Just in time for Biden’s OMICRON address, here’s the weekly virus update. As is usual for Tuesday morning after the catchup on Monday from the weekend, new US cases jumped to over 113k. Even with that, the 2 week running average is 51k/day and is increasing at the same rate as it has for 2 months; ie no change in the slope of the data. Right on cue this morning, the CDC announces that omicron accounts for 73% of the new cases. I MUST emphasize that this number from the CDC is based on a MODEL called “Nowcast” and is NOT actual data. I can’t find details of this model so I have no idea how accurate it is. It may just be too early to see a change in the case/day slope due to omicron…maybe next week though that data will be a bit messed up due to Christmas.
Serious cases are barely increasing and are stuck at 0.10% of active cases. Again, too early to tell the effect of omicron.
State level: NY, IL, and TX represent 42% of the new cases. For the states I track: NC still showing second delta/omicron wave at about 50% of initial wave. Deaths steady at 12/day compared to peak of 60 for delta. NH cases now at 18k/day compared to alpha of 12k/day…NH is definitely “late” in terms of the delta compared to rest of the country; deaths still rising but less than alpha. GA as of this morning showing secondary delta/omicron wave of cases of 18k/day compared to peak delta of 85k/day; deaths showing no upturn and down to 2/day. CT now at 90% of its cases/day compared to the alpha; deaths steady at 7/day. Florida showing a second delta/omicron wave as cases moved from 2k to 4k/day… press will scream “100% increase!!”, but this number must be compared to initial delta wave of 300k/day; deaths still very low. Colorado cases continue to drop but deaths holding steady at about 38/day.
Coming back to what Lee posted several days ago on the New Hampshire Covid thread “Absolutely tragic that people aren’t being treated.” I agree with GB that tragic is the wrong word for what has happened. If what is now being exposed is true, the proper word for the withholding of early treatment protocols to contain the seriousness of Covid is criminal.
There is growing evidence that the Medical Establishment purposely withheld early treatment protocols that could have saved 10’s of thousands (or more) lives in order to promote the vaccines that have now been proven to have limited effectiveness. The proper word for this behavior is criminal as in Crime of the Century magnitude. I think a lot of higher ups are starting to feel the heat and will double down in the days and weeks ahead in order to escape the responsibility for the wickedness they have done.
Just checked this AM; so far, worldwide there have been less than 20 deaths due to omicron.
speaking of the 1890’s video.
From about 1880 or so, to about 1914 (the start of WWI) Europe was experiencing unprecedented peace and economic prosperity .
Then a few hotheads – the guys running the governments in Austria-Hungary, Russia, Germany, France and the UK (how many folks are we talking about??
say, the top 25 guys ruling the roost in each of those nations, so say about 200 men in total) decided that a very brief, easily winnable war, would teach “the other guy,” what the natural order of things were.
The rest is history.
The lesson here is that regardless of the extant social /economic conditions the you-know-what can hit the fan in totally unexpected and unpredictable ways and turn the world upside down; no Hitler or Stalin or Tojo needed.
Speaking of voting for a national suicide, a la Venezuela , the good citizens of Chile just voted in as their president a die-hard communist with a long history of violent leftist agitation. If the Chileans are lucky, the military will remove him – and his pals – quickly and permanently – from the living.
Of course, this will garner international condemnation. But if this new president was a right-winger , they would be condemning him before he took the oath of office. But since he is a leftie, well, just like the demokrats here in the USA, he can do no wrong.
I await all the Hollywood folks, Jesse Jackson, AOC, the Bernie-the-Brooklyn-Bolshevik-Sanders, et. al., to now make their obligatory trek to Chile to genuflect at the feet of, and bend over for their new “social justice” warrior.
The stupidity of voters never ceases to amaze me.
What struck me from the 1890’s video is that the children were dressed like adults. Today, adults dress like children.
Today I’m completely despondent about how the progressives have completely captured the narrative on essentially everything. Covid is a good example. The Left ignores the facts and science – while claiming to be backed by science – in order to lock down the economy and schools. The damage done to children and those who couldn’t get timely medical treatment was huge. All this was done so that the Left could steal the election.
Progressives think that they are good and moral people. They think our views are abhorrent. They won’t compromise with us. It is their way or the highway. Failure to concede to the Left is divisive. See, e.g., Joe Manchin.
Here’s a recent example from my life. I dated a woman for a good long time. I got along fine with her kids. But then I broke up with her. We got back together for a brief time this year. Her youngest daughter told her mom, “I’d rather see you become a lesbian than date Cornhead.” All because of my conservative and abhorrent views. (Her mom hated Trump and got all her news from ABC, but that wasn’t the reason why I broke up with her.)
Since the Left owns the media, popular culture and schools, I don’t see how we ever win again. The Left will pull out all the stops to keep the GOP from winning the presidency again.
Agree with Xylourgos.
If Trump were still president, we’d have the generic therapeutics in use (HCQ and ivermectin), Pfizer’s Paxlovid would be available now, and Fauci would be out of a job.
Kate: Apropos of Fauci’s being out of a job (a consummation devoutly to be wished), have you seen “Fauci’s War on Science:The Smoking Gun”? It’s an analysis of Fauci and Collins’ decision (copies of their e-mails included) to punish epidemiologists who warned against the dangers of prolonged lockdowns. “What we find in these emails are highly political people who are obsessed not with science but with messaging and popular influences on the public mind. . . . It was an outright war on top scientists, people whose views on matters of public health were not different from the professional consensus only earlier in the year.”
What struck me from the 1890’s video is that the children were dressed like adults. Today, adults dress like children.
Not precisely. The adults dress in very informal clothing, much of which is appropriate only for your backyard.
Zaphod and I hijacked the Manchin thread last night with an exchange about Zen koans. I mentioned a book which had the cheats for the major koans from a century ago. (Koans are riddles one contemplates to advance in Zen — the most famous being “What is the sound of one hand clapping?”) Here’s a good article on the book:
____________________________________
Century-Old Book of Koan Answers Is Still Controversial:
Why the recently reissued The Sound of the One Hand: 281 Zen Koans With Answers may not give Zen students the answers they’re looking for
n 1916, a peevish Japanese Zen monk gave himself a pseudonym meaning “The Arch-Destroyer of the Existent Order” and published a book titled A Critique of Japanese Pseudo-Zen. The book consisted mostly of a blistering attack on Japan’s Rinzai Zen schools and the way they were conducting koan study at the time.
