The RNC: Day 4 — 24 Comments

  1. Whatever else his legacy may wind up being, Donald Trump at least loosened the stranglehold that Chamber of Commerce lobbyists, libertarian think tank drones, suburban wine moms, and “Great Game” playing limpdicks have had on the GOP for over a generation. This convention demonstrates that. Can you even imagine any of the other 2016 GOP options putting on something like it?

    Mike

  2. The sound stopped on Fox for c. 15 seconds, during (if memory serves) Giuliani’s speech.
    Some heads should roll somewhere.

  3. I’m watching the fireworks display that followed Trump’s speech, and thinking: How lovely it is to see celebratory explosions of color and light– what a contrast to the seemingly endless videos of riot-fueled arson, looting, and general mayhem.

  4. My wife and I, we watched Trump this evening, he was good and he kind of knocked it out of the ballpark for us.

  5. Every day of the convention has been glorious. Trump was a bit too long, but good that he refreshed in our minds all of his accomplishments. The other speakers were quite good; loved hearing Giuliani. Reminded me of why I initially supported him in 2008; I still wish he had been Trump’s first AG-how much less misery who we have suffered had that happened? Anyway, what little I saw of the dem convention-all after the fact-was not glorious.

So, someone explain to me why readership at the Dem convention was so much higher than at the GOP convention? Is it because conservatives are still more willing to listen, hear and understand the other side, and so watch their convention? While dems are not? I can’t can’t can’t believe it is because of greater enthusiasm on the dem side….???

  6. I really like the new format and I hope this is the start of a new way of doing conventions. All of the stories were heart-tugging, inspiring, and real. The RNC was able to get so much more into the time frame since there were no stops for clapping, time wasted with changing of speakers. It reflects the faster paced world that we live in today.

I liked that they had daily themes but still repeated stuff. Since we are in that faster paced world, it does take some people longer to digest the information. I liked that the children were all included, except for Barron, but he is still a kid, though a very tall kid.

The fireworks at the end were great – there were even words – Trump 2020 – and stars, and one sequence had the Trump gold theme. But, then there were the surprise of the opera singer! I will admit that I do not know the name of the first song, but it was familiar. The rest of the songs were great.

But, the ending was also a snub at the lockdown that we have been dealing with. Large group (probably temp tested), few masks, cheering, singing. All things we have been told were not good for our health. I bet the MSM will be trying to find out if anyone comes down with C19, though they are not concerned with the protesters outside of the WH.

  7. I may be wrong, but I heard that everyone who is going to be close to the President is tested at the time, for the virus, not just temperature-tested.

It makes sense, especially for a big event.

  8. The Dems gave us an infomercial. The Rs had a show, with a firework finale and an opera singer recessional.

CNN is already dismissing the “bump” that Trump is going to get from this convention. They’ve got to pretend that it means nothing that Biden didn’t get one. They’re trying to convince the potential Trump electorate that Biden is winning and that it’s no use voting.

  9. The Mellon auditorium so frequently used (Wikipedia uses a pic of the North Atlantic Council, or NATO), is so gorgeous. Then camera view transitioning to the view of the Capitol building from the Jefferson Memorial at night. Lovely. Inspiring.

This Invites the better Angels of our nature to aspire.

  10. Ann Dorn.

Let’s see what Sulzberger and his Pulitzer-toting gutter scum have to say about Ann Dorn.

David Dorn, Chauvin, Rolfe, Rittenhouse. Defenders of the nation.

  11. Grenell spoke of moving some agencies far from DC, Interior, Labor…

It’s been advocated for years, but no one ever does it. If Trump has a 2nd term it would be wonderful to decentralize Federal agencies. A nice step in swamp draining and potential boon to the cities they move to.

Put Interior in South Dakota, Agriculture in Kansas, Education in Kenosha, HUD in Detroit…

  12. @LeClerc:Let’s see what Sulzberger and his Pulitzer-toting gutter scum have to say about Ann Dorn.

Nothing. Memory-hole. They have a narrative, and they leave stuff out that contradicts it, or slap a chyron on it that describes it as the opposite of what it is (“most peaceful protests” on arson and looting).

I used to think they didn’t deliberately publish things that they knew were wrong, until they put “Bush calls Hussein ‘imminent threat'” on a speech where President Bush said the exact opposite of that. Later I found much earlier cases that I hadn’t noticed at the time.

