A few more thoughts on the RNC so far
I’ve said many times that I don’t like political speeches. But so far I’ve listened to a lot more of this year’s RNC than usual, and that’s a surprise to me.
One reason – probably the main reason – I’m watching it is that I’m enjoying the speeches of the non-politicians. For the most part, they’re eloquent, and their stories are actually interesting – more interesting than most speeches by politicians. They also speak with the conviction of sincerity.
Another reason I’m watching more than I expected is that I like the message. It’s a refreshing throwback to a time when both parties talked about America as a great place of opportunity and energy. Everyone knew that there was suffering here, too, as well as injustice. But we were striving and we were trying and for the most part we were actually getting it right.
Note my emphasis on the word “both” in the above paragraph. Yes, those of you who aren’t “of a certain age” like me may not realize that a message like that was the norm for many years. But it was, and no one questioned it. That’s what the word “again” is about in Trump’s campaign slogan.
Joe Biden can speak of himself as a lightbringer and curse the Republican darkness, and the MSM can echo the message, but I think that anyone actually watching the RNC with an open mind would have to see that Biden and company have the polarities reversed.
I don’t think I’ve ever in my life watched full speeches at a convention. But I have watched many of them the past two nights. I have been quite interested in hearing the many stories, and I admit to even enjoying hearing Don Jr. and Eric speak.
Neo, what you say about those of us of a certain age is certainly true. I moved from southern California to a suburb of Portland in 1983. At that time, there was a Republican governor (Vic Atiyeh) and both senators (Hatfield, Packwood) were Republican. Yes, they were neither super conservative, but still…
Having of course read and listened to some of the speeches in part after the DNC, the contrast is astounding.
Both! Yes!
I’m of a “certain age” and well remember when both parties seem to have differed only in how to make things better in an already great country.
Now, it does seem to me that the one party (and some of those in the other party) only seem to want to get power at any cost, including on the backs and lives of the rest of us. And condemn the country as a whole just so they can claim to “save” us.
Watching every night and enjoying the speeches greatly. So far, considering the great limitations of our current state of affairs, this is otherwise the best convention for me since Reagan 1980.
But when is this whole darkness and light business going to be cancelled, I mean, hey, aren’t Biden and the Dems racists or something for saying this? Seems like I’m saying a joke (which I am), but let’s see 4 years hence, that kind of terminology may be verboten. That’s how crazy things are going…
Oh please, this started in the late 1940s, became stronger in the 50s, and became in your face in the 60s. Now it is full blown with no pretense. It is now blatant. Their violence must be checked by overwhelming violence. Kill a few hundred or thousand and they will retreart to mommy’s basement to watch porn and masturbate.
My sediments exactly!