Koans are those odd questions asked by Zen masters that defy rational answers. The Rinzai school of Zen developed a practice of koan study in which a student sits in meditation with the koan and periodically presents his understanding of it to his teacher in a private interview. Although the standard koans have all been published, the way they are presented is supposed to remain private between student and teacher.
But Arch-Destroyer broke centuries of protocol and described how the 281 koans then in use by Rinzai Zen schools were answered. His aim in doing this was to expose the Rinzai Zen masters of his time as phonies who had forgotten the essence of Buddhism. Armed with this book, he said, any fool could be a Zen master.
Critique raised a scandal, and it sold well enough to justify a second printing in 1917. When monks began to present the cribbed answers in interviews, at least one teacher made changes to the traditional koans to confound his students.
“The Arch-Destroyer of the Existent Order”! The man had style.
the good citizens of Chile just voted in as their president a die-hard communist with a long history of violent leftist agitation. If the Chileans are lucky, the military will remove him – and his pals – quickly and permanently – from the living.
You need to dial it back.
He’s a public nuisance with the audacity to run for president when he’s 35 years old. Feckless electorates fall for that periodically (see Bilge Clinton and John Kennedy). However, his political party won just 1/4 of the seats in the lower chamber and 1/10th in the upper chamber. Starboard parties hold half the seats in the upper chamber and north of 40% of the seats in the lower, with Christian Democrats and social-liberals carrying enough to prevent the left from holding a majority. For all his bravado, he isn’t in a position to accomplish much through statutory legislation. At least on paper, the Central Bank has considerable autonomy, and that may inhibit any mischief he could do as well.
PA Cat, yes, I saw that. In my opinion, Fauci and Collins are responsible for perhaps a third of the deaths which have been recorded from/with COVID. This is similar to the “global warming” non-debate, in which the people who have the government and the funding under their control simply stifle opposing research and opinions, even from competent scientists.
Since the Left owns the media, popular culture and schools, I don’t see how we ever win again. The Left will pull out all the stops to keep the GOP from winning the presidency again.
Cornhead:
The Left does own the media, culture and schools. That is a problem. However, I say we are more than half the country and we have our power. We see through their Newspeak and Doublethink.
The Soviet Union had the power in spades over its people and the USSR is gone.
With Manchin standing athwart the BBB bill and yelling “Stop,” I think we are seeing the Left’s high water mark. They’ve pushed their current run as far they can.
Unless one believes they can dial in any electoral result they want, they are going to lose next year, then face chaos in 2024.
My main concern is that they are desperate and might do dangerously desperate things, hard to foresee. That’s a wild card.
Gotta post my disagreement with huxley and his claim about a turn, in opposition to Cornhead’s dour pesimism.
No — “I say we are more than half the country and we have our power. We see through their Newspeak and Doublethink.
“The Soviet Union had the power in spades over its people and the USSR is gone. [True enough. But in the Orwell/Huxley dystopia weepstakes which supplants the Old Classical Marxism, the reality is that brute force and clashing is quite passe. Yet, given that slavery of the mind via successful Kulturkampf leaves the idiot-subjects so much more willing to not only succumb to their abject submission but to cruelly enforce collectivist ideals and oppression against nonconformistd, is there any there any difference except rivers of blood and corpses? Minds are rotting away. Human energies utterly wasted. And actual humane progress killed.]
“With Manchin standing athwart the BBB bill and yelling ‘Stop,’ I think we are seeing the Left’s high water mark. They’ve pushed their current run as far they can.”
Dream on, dreamy buddy. With the Left indoctrination firmly ruling minds for another generation, I could get optimistic about the 2040s.
But who here argues that these institutional indoctrination camps are going away anytime? This is nutty fruitcake idealism.
Sorry, h. No sale here, from me.
TJ:
Spare me the condescension. I’m not your buddy and I go by “huxley” not h.
So how do you see the next two years playing out? If the Dems lose the House next year, their ability to pass transformational legislation is over for the rest of Biden’s term and in 2024, what hand do they have to play in the Presidential race?
As to indoctrination, it’s hardly omnipotent. The US was a far more conservative country 60 years ago. People marching against the Vietnam War were a fringe group. The Weather Underground was a violent fringe group. There was plenty of indoctrination against them. And yet…they kept plugging away.
Unless you wish to argue that history only moves to the Left, the Leftist New World Order is not a lock.
Looks to me like history moves through cycles. As I keep saying, when it comes to history, the Straight Line is not your Friend.
Very good piece by Heather MacDonald on the COVID fear factory.
IN OTHER PRESSING NEWS, the Biden vax mandate through OSHA is arguably the most onerous one. It is the vehicle through which dictator Biden attempts to make Covid vaxxing universal in the US by making businesses with less than 100 hundred employees comply with Federal dictates or face huge fines.
After a series of victories against Fed Vax overreach, a Fed Appeals Court three judge panel voted narrowly (2 to 1) to reverse the prior court’s stoppage to this heinous tyranny.
Today, through Justice Kavanaugh, SCOTUS signals possible early action on the matter by requesting Biden cronies to pony up with their arguments quickly for the High Court to review.
.
Truly, given the speed with which Omicron Variant is coming, this needs to be settled at Warp Speed.
That is, faster than January, which looks like the earliest SCOTUS acts to take it up.
And then the Four Horsemen appeared, War and Pestilence in their wake.
Coming here soon. Well, we have the Pestilence already.
In the Heather MacDonald article I posted above one of her main observations is that it has been mostly women driving the hysterical fear campaign and this pathetic, broken woman is an example.
And a quick perusal of her twitter feed makes it apparent this is not a parody just a sick, troubled person.
THE past month or so has seen a Russian, Ivan Danchanko, connected to the Hillary ’16 campaign indicted for false statements.
The length and detail of the indictment suggested a roadmap for further investigation by the Special Counsel, John Durham.
So some said. Others have been bitten too much to hazard a guess. I’d count Sundance at Conservative Treehouse as one. And Techno Fog, a federal lawyer connected to DC politics, as another in this disillusioned camp.
Will justice ever be done in the Russia/Obama/Bidengate AND three letter Deep State bureaucracy corruption expose?
The one best tracked by Lee Smith, Sara Carter and John Solomon? But virtually nobody else among the reporter-teriate?
New Years is soon upon us. Will there be actual Justice done in the hyper-corrupt declining USA?
We’re… not…yet…ready to Believe. These Truths are out there.
But…we’re not holding our breaths, either.
Cornhead, I’m with you. This has been a very depressing year.
