/2022/08/20/kari-lake-slams-her-democrat-opponent-for-cowardly-debate-move-n615140

Kari Lake is facing off against the mother of all Karens in Democrat Katie Hobbs in Arizona. The two gubernatorial opponents have been going at each other, with Hobbs trotting out the typical charge that Lake is too radical. That’s how you know a Democrat has nothing to actually run on, and Hobbs really has nothing to run on.

Perhaps that’s why Hobbs is trying to duck out on having to debate? According to Arizona’s Family, which represents two local news stations, the Democrat thinks she can avoid having to defend her positions by claiming that Lake will cause a “circus.”

It is not Hobbs’ job to decide what is a “circus” or not regarding any debate between her and Lake. Rather, it is up to the voters to decide what is acceptable based on having that open debate. I told you that she was the ultimate Karen, and here, she’s offering the ultimate Karen excuse, refusing to show up for a debate unless she can speak to the manager.

Lake wins either way at this point. If Hobbs belatedly decides to debate, she will likely get eviscerated on stage. If she doesn’t, then she looks like a pathetic candidate who can’t defend her own policies in front of the voters, which happens to be the reality of the situation.

  41. More on the Fetterman non-debate:
    https://redstate.com/bonchie/2022/08/30/fetterman-officially-chickens-out-n620399

John Fetterman, the Democrat running for Senate in Pennsylvania, is not well. That much has been made clear by his recent public appearances. His speaking has been concerning, to say the least, and the lingering effects of his massive stroke, brought on by ignoring his doctor for half a decade, have shown him to be completely unfit to run for the office he’s seeking.

More recently, Mehmet Oz, the Republican in the race, has made Fettermans’ health an issue, specifically regarding the coming non-partisan debate scheduled in Pittsburgh. Would the Democrat, who can’t currently form coherent sentences and has been running a meme campaign, show up?

We have an answer: Fetterman has officially chickened out.

Laughably, Fetterman’s excuse for not showing up is that Oz made fun of him. No, I’m not kidding. The clown who has spent his entire campaign making New Jersey jokes is now really upset that his opponent finally hit back. It’s pathetic.

Apparently, Fetterman can dish it out but he can’t take it, which is predictable. He wants to be able to hit Oz with a variety of unfair attacks, but he doesn’t want anyone to question his health, which is actually a legitimate issue. Someone who is so sick that they can’t debate should not be running for the US Senate, and it is very much an open question whether Fetterman will ever even fully recover. Certainly, his long-term prognosis is cloudy at best given how bad his stroke was.

What this comes down to is that Fetterman is stalling. He and his handlers know he’s incapable of standing on a stage for two hours and debating the issues.

He may feel that he’s got nothing to lose by using the basement strategy all the way until November. I think that’s a miscalculation, though. Oz has been making headway in the polls and with over two months left until election day, there’s a lot of time for Fetterman to be further exposed. As it becomes clearer that he is ducking the debates because he can’t physically do them, that will resonate with some segment of voters.

In this case, it seems like Oz is NOT the man hiding behind a curtain!

However, the basement strategy worked for Joe Biden, so maybe Fetterman is counting on some of the Democrats’ elixir of election fortification to aid him as well.

  42. Doc Zero had a good run of Twitter essays on the subject of authoritarianism, socialism, totalitarianism, fascism, elites (in Sowell’s sense of the term “intellectuals”), extremism, and the connection of the New Left Democrat Party to all of those.
Peruse the “teasers” here, beginning down at August 17 through the 29th; all of them are thought-provoking and satisfyingly blunt.

    https://threadreaderapp.com/user/Doc_0

  43. I look forward to hearing, from Neo and others, what Biden’s speechwriters tell him to say. Expect it to be a clear indication of what the Dem election messaging is going to be.

Non-Trump fan but quite conservative Ben Shapiro claims the anti-Dem sentiment has already peaked, and as they push Trump, whom independents don’t like, it reduces support for Trump. Might be somewhat true – I do think more Reps talking about how bad it is now under Biden and Dems, as compared to Trump’s time, is better than talking about new evidence the election was stolen and that Trump should be installed.

The USA really doesn’t have laws to handle what to do about an election which was stolen … other than do it again, sort of.

  44. AesopFan: When Dems call Rs fascists (or semi-fascists) they are projecting. It also is their “dog whistle” call for violence against their political enemies, as your link demonstrates quite clearly. They have the advantage of being able to use asymmetrical tactics that would be called out by the press and prosecuted under the law should their political opponents use them. I know that we all know this already. I just felt the need to write it down.

  45. Biden was popular with his fellow senators and others inside the Beltway. He knew how to slap the right backs. His peers could see that he isn’t that bright and wasn’t a threat to them. It’s hard to find someone ridiculous and at the same time feel threatened by him. Biden was a loyal party man who didn’t rock the boat. “He always voted at his party’s call, and never thought of thinking for himself at all.” He went from being the fresh-faced youngster looking up to the old-timers, to an old White man full of stories about growing up in the fifties. So again, not a threat. And what Washington DC thought about Biden could be packaged for the public by the DC media.

Trump, on the other hand, was seen as a divider because of his comments and tweets. I didn’t think so. He was entertaining. He reminded me of those old Westerns where one gunslinger says to another, “Say that with a smile.” I got the feeling that Trump didn’t hate the New York Times or CNN. He certainly didn’t want to suppress them. He enjoyed engaging with them. Trump didn’t understand the political world enough to go to war against his opponents, or he just didn’t want to. But if you are the one being made fun of, you view things differently, and the media and half the country did think of Trump as a divider. Biden had a lot in common with Trump, boastfulness for one thing, but he was made out to be the anti-Trump and assigned the role of unifier and healer. He ran on being the Trumpslayer who would return things to “normal,” and that was all that mattered to many of his voters.

Politicians are creatures of circumstance, and adapt to what’s possible. The people around Biden discovered that control of the Congress meant that Democrats could do everything they’d wanted to do for years. If Democrats weren’t running Congress, Biden might be saying the same things as he is now, but he wouldn’t be able to put his team’s plans into effect and wouldn’t be as harmful to the country. If Team Biden didn’t get its own way on things, Joe might be more capable of posing as a unifier, but it’s hard for him to do so now, since he is saddled with the responsibility for the results of his government’s actions, and can’t simply play the Trumpslayer.
