  1. Is DWAC the stock symbol for Trump’s new social media company? It may be the newest “meme stock”.
As today’s young investors say: “Up Only” and ” To The Moon”

  2. Since this is an open thread this morning I would like to share the news about Alec Baldwin shooting and killing a women and wounding a man in New Mexico on the set of a movie he is staring in and producing. Involuntary manslaughter, consists of a killing that was unintentional, resulting from either recklessness or criminal negligence, and this is New Mexico law and the media is dancing all around this wondering how this event, not an accident in my opinion, could have occurred.

When a person picks up a gun it should always be considered loaded until the gun has been checked and cleared. The finger should never be on the trigger until the gun is pointed in a safe direction and the decision to fire the gun has been made. A gun is never pointed at another person unless the decision has been made to shoot the person. Prop firearms what look like guns are used on TV and movie sets when they point at other people or they are prepared by the prop staff to use blanks and even then there are protocols for the guns use, live ammunition is never to be present on a movie set.

The producer, Baldwin who is a strong anti-gun person did have a pistol and since they are producing a Western set in the old days the pistol, most likely would be a single action revolver, and old cowboy gun, which requires the hammer being pulled back and then the finger pulling the trigger, two different actions and since the gun fired, the hammer had been pulled back rotating the cylinder putting the live round in place to kill the woman.

I have been an NRA certified Range Officer for a number of years running competitions and what occurred yesterday in New Mexico as not an accident but it was reckless behavior on the part of Baldwin and I hope he is charged with criminal negligence since he was the person making the movie. Once more, there are protocols and rules making movies that prevent this stupid stuff. There is nothing funny about this shooting and Baldwin will have to live with his action for the rest of his life.

  3. Here is an news item on the Alec Baldwin shooting.
    https://www.breitbart.com/entertainment/2021/10/21/alec-baldwin-accidentally-shot-and-killed-female-cinematographer-injured-director-on-movie-set/

He killed the cinematographer and wounded the writer/director. Now, an actor may have a need to fire a blank at another actor, but this thing sounds like Baldwin was screwing around in between shooting scenes.

I was wondering about the whether or not it was a single action revolver like an old Colt SAA. In that case the second shot is a slower and more deliberate act than with double action or semi-auto handgun.

The film “Rust” is supposed to be set in the 1880’s, and the first double action revolver was sold in the 1899. So it was likely a single action revolver.

  4. Re: Alec Baldwin. Some apparent insider on the set alleged it was an attempt at a joke after the director called for another take. Baldwin is claimed to have said “How ’bout I just shoot the both of ya” or something to that effect, and then fired. It’s unclear if he just fired once and there was some sort of shrapnel or something that hit the other person, or twice in quick succession?

  5. Not that I know the specifics, but there are film set people hired to make sure things like this Baldwin shooting don’t happen. A huge screw-up besides Baldwin’s antics.

  6. Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau = comedy gold
Alec Baldwin apparently never heard the admonition that you do not point a gun at anyone unless your intention is to shoot that person. Very sad.

  7. Nanapod: Wow, that is a terrible if Baldwin was that stupid, joking around with a gun, killing a woman and wounding another person.

  8. There have been a fair number of Hollywood stunts that ended in someone’s death. Another instance of a prop gun causing someone’s death occurred during the 1994 filming of The Crow, which led to the accidental shooting of Brandon Lee. “As the production company had sent the firearms specialist home early, responsibility for the guns was given to a prop assistant who was not aware of the rule for checking all firearms before and after any handling. Therefore, the barrel was not checked for obstructions when it came time to load it with the blank rounds. Since the bullet from the dummy round was already trapped in the barrel, this caused the .44 Magnum bullet to be fired out of the barrel with virtually the same force as if the gun had been loaded with a live round, and it struck Lee in
    the abdomen, mortally wounding him.”

Old Texan can doubtless explain the mishandling of the prop gun better than I can.

Here is a short video of six Hollywood stunts that had fatal outcomes; Brandon Lee’s death is the fourth:

  9. Regarding the death and injury caused by gunfire on the “Rust” set, some helpful information from commenters here, but let’s be careful about bearing false witness. This is an awful tragedy. The dead cinematographer’s loved ones are suffering greatly today, as are the wounded director and all those present at the shooting, including Alec Baldwin.

    This is an awful accident*.

