Some selections from the impeachment trial – plus, now we’ll have witnesses
[UPDATE 1:26 PM:
Well, that was quick. I’d no sooner published this post than it was announced that the Democrats have done an Emily Litella and said “never mind.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Saturday that a deal has been reached to skip witnesses in the impeachment trial of former President Trump, not long after a vote to call witnesses threw the Senate into chaos.
What follows is the original post I wrote.]
We’ve had double standards and hypocrisy from the Democrats for a long time, and these videos illustrate the Trump lawyers’ exposure of that fact. Democrats in Congress won’t be shamed by this, however. I think they have become incapable of shame.
Now the Democrats have decided to call witnesses even though they originally agreed not to do so. Perhaps they felt a bit damaged by yesterday’s presentation by the Trump lawyers. The five Republicans who voted with the Democrats to do so included Lindsey Graham, who had this reason for agreeing:
But the reason he went along with it was because once it became clear that they had the votes to do it, he joined because he said that if they do that, he’s going to call the FBI agents who will testify it was all preplanned and every other witness that will prove the defense. He also said he was going to make it take a very long time, if they wanted to play that game and it would most definitely interfere with anything else on the agenda that the Democrats or Biden wanted to do….
Graham noted how it was strange that Democrats always pull these moves right before a vote when they know they’re about to lose. Democrats had previously agreed to no witnesses.
If the Democrats want to waste more of their own time for substantive legislation, and wish to open up their sham trial to more witnesses brought by the GOP side, it’s just fine with Graham.
Witnesses have been canceled. The statement of Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) will be read into the record and the Senate will move on to closing arguments.
Indigo Red:
Thanks. I just updated the post.
Drat! I had hoped they would call witnesses. Such a humiliating circus that would have been. And fun to watch.
That they were humiliated by the defense yesterday was not enough. Some of the dopes in the Senate wanted to call witnesses. Yikes, they seem to have no ability to understand what happened to them and what was coming if they called witnesses. Lindsay Graham said on Hannity that, if they called witnesses, he had a list of one hundred people he wanted to hear from. At least six months would have been required for such an exercise. It may well have been Graham’s vote and comments that woke the dopes up. Too bad, I have a good supply of popcorn laid in.
Reports say that Sen McConnell has caved and publicly stated he will vote to clear Trump of charges.
And that’s all she wrote….

On Saturday, the U.S. Senate voted to acquit former President Donald Trump of high crimes and misdemeanors, specifically of “incitement of insurrection.”
The vote came along partisan lines, 57 to 43, with seven Republicans joining the 50 Democrats in voting to convict Trump. Sens. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) voted with the Democrats to convict Trump.

So I guess all those National Guardspersons can go home now.
As usual… Nice work.
So now the Trump trials will be shipped from the Pros on the Hill down to the farm teams – Georgia, Southern District of New York, etc etc. to continue the Process as Punishment phase. McConnell has opened up the possibility of endorsing continued prosecution in the civil court arenas, so the fun is just starting – as is the re-election campaign.
Zaphod – “So I guess all those National Guardspersons can go home now.”
No they were scheduled until mid-March and now I read that they are staying for the balance of the year. The Biden Administration is setting up a Green Zone. Cowering behind barb wire and metal detectors they are scared of the people that elected them…supposedly. Maybe all the parents who can’t send their kids to in-person schooling will rally next.
When the TDS dies down, the clown show that is the Biden administration seeps into the publics mind, the cable news lay-offs bite deep and hard, the astroturf NGO’s lose their funding and the court challenges wind their slow tedious route through the Judicial system maybe their fear is well-placed. Trouble is at some point they have to go home. What do they do then?
