  1. Back in a discussion about Michael Anton’s essay on Machiavelli, someone linked a quote source for the Renaissance political writer.

    https://kidadl.com/articles/important-the-prince-quotes-machiavelli-on-power-and-politics

That site included a link to a collection of quotes from one of our Fan Favorites here. Name that person, from the sample below, and win a no-prize.

“I would uphold the law if for no other reason but to protect myself.”

The search function at the site is useless (it casts too wide a net), so I will give the answer in a link later on.
Not that anyone here will need help —

  2. Michael Barone:

…Democrats have been allowing players with adolescent mindsets to determine their policies, and Republicans have been embracing a leader with adolescent behavior control problems.

It’s time for the parties to grow up and pay attention to the signals and cues voters are sending them in the political marketplace.

  3. I hate Koi. They escape, or are dumped, into the wild and turn into monstrous creatures, deranging the natural ecosystem. They get up to 4 lb in size, as recently recorded, maybe more.
    Please don’t boost koi, Neo!

  4. Cicero,
I know I know I know. I get it. Koi are fat and lazy and dirty. They really are.
    And beautiful.
The good lord must have known what he was doing.
    Whatcha gonna do?

  5. Molly:
You have never really looked at a bream [Southernism] or bluegill or sunfish, all of which are part of our normal freshwater ecosystem, have you?
Koi are ugly in comparison. You just see them better from above than native fish.

  6. I’m fond of Koi… They do look wonderful from above as stated above. Not smart to have introduced species running wild though.

Come to think of it, Turtles look better from above, too. There’s something rather touching about being on a dam wall or bridge and looking down to see them paddling along with their little flippers flapping away.

Was going to say not very edible, but last year while I was paying an afternoon visit to the cute little turtles in the park down the hill saw one chomping on half a Koi — shades of Baby Yoda in the Mandalorian.

  7. Can Do! The bbc said something? Don’t care. How’s your social credit score toady in Han land? Where all will soon be grand and glorious under Winnie the Poo.

  8. With the proliferation, even explosion, of “non-binary” creatures, “men with wombs” (who, it goes without saying, menstruate) and “women with penises”, etc., the current generation may well believe that it is “sui generis”—truly revolutionary above and beyond all other.

Not sure this is the case at all, however.

In the spirit of people finding “true meaning in their lives” via the signal method of attaching romantically with avians, we present a 17th-Century Englishman (whom else?) who seems to have found true love with a fish (though orthography being what it was in that rich, creative—and turbulent—period, it should be said that not all scholars are in agreement on this particular point):

  9. Plug for The Mandalorian on GloboHomo Apple TV / Disney:

It’s 1960s Clint Eastwood’s Rawhide TV Series set in the Star Wars Universe.

Hasn’t managed to offend me at all despite it having a go-grrl implausibly ass-kicking supporting character. And I’m easily offended.