Thursday, my wife and I will drive to California from Tucson AZ to spend Christmas with my son and his family. He refused vaccination in spite of being an insulin dependent diabetic. Eventually, he caught Covid from a coworker and told me is was like a bad cold for three days. His kids are all in school, one at U of Alabama and two in high school. His son plays varsity football and baseball, his younger daughter is a swimmer. The kids are all sensible, not “Woke.” He tells me that Newsom’s mask mandate is still ignored in Orange County. Pretty normal Christmas.
TJ
People thought the same thing about USSR, it would never end. Then there was Chernobyl. within 5 years the Eastern Bloc was gone. Watch the movie Chernobyl and you see the Biden administration in spades.
Cornhead: I share much of your sentiment, well put. However we must try to stay positive (bc not will that attitude we won’t) and keep up the good fight.
Cheer up-at least we have a sense of humor!
Enjoy the holidays.
Merry Christmas and may God Bless
Neo I love old pictures and moves, mostly to see what the backgrounds are like, dress of people is interesting but generally all same so once started that gets less to watch.
Art Deco;
Audacity or not, he was elected president.
“For all his bravado, he isn’t in a position to accomplish much through statutory legislation.”
And since when do hard core communists (or fascists) depend upon “statutory” legislation to accomplish their goals?
Recall that Hitler never received more than 38% of the vote in any national election.
Which statutory legislation was used by Chavez/Maduro to achieve their goals?
Recall that Obama, and now Joke Bidet, pass and/or neuter laws dutifully passed by Congress , by signing executive orders.
Since when does a president make laws?
Communists NEVER follow the law; the find ways around them.
That is their MO.
They are dangerous individuals and have zero regard for laws or anything that stands in their way.
Frankly, these communists need to be eliminated from the living, for if they are not, one can expect they will eliminate many thousands in their pursuit of absolute power.
(OTOH, it IS Fox News…and we all know just how much the good people of WV EXUDE wealth and white privilege…)
I’m still listening to the Monkees. Here’s a really fun one that I remember fromthe 60s – but never since. Not even when looking back after Peter died. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPHMd7vAUkw&list=RDXJJL-clqdfU&index=27
Gonna Buy Me a Dog (’cause I need a friend now)
with a ton of backtalk.
“Those who have been hospitalized by Covid have also been disproportionately obese, to a startling degree. Covid discriminates, and not just against the unvaccinated. I don’t know why our media has decided that reflecting the plain scientific reality that different people have profoundly different Covid risks should be so taboo, but it’s precisely the sort of thing that causes a loss of trust among the skeptical. ”
I keep looking for honest Liberals – so I found this fairly honest Marxist. ( Who thinks Dems are gonna lose big if they keep doing the mistakes he’s pointing out.
Like Marx, good critques – but also lousy big-gov’t solutions in many econ cases.)
We’ll be hearing more of Freddie.
We saw one of the Chernobyl movies – the heroism of “almost certain death” volunteers was dramatic. Not a totally happy ending.
JohnTyler: if it makes you happy to be unhappy, be my guest.
After a series of victories against Fed Vax overreach, a Fed Appeals Court three judge panel voted narrowly (2 to 1) to reverse the prior court’s stoppage to this heinous tyranny.
One court of intermediate appellate review cannot ‘reverse’ the decision of another with a different geographic jurisdiction.
The entire strategy of using PCR cases was pioneered in the AIDS scare.
“ One of the inevitable outcomes of this “confirmation-biased” research was the rapidly expanding definition of “AIDS.” Dr. Fauci’s battalion of scientists implemented a wide-ranging HIV testing program using indiscriminate PCR tests capable of amplifying tiny strands of long-dead genetic debris billions of times. The PCR test could not identify active HIV infection. Mullis, who invented the tests, pointed out that the PCR was capable of finding HIV signals in large segments of the population who suffered no threat from HIV and had no live HIV virus in their bodies. Researchers naturally found harmless HIV DNA detritus in people with a constellation of other diseases. All those unrelated ailments soon became incorporated beneath the umbrella definition of AIDS. Individuals with Candida or Kaposi’s sarcoma and a positive PCR test had AIDS. Those same individuals with a negative PCR would have Kaposi’s sarcoma or Candida.“. Kerry Mullis[see above], inventor of PCR and 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, called Fauci a scientific fraud back when the AIDS scare was at its height 30+ years ago.
Physicsguy, you’re doing yeoman’s work studying case counts, but they’re meaningless numbers to scare the rubes. All that matters is who dies by age group and what were the underlying conditions. Had those numbers been presented from the beginning and honestly there would be none of the nonsense that is going on now.
I’ve been reading “The real Anthony Fauci…” by Robert Kennedy, Jr. If even 10% of what he describes is true, the NIH, CDC , and all the rest are a crime against science and a conspiracy to loot the US treasury on behalf of Big Pharma.
Art Deco;
Amazing that you have psychic powers, however inaccurate they are.
How anybody can claim , as you did, that an individual just elected as president of a substantial nation, is merely a “nuisance” is simply mind boggling.
Yep, that Castro guy was sure a nuisance, as was that 3rd rate vagabound artist, Hitler, or that bus driver Maduro.
My opinion has nothing at all to do with my happiness or lack thereof.
Like the typical liberal you are, when an argument / position is stated that is found disagreeable, you/they resort to personal criticisms , however unfounded, instead of presenting a counter arguments.
In the Heather MacDonald article I posted above one of her main observations is that it has been mostly women driving the hysterical fear campaign and this pathetic, broken woman is an example.
And a quick perusal of her twitter feed makes it apparent this is not a parody just a sick, troubled person.
Damn it, Griffin! We MUST save her! Don’t you realize that if we ever get into a ‘When Worlds Collide’ scenario her name will one of the first on list for a seat on the Space Ark?! Along with such indispensable types like Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, and Bette Midler!
But, I digress…
Paul in Boston, what you say about cases is true, but as I’ve said before, I follow cases to follow what the politicians follow. Note I also keep track of deaths.
All around the world today, we wear jeans, tee shirts or sweat shirts and tennis shoes unless it is kinda hot and then we were flip flops. No matter where and it has been that way for the last two or three decades. Right or wrong it doesn’t matter, it is what it is. Africa, New Zealand, China, Korea, Oklahoma, it really doesn’t matter.
Elon Musk has given an exclusive interview to the new media of record – the Babylon Bee.
And that’s no joke!
I am not part of that “we.” I rarely wear tennis shoes unless I am exercising. If I’m out in public I typically wear a collared shirt and sport coat. I have them in different weights, so I can comfortably wear them in temperatures from about 30 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
It’s easy, comfortable and I feel good when I am out and about.
AesopFan,
Thanks for the tip on the interview!

