Neo – do you stake your Peonies? If so, with what? Ours tend to flop over once in bloom.
I use a round circular enclosure much like a tomato basket. You have to put it in as the stalks get about 6″ high and watch to be sur none go outside the circle. Then the flowers kind of falls in a round shape. Looks very nice.
A very interesting review of Sharansky’s new book, ” Never Alone: Prison, Politics and My People,” can be found at this link:
That Kremlinology analogy has occurred to me too, that what’s really going on in the US government or the Democratic leadership is so opaque — as in the old USSR — we need experts to analyze the “dogfight under a blanket.”
Today Greece celebrates 200 years liberty from Ottoman rule. Happy Birthday Greece! Xronia Pola!
I don’t have peonies right now, but when I did I used the circular thingee that I Am Spartacus describes above.
I took that photo in a public garden. But it’s of a tree peony, which is a bushlike kind that doesn’t need any support. Tree peonies are absolutely gorgeous, but a bit harder to grow than regular ones. I tried but was unsuccessful in growing tree peonies.
The Tree Peony was puny and passed?
om:
I think I tried at least twice. Neither bloomed and both died.
Thanks for the flowers. I was talking with a neighbor this afternoon and noticed that one of his trees is starting to bud. Two weeks ago we had 3 ft of snow. I am looking forward to spring. Lots to do, time to do them. Retirement is great.
JohnTyler, I read the review. Sharansky is a great man but apparently even he fell for the Charlottesville hoax, even now: “Benjamin Netanyahu should have immediately condemned Trump’s moral dithering in the face of Charlottesville’s neo-Nazis.” So very disheartening. Otherwise well worth the read.
Also, hooray Greece!
@EvaMarie:
Sharanksy *is* a great man and an inspiration.
Regardless, in the case of Charlottesville he has zero incentive to seek out or to trumpet out the truth and every incentive to go with the flow.
Albuquerque has been discovered by those fleeing big blue cities. There are now bidding wars and fast sales. Homes below $200K may be a thing of the past.
Zillow tells me my house is now worth 10% over what I paid last August. I confess to no wisdom greater than I had to get out of that apartment complex.
Xylourgos, Zito Ellas! 🙂 At church this morning, there was a special Doxology appended to the Divine Liturgy for the occasion.
huxley,
I did some business in Albuquerque about ten years ago and enjoyed it. Do you think most of the influx is coming west, from California?
I’m sure you have all seen the reporter asking Ted Cruz to wear a mask. (Of course, no reporter has asked Jen Psaki to wear a mask…)
I really like Cruz’ reply, “You’re welcome to step away if you’d like.” We should all start using that a lot more when confronted by someone who is demanding we accept their skewed version of reality. It’s a polite statement. Not aggressive nor rude, but assertive.

Rufus T. Firefly:
That would be my bet. One data point is a cafe friend who told me her daughter and son-in-law were moving from Los Angeles.
I just checked U-Haul and they would charge $2544 for the rental of their smallest truck from San Franisco to Abq this weekend. (I had heard a rumor that CA U-Haul stores no longer rent for any destination outside CA.)
huxley,
Had a similar experience moving one of my kids from the Midwest to Florida last year. If we were moving the other direction U Haul would have probably paid me to get some of their inventory out of Florida!
Jessica Walter RIP If you want to see her in a well crafted mystery that will take you straight back to the 70s, here’s the YouTube link: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qD07RxAq7NI&t=1526s
Leslie Nielsen, Ed Asner, Nita Talbot, JoAnn Pflug, Jim Hutton, Lloyd Bochner, and more. It’s a treat. And of course Jessica Walter is terrific.
Jessica Walter was great in, “Arrested Development.”
Neo, I realize you might not see this comment since it’s a fairly old thread… but I’ll give it a shot. Have you heard of Itoh peonies? They’re the result of a cross between herbaceous peonies and tree peonies, with the best features of both. They’re easier to grow than tree peonies and don’t need staking like regular peonies. The stems are sturdier so there’s no flopping. Other advantages are the extended bloom period (due to side buds) and attractive foliage that looks good all the way up to late fall. Gorgeous flowers too.

This is a very sad and unfortunately probably true article about today’s United States.

Sorry to pair this up with that lovely photo.