  13. The only thing I’ve watched was Trump’s speech. I thought it was well-written and hit all the right points. The one thing I noticed is that I thought he was a bit low energy and appeared tired. I understand; things have been tough the last few weeks and I’m sure he’s stressed, like all of us. Compared to his usual campaign rally energy level, he seemed a bit off his game.

  14. Decided to listen to Trump’s speech last night; I liked it because I agree (for the most part) with the policies he has or wishes to be implemented, (though I am getting increasingly nervous about the out-of-control spending).

This being the case, I do not pay attention to his hair, his tweets, his at times in-your-face braggadocio, his public (non-presidential?) persona, etc., though for me it really does not bother me.
His opponents, of course, place a negative light on all of this and use it to trash him.

Imagine for a moment that Obama had Trump’s personality as well as his method of communication.
Your would hear the following about Obama from the media; “how refreshing for a president to speak his mind;” “finally, a president that tells it like it is;” ” a straight shooter president, it’s about time;” etc.

Unfortunately, many voters pay ZERO attention to the policies of a president or a politician and cast their vote for the personality, irrespective of his/her policy agenda.
Because of this, it opens the door to charlatans, con men and women; accomplished grifters. And if these sorts of human refuse are liberal progressives, rest assured the media will paint them all as sincere, legitimate, competent individuals worthy of your vote.
And many voters will vote as the media suggests.
That is the power of endless propaganda.

Biden is winning and it’s no use voting. If you try and mail in your ballot in a zip code that voted trump last election, it will promptly be shredded by the post office. If, after all that, trump still happens to have slim leads on election night in battleground states that Biden needs to win the election, these deficits will be overcome with hundreds of thousands of harvested mail-in ballots that will be counted over the next two weeks until the results all flip to Biden.

  16. physicsguy: “The one thing I noticed is that I thought he was a bit low energy and appeared tired”

I agree, though he did pick up the energy level towards the end (it was a LONG speech, IMO). Some people speculate that he purposely held back in order to appear presidential and counter the other side’s talking points. I dunno, maybe he was just tired. Blogger Don Surber made a comment to the effect “Trump needs to make a successful speech, if he loses this election, he will rot in jail–No pressure!”

I hope someone on the Repub side steps up and provides a media vehicle that gives our side of the story. It’s such an energy draining tide to have NYT/WaPo/XiNN/MSNBC and all the others distorting the news. We have blogs, talk radio and parts of Fox. Not enough.

We should all find ways to support RSBN, Parler, Gab, OAN, Epoch Times and other small-but-honest voices. It’s a BFD.

  17. When the fireworks display spelled out Trump 2020 I nearly wet my pants. I speculate that many Democrat shills felt the same way for different reasons. They went on too long, but in my opinion, but they always do. I was mouthing, “close it out with Trump 2020 one more time”.

I also thought Trump’s speech was overly long; in particular because Ivanka had hit many of the points very effectively. But, that was small potatoes; and I feel a bit foolish second guessing Trump on how to communicate.

Ivanka was dynamic; and so cool.

We need to hear a lot more from Grenell; and I hope he will play a key role in the next four years. Maybe if Pompeo gets enough and steps back. Smart and strong. (Tell me again, churlish ones, about how Trump is homophobic and racist. No, don’t)

The personal stories were wonderful. What a novel idea to have ordinary people telling real stories. (I say ordinary in a generic sense; these people were not ordinary as individuals.) I kept thinking, I wish my daughters and grandchildren were watching, but knew they weren’t. I hope that millions of independent and undecided voters, if there are any left, were watching.

  18. Oldflyer:
I think the length of Trump’s speech was part of the message. Imagine Biden talking for 70 minutes – even with a teleprompter…

  19. Good point, John Fisher.
It’s just that my attention span is limited.

As I said, it is a bit foolish to critique Trump as a communicator, a showman, and yes, now a political player. (I won’t say politician.)

  20. From Art Deco’s link: “Several dozen former staffers from Sen. Mitt Romney’s (R-Utah) presidential campaign, the George W. Bush administration and the campaign and Senate staff of former Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) have signed on to an effort to elect Joe Biden. For the Romney and McCain staffers, they’re working to elect the same man they tried to defeat in 2012 and 2008, respectively.”

The encomiums of Biden are manifestly false, according to what I read here and on Power Line and other non-MSM outlets.
Only two possibilities: (1) the Right-wing blogs are lying about Biden’s past; or (2) the staffers supporting Biden are delusional swamp creatures.

I’m going with Door Number 2.