Very good piece by Heather MacDonald on the COVID fear factory.
https://spectatorworld.com/topic/inside-omicron-variant-fear-factory-new-york-covid/
Epoch Times via Zerohedge reports here. https://www.zerohedge.com/political/supreme-court-asks-biden-admin-respond-flurry-challenges-osha-mandate

AGAIN in OTHER IMPORTANT NEWS:
THE past month or so has seen a Russian, Ivan Danchanko, connected to the Hillary ’16 campaign indicted for false statements.
The length and detail of the indictment suggested a roadmap for further investigation by the Special Counsel, John Durham.
So some said. Others have been bitten too much to hazard a guess. I’d count Sundance at Conservative Treehouse as one. And Techno Fog, a federal lawyer connected to DC politics, as another in this disillusioned camp.
Well, speaking of Christmas Miracles! Techno Fog now indicates that Durham is now investigating the Clinton campaign. https://www.zerohedge.com/political/its-official-durham-investigating-clinton-campaign
Good lord a sane article about COVID from CNBC.

Neo I love old pictures and moves, mostly to see what the backgrounds are like, dress of people is interesting but generally all same so once started that gets less to watch.
Art Deco;
That video was fabulous. Thanks much!!
…Hey, speaking of entertainment, it looks like the Bovine Ms. M. has done it again…