It is almost* certainly the result of a tragic error. There were witnesses. It may even have been captured on film. The truth will almost certainly come out. I have read speculation that Baldwin may have been joking around. I have also read speculation that Baldwin may have been directed to fire the gun (presumed to have blanks) in the direction of the Cinematographer, with the Director behind her, to help them get perspective on how a scene would look. Even if the latter is how it happened, as OldTexan wrote, that would mean some proper protocols were not followed. There was a loaded gun on a movie set and a loaded gun should not be on a movie set.

Let’s have some empathy while we wait for all facts to surface. We’ve seen how damaging a rush to judgement can be; January 6th, Covington…

*It is possible someone involved with the production intentionally loaded a live round to cause harm, and that plot has probably been done on the old, Ellery Queen or Columbo shows, but it’s almost definitely not the case here.

  10. In interview, Putin challenges western Wokism and transgenderism. And why is what Russia left behind decades ago getting revived, like “cancel culture?”

    We wonder too

“The fight against racism is a necessary and noble cause, but in the modern ‘cancel culture’, it turns into reverse discrimination, reverse racism,” Putin said. “We see with bemusement the process unfolding in countries that have grown accustomed to viewing themselves as flagships of progress.”

“It is with puzzlement that in the West today we see practices that Russia has left in the distant past.”

  11. Good points Rufus.

I was looking at the Hollywood Reporter and I didn’t learn anything new, but interestingly they listed the name of some union I didn’t recognize and cautioned film workers to call them if they are experiencing unsafe working conditions.

It had crossed my mind that a single round may have gone completely through one person into another.

  12. So my Windows 10 laptop had the symbol for installing updates on the task bar that it typically shows about once a week. After I see that icon I almost always choose either install updates and restart or install updates and shut down when it’s convenient. However, today the circular arrow symbols were blue, which seemed odd. I think they’re typically green. So I right-clicked on the icon to learn more.

Aha! It’s Windows 11! Windows is surreptitiously pushing Windows 11 as an “update.” I went to settings and disabled it, but it looks like Windows will now try to trick me into installing Windows 11 once a week.

  13. I don’t have the info handy but if you are confident enough to run regedit to edit the Windows registry there is a way to disable the surreptitious Win11 update.
If that sounds scary … don’t do it LOL.
But if you’ve played around with regedit in the past, you need to be careful but it’s not hard or even really dangerous unless you really screw things up.

  14. A local doctor in my Deep Blue county will issue Ivermectin prescriptions for free and I was able to get the Rx filled at CostCo with a copay of $0.00 so I now have a stash.
I’m not vaxxed so it feels comforting have it. Also, the wife and daughter’s stab is wearing off, so it is absolutely conceivable that they could get it … or one of us could be infected and spread to others.

Something I learned that I didn’t know before: NIH is officially neutral on Ivermectin. And has been since Jan of this year.
“there are insufficient data to recommend either for or against the use of ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19”

  15. Rufus.

I just went to my Windows 10 Update settings and it said “Something went wrong, try to open Windows Settings at another time. Of course my old system isn’t even close to what Windows 11 needs to run. AMD Athlon II X3 450 Processor 3.20 GHz with 4GB ram.

  16. JimNorCal,

I’m comfortable going into the registry and making edits. Heck, I’ve done it on machine code on IBM big iron. When I get a minute I’ll do some surfing and read up on the registry settings. If there’s a way to do it without disabling future, Windows 10 updates I’ll give it a go. I’ll probably install 11 in a month, or so, but I just don’t feel like being an early adopter/guinea pig.

  17. “Do you ‘ave a reum?”

    Old story:

Charles deGaulle and Madame deGaulle go to Buckingham Palace for a state visit. During dinner chitchat, Mme. deGaulle turns to the Queen and says, “Do you ‘ave a penis?” Shocked silence ensues. M. deGaulle puts his hand on his wife’s arm and says, “Cheri, it is pronounced HAPpiness.”

  18. Interesting article on the Chinese real estate hiccup…

How China’s Model of Dictated Economic Growth Blew Up:

The debt-fueled property & construction bubble that drove its growth turned into a huge explosive mess with an enormous amount of debt.

Chinese property developers, such as Evergrande, all together have $5.2 trillion with a T in debt, according to estimates by Nomura, cited by the Wall Street Journal.

Is that a lot of money? I like the way the article underlined the T in trillion.
