Another open-thread comment about something I read.
For many years, I’ve said that black culture is badly broken, that it’s infecting white culture, and that it could ruin the country. In response, I’ve been told that my argument is racist. Behind my back, I’m sure that people have called me a racist.
The foremost cause of broken black culture is absentee fathers, men who are reckless cowards. Yesterday, at “Quillette,” John Washington published an article entitled “AWOL Black Fathers” (https://quillette.com/2022/03/21/awol-black-fathers/).
Washington’s article isn’t an academic essay, even though it includes graphs, data, and references to Patrick Moynihan. Instead, it’s a raw personal story. Highly recommended.
Matt Walsh at the Daily Wire has been openly fighting the gender wars and has taken a lot of heat for it. Some of you may have seen clips of his appearance debating on the Dr. Phil show. He even established residency in Loudon County so he could speak at a schoolboard meeting.
Well, apparently Harry’s razors pulled their advertising from the Daily Wire because of Walsh’s opinions.
This, https://www.ihateharrys.com/
is how every conservative outlet should react when corporations act like Harry’s.
It’s a very entertaining video. I highly recommend checking it out.
Look like Neo’s site has been infiltrated with one of those “money at home” schemes. Filter time.
Cornflour,
Another factor is so many whites condescend by attributing urban, gang behavior to “black culture” and, therefore not open to judgement.
I grew up in an urban environment, my own father was in a gang (he grew out of it and was a great dad who stuck around), but I was fortunate to have teachers who demanded respect and held me and my classmates to high standards of English vocabulary, grammar and speech.
Whites who attribute crude language, poor grammar and speech and inappropriate behavior to “black (“urban,” “ghetto”) culture” denigrate the very race of people they purport to revere.
Ed said, “Is this bird old enough to be Vice President? It might be an improvement.”
Unlike parrots, cockatoos can live as long as 70 years, which is plenty old enough to become VPOTUS. Here’s a cockatoo whose owner supplied subtitles to its ranting monologue:
One commenter remarked, “This bird has the accent of a 70-year-old Yorkshire woman.” So– just imagine Kamala with a Yorkshire accent.
RTF–the I Hate Harry’s video was great.
Neo–so was the parrot.
Rufus T. Firefly:
What about black critics of “black culture”? They certainly exist. Are they denigrating black people and condescending to them, or is it just white people making the same points who are at fault?
What about people such as Thomas Sowell, who believe that so-called “black culture” is actually borrowed from white redneck culture? He wrote quite a bit about that.
In other words, groups do have predominant “cultures” that are not innate and not inextricably tied to their race, DNA, or anything else other than customs often (not always) passed down in the group. I’m not sure what’s so condescending about criticizing attitudes passed down in any culture or group that might make it more difficult for that group to succeed, or be responsible for a high rate of crime, or any number of other negative outcomes. Nor does it mean that those attitudes are limited to that group.
neo,
I think I worded my comment poorly because I am completely sympatico with your comment.
I don’t think it is condescending to criticize uncivilized behavior. I think uncivilized behavior should be criticized. I’m glad my teachers criticized me when I exhibited it.
I think it is condescending when people who would judge or criticize people of their own skin tone who behave a certain way DO NOT criticize others, based on extrinsic characteristics.
Wendy Laubach is right, the Harry’s video from Daily Wire is great. Well worth a watch.
My sister bought an amazon parrot because she was told it was a great bird to teach to speak. At the last minute she also bought a parakeet. Turned out tht parakeet had a better vocabulary than the Amazon, including calling the parrot an idiot.
Many years ago my sister and I were roommates, she got 2 grey (African?) parrots. Their constant calls were of the fingernails on a chalkboard type. I still shudder in remembrance of them.
Cornflour,
“I’ve been told that my argument is racist. Behind my back, I’m sure that people have called me a racist.”
When the message is too confrontational, shooting the messenger is often the response. The greater the degree with which it challenges orthodoxy, the more certain the messenger will be defamed.
Regarding black culture, there’s a lot to that. In fact, there are two black cultures in America but it’s only the crude violent one that makes the papers.
A bit of background. I grew up in Cleveland, which is where John D Rockefeller started and grew Standard Oil. He maintained a very large estate there late into his life.
When my father was in the hospital in the early fifties, he got to talking to his room mate, an old black gentleman who was very proud that he had been Rockefeller’s chauffeur. He started in on the new blacks coming up from the South and really hated them, “they are ruining our reputation”. It was the crime and bad behavior that still exists today.
It turns out that there were two migrations of blacks from the South to the North. One came up the east coast and wound up assimilating into what I’d call WASP culture, the dominant white culture regardless of race, region, or religion. This has been going on since before the Civil War. They did their best to develop that same kind of culture despite the discrimination that they encountered. The first time I encountered a black man who was descended from several generations of these blacks, he spoke with a Boston accent. It was a shock since I’d expected someone with the usual very heavy, nearly unintelligible black speech pattern. He came from a long line of very respectable accomplished people. My father’s room mate came from that population of blacks.
The blacks we associate with all the broken homes, crime, and general bad behavior are the ones who moved up from Alabama and Mississippi, the cotton slave states where they were treated as barely human. When they got north they were pretty much restricted to the big city ghettos where there was no real law as long as they didn’t leave and commit crimes agains white people. Their isolation allowed the rotten culture of the South to continue.

Paul in Boston:
Interesting. I’d have to think about it more. I don’t expect perfection, but I’m not sure it breaks down that cleanly.
George Washington Carver was born into slavery. He made no pilgrimage to the East Coast. His life was in the heartland — Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Alabama.
Miles Davis came out of Illinois and Arkansas.
Those were just the first two blacks I thought of who didn’t seem likely to fit your theory.
@ Phillip > “I’m not entirely sure the trainer wasn’t throwing his voice there.”
I’m absolutely certain that he was.
Watch the way he smiles when the parrot is “singing.”
However, he is a very good ventriloquist, and works very carefully to match his vocalizations to what the parrot kind of looks like it’s doing.
FWIW, we recently had a visitor for a couple of days who brought along his parrot. The bird could say a couple of words (hello & that sort of thing), but really got going when imitating his owner’s dogs.
Oooof.

(It’s always interesting to see what comes at the top of a search; I omitted Amazon and Goodreads because they don’t usually have much content.)

Phillip and Aesop,
It’s not the trainer. A friend of mine had an Amazon Yellow Nape that I would occasionally bird sit for a month or two. Crackle had the identical voice. The first time I met him (?) he sidled up to me on his perch and sang me the exact same opera warm up. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