Meanwhile—and astonishingly, but true—it’s entirely possible that we all owe Chuck Schumer a standing ovation—maybe even a 21-gun salute (um, make that a “Bronx cheer”…Chuckie hates guns)—and utmost gratitude (while doing our most absolute best not to ROFL):
“Was This the Moment Schumer Ruined What’s Left of Biden’s Presidency?”—

H/T Instapundit (for both).
The political beliefs of young adults in the same generation as my kids is what got me so despondent. That’s the 35-25 age group.
“If the Dems lose the House next year, their ability to pass transformational legislation is over for the rest of Biden’s term…”
Um, all well and good…except for two words: Executive Order
And in other news it’s simply amazing how much Bernie “[Manchin]-is-going-to-have-a-lot-of-explaining-to-do-to-the-people-of-WV” Sanders knows about Joe Manchin’s constituents….

I’m still listening to the Monkees. Here’s a really fun one that I remember fromthe 60s – but never since. Not even when looking back after Peter died.

with a ton of backtalk.
Freddie (deBoer) also wrote about Covid-panic, and competitive virtue signaling by the inner-elite to other elites:
https://freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/covid-panic-is-a-site-of-inter-elite
Here’s another Monkees (never heard before?) – Merry Christmas in Spanish a cappella

Not sure how he’s done it, but Elon Musk has persuaded probably the most highly-principled car owners ever to inhabit this sweet earth to buy his cars…

Art Deco;

Neo doesn’t care for Cugi.
Like the typical liberal you are,
You’re not the most insightful guy on the block.
In the Heather MacDonald article I posted above one of her main observations is that it has been mostly women driving the hysterical fear campaign and this pathetic, broken woman is an example.

OldTexan,
I am not part of that “we.” I rarely wear tennis shoes unless I am exercising.
